1 is a enduro bike, shaft driven..

1 is a street bike, chain driven..

many have done touring up north with both of the bikes you mentioned.

now whether it will be reliable or not, will much depend on your maintenance done on the bike.

you could pop over to the BMW thread or fazer threads in the forum to know more.

Stock is good...Choose your weapon wisely and enjoy it...you can have all the $$$$ to mod and in the end you can't make full use of it....

Did you even bother to do a quick search? There're at least 3 threads for fazers and 1 for BMWs.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

Both bikes can tour. Both bikes are advanced.

Besides budget, it depends on what character of bike/ride you want.

The BMW is an easy going bike that can motor through north south and trunk road. But feels strained running on it's upper rev range. The BMW soaks up humps and is excellent for rough road (but not totally off road like a scrambler), but lacks a bit of road feedback.

The FZ1 is a urgent rabbit that excels at running around trunk roads. The FZ1 gives good road feedback but does not like badly paved roads.

i think a gs would be better if the path gets a little rough and bumpy.. but if your route is proper road path all the way, then the fz would be good.. want something that looks more sporty, then the fz would be good.

if this bike is going to be your daily transport as well, i dun think you want the gs.

This is a beautiful bike, just like my X BMW has great media marketing, love their videos, and pictures of their bikes off-road... But pure off-road bikes are not BMWs strong point or experience. Apparently they are experimenting in this area with the 450 cc class. I give it a "10" on looks Hopefully it is a good bike that will make it in this tough market...

I would say buying GS is like a lifestyle. Most of the ppl buying it will thought of touring, riding offroad.. but not many does that. In fact for touring capability, Fazer can do it just as well, slight off road also not an issue as it is mainly upright riding. Reliability wise, both are almost the same. Maybe BMW will have service support at other countries but I have seen and heard Fazer riding up and down NSHW and Thailand with no problem at all. Except for accident and puntures.

If money is not an issue to you, then go for GS. But seriously, Fazer is all you will need with spare money to keep.

5 to 10 grand is a reasonable amount for downpayment of either motorcycle. Though 10 grand would be advisable for the GS.

Like what others have advised go with the one you are most comfortable with. The one which will never make you regret getting it in the first place in the years to come. Both are very good and reliable motorcycles in their respective leagues.

Personally, I'd go for the Beemer but this is just me being bias :cheeky:.

Good luck in your search!

Since your younger bro bought a Fazer1, why not be his sub rider since you are also the guarantor? Then you buy GS1200? You just add him as your subrider as well. Then both of you can swap bike once in a while. You can also consider a 2nd hand GS1200 also. Most of the BMW owner take rather good care of their bike. Or even the F800GS ( I like!!) as it won't be so heavy on your wallet as well.
