Question: "Why did David choose five smooth stones before going to fight Goliath? Was David doubting God? Was it because Goliath had five brothers? Or, was David simply being prepared?"

Answer: Some presume that David took five smooth stones instead of just one because he had some doubt. However, there is no indication in the story of David and Goliath that by picking up five stones instead of one that David was doubting God. Rather, David was simply being prepared. What if the Philistines attacked him after he killed Goliath? How would he have defended himself? David was simply being prepared when he took the four additional stones. Also, he couldn’t have known that one stone would be enough to kill the giant. God had not promised that David would kill Goliath with the first stone.

David had experience in defending the sheep he guarded with his sling and stones. It would seem that the animals David had faced were far braver than the men with Goliath, because they all turned and ran away (1 Samuel 17:51). David told Goliath that he (Goliath) came with spear and sword, but his weapon was God the Father (1 Samuel 17:37). He trusted God with all his heart, believing that God would tell him exactly what to do and how. And so He did.

Others speculate that David chose five stones because Goliath had four brothers, but this is without biblical basis. There is no reason to believe that David thought if he killed Goliath that he would have to fight the giant’s brothers. Further, the Bible does not specifically say that Goliath had four brothers, although he had at least one (2 Samuel 21:19). David’s faith was in the Lord and he knew from experience God’s faithfulness. David’s faith was born out of his experience of God’s grace and mercy in his life up to that point. The Lord had delivered him out of dangerous situations in the past, proving His power and trustworthiness, and David relied on Him to deliver him from the Philistine. Whether it took one stone or five, David recognized that the power was not in his sling, but in the Lord of hosts. As David wrote later in Psalm 21:13, “Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength; we will sing and praise your might.”

Psalm 121 (Amplified Bible)

Psalm 121

1 I WILL lift up my eyes to the hills [around Jerusalem, to sacred Mount Zion and Mount Moriah]--From whence shall my help come?(A)

2My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

You know when i was a younger christian, i used to think like this....the hills represents our problems, and as we see the problems, i get help from the Lord who made heaven and earth. But the fact is the problem is right in front of my face first~!

As i re-read this passage again using the amplified version, it gave me an entirely new interpretation -- the hills are Mount Zion and Mount Moriah.

Mount Zion is where the Lord abides in the new covenant...a mountain of Grace.

Mount Moriah is where Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac giving a picture of God the Father sacrificing Jesus - the finished work of our Lord.

So, now i see that my help comes from the Lord who gives Grace and love done thru the sacrifice of Jesus.

You Are A Son And An Heir Of God

Galatians 4:6–7

6And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Perhaps these questions have been popping into your head lately: “If you are a Christian, why are you sick? If your heavenly Father is so wonderful, why do you have so many problems? Doesn’t your God help you, His child?”

And if you have been tempted to ask, “God, I am Your child. Why is this happening to me?” know that Jesus knows exactly how you feel because 2,000 years ago, the devil played the same trick on Him — “If You are the Son of God…” (Matthew 4:3) You see, the devil’s intention was to make Jesus doubt His Sonship, and the devil wants to do the same thing to you today.

He wants to destroy the Spirit of sonship in you and in the body of believers. He knows that once you really believe that you are a son of God, something happens — you begin to live life as “an heir of God through Christ”.

As a son and an heir of God, you inherit all the blessings of God which Jesus died to give you, including salvation, healing, prosperity, wholeness, favor, intimacy with God and answered prayers. And Jesus rose from the dead to make sure that what He died to give you, you get. He is alive today to enforce this rich, blood-bought inheritance in your life!

My friend, you are an heir of God through Christ. This means that you are joint heirs with Jesus. (Romans 8:17) So His inheritance is your inheritance too!

What is prosperity when you are an heir of God? All the diamonds and gold came from Him. What is provision when you are an heir of God? He owns every beast in the forest and the cattle on a thousand hills. (Psalm 50:10) What is healing when you are an heir of God? He is your Creator and the very breath of your life.

Beloved, enjoy every bit of your inheritance in Christ, not because you deserve it, but because it was paid for by Jesus’ blood!

New Creation Church collected S$21 million in fewer than 24 hours

Mon, Aug 30, 2010

my paper

THE congregation of New Creation Church has spoken again.

In fewer than 24 hours last Sunday, members of the megachurch donated an impressive $21.1 million towards its multimillion-dollar building fund over four services held at Suntec City and Golden Village Marina.

The sum breaks the church's record of over $18.8 million raised last February, and $18 million raised in April 2008.

In comparison, last year's President's Challenge raised a total of about $10 million for 37 beneficiaries.

When my paper broke the news last year that the church raised about $19 million in a day with about 21,300 people in attendance - what the church said was a "new record attendance and collection done during a worldwide recession" - it caused an uproar among netizens in online forums.

It also spawned reports in The Straits Times on the church's pay schemes for employees.

Checks last year revealed that the church paid one employee between $500,001 and $550,000 in its previous financial year, but the church did not confirm if the amount went to senior pastor Joseph Prince.

my paper understands that Mr Prince stopped taking a monthly salary around the middle of last year.

This year, a record number of over 22,000 people attended the special service last Sunday,

called Miracle Seed Sunday.

Church members donated money to help fund the construction of the Integrated Hub complex.

Located at Vista Xchange at one-north in Buona Vista, the civic and cultural complex will house a 5,000-seat auditorium when it is completed in 2012.

It is being co-developed by Rock Productions, the commercial- development arm of New Creation Church, andmall developer CapitaMalls Asia.

New Creation Church will be the auditorium's anchor tenant and hire the venue for its services

on Sundays.

With this new amount, the total sum raised so far by the church for the project stands at about $259 million, or more than half the $500 million needed.

Yesterday, Mr Prince announced how much was raised during a celebration service.

He told an estimated 20,000 churchgoers that the church did not receive "a single $1-million cheque".

The sum raised, he said, was achieved thanks to a concerted effort by the entire congregation.

During the service, Mr Prince also thanked the congregation for its contribution, adding that the amount raised was a miracle, as members were given only a week's notice before the special service.

The church's website said there was "clear accountability".

Five external auditors from Deloitte & Touche were at the site to observe the donation, and at least two were present to witness the counting of cash and recording processes at all times, it was reported on the site.

New Creation Church member Stephanie Siow, 24, explained that people gave because they had faith.
