I read several threads earlier on that talked about amount of engine oil as well as loud "tok" sounds from the clutch when shifting gears. I learnt something recently so am sharing it here. Of course I may be wrong and information is worth what you pay for it! Hah!

From BMW Website:

Oil is the life blood of your engine. As such, you want to be sure that it has enough of this vital lubricant. However, you must use care when adding oil not to overfill the motor. Too much oil can cause serious long term reliability problems.nfortunately, many conscientious riders routinely overfill their motors. In fact, most complaints of oil consumption are traced to overfilled motors.

More from BMW Motorcycle Website

Another website about oil levels saying similar thing but less detailed

Too much oil also causes more difficult shifting on the S4 wet clutch and louder clutch changing sounds. Of course, better clutch-throttle matching BEFORE shifting gears makes for much smoother changes, but too much oil still makes it is more difficult to shift.

People tend to overfill their oil - prob especially us who are kiasu - more is better! Wrong! Workshops change your oil quickly and may not go through the proper procedure of checking your oil level after they top it up. You all know that the bike must be centered or on the centre-stand to check of course... but I just found out that to check engine oil the bike must FIRST be warmed up to operating temperature then shut off and left for 15 min (some say less time, like several minutes, but basically you gotta wait and which mechanic will wait??). The reason is because first the oil has to be warmed up and second the oil has to settle after the engine is off.

So check your engine oil properly! And don't top up too much! Shops when changing your oil will put in fresh oil but prob won't warm up the bike again, shut it down, wait and recheck! Shops which are changing oil on your S4s and putting 4 bottles are overfilling. Eventually you may get excessive oil consumption and long term problems.

eh.. 4 bottles seems abit too much right?? think normal is 3 bottles... (without oil filter change)

True when changing oil and putting in new oil. But when you check oil levels between oil changes you would want to check in the way that gives you the most accurate reading. Otherwise, we may think that the level is too low or think that our bike is burning oil then add too much to the tank. For example, checking a cold bike just after starting the engine will make you think the engine oil is too low when in fact it isn't.

I always followed the amount stated on the sticker itself and make guessing to minimum.

can explain briefly why mus warm up then wait 15 mins to drain oil??

hmmz

if for me...i would let my bike wait till next early morning, push to one side of the carpark then drain the oil....almost letting all the oil settle down...hmmz...so in this case..there wun be any overtop of engine oil eventually..

Warm oil flow faster and easier so u can actually let more oil flow out.To wait 15 mins is to let the easier flowing oil flow to the oil sump before u drain out.

Waiting a few minutes after turning off the engine allows the oil to flow back down into the oil sump. However, it's important to do this when CHECKING oil level not when CHANGING the oil. Checking the oil level involves the sight window in the oil sump so to get an accurate reading the oil must be in the sump!

On the other hand, when changing the oil it just has to be warm so that it will flow. You are going to leave it for a few minutes to flow out anyway so you don't have to wait before opening the drain plug (unless the engine is really hot). Letting the engine warm up for several minutes from a cold start is sufficient for the oil to flow easily and it won't burn your hand.

when the bike is held upright, the oil level should b inbetween the high n low marking. If u say the oil cover the whole window, tat means u overtop liao.... n overtopping is no gd for ur engine.... :btw: was told the best time to check the engine oil level is to leave the bike overnight..... check it the next morning....

I DIY mine with 3 litres (with changing oil filter) and it reaches exactly the top mark (must let engine cool down, wait 5 min or more then check).

when the engine is hot, u should let it cool down first b4 draining the oil... this is to allow the oil to flow back to the oil sump... Anyway for vtec, when u change oil filter, the correct amount should b 3.2L....

For Vtec I thought u need 3.2l with filter change?
