Hey guys,

Any ideas on any good cigar bars in Ho Chi Minh? Going for a work retreat over the weekend and would love to spend Fri or Sat night smoking a couple at a nice place.

Appreciate any input, about the only seemingly decent place I can find thus far is Chu Bar in Dong Khoi.

According to my cigar fren has toured those cities, you can do a cigar at the many quaint hotels there, but you need to bring your own.

hello there, i'm having a whisky session with my friends next friday and i thought it'll be interesting to smoke as well. any idea where i can do that? nice ambience and reasonable cockage. i bought my second cigar at UE square during a whisky session at robertson and i vaugely remember that the cigar store says "bonta". that's not the con'd you guys been talking about right? i bought my third cigar from davidoff hilton. it was a petite edmundo. erm i don't know i thought it was too strong for me. thank you.

Since July 1st 2007, it has been tough to have a good smoke in Singapore.

You can still pop by Con Divan but it's better smoking outside then the designated area inside. They serve up good whsckey too.

Otherwise, another hotspot is La Casa Cubana at the regent /Tudor court, but members only since July 1st.

If not can try City Space on the 70th floor of the swiss hotel, I think their smoking "cubicle" is ready by now. hehehe

okay, thanks for the suggestion throttle but do they have reasonable corkage charges? im looking at 30+/- for corkage.

hmm some questions i haven't found answers to.

just to understand price difference at dfs and dutied. how much would a box of 10/25? monte cristo 4 costs?

and i've been reading about smokes like Famous Nicaraguan 3000 etc. how do they differ from the cuban brands and how much in cost?

sorry to trouble. thank you.

Posted

no trouble at all.

Corkage is less than $30 as far as i know.

Duty is $352 per kg so for a box of 25 Monte4 which I estimate weighs about 230grms, it would be an additional $90 including GST.

The main difference between Cubans and non Cubans is the taste+aroma.

Cost is about the same and depends on size, brand and batch. I just happen to prefer Cubans, many other people prefer non cubans too.

very similar to Durians. some like sweet , others like bitter, some like very creamy, others like not so creamy. Some like Thai, others like Malaysian...

It's all about individual taste. Taste can also change, that would be known as acquired taste....

Enjoy your nite out with the drinks and cigars, dude.

sounds really good. i can't seem to locate con divan online. do you happen to have their number? and how much would a monte 4 costs at con divan? what would you recommend for something medium? at below 25 bucks? we're actually pairing for whisky so i'm thinking of a medium smoke that doesn't dominate a cask strength whisky and for 3 of my friends. thanks man. i'll join you guys some day perhaps =)

Their website is http://www.connoisseurdivan.com/. However, it hasn't been updated for a long time. Address is The Connoisseur Divan #01-62, UE Square 207 River Valley Road Singapore 238275.

Korolev, if you find the Petit Edmundo too strong, you might want to try the Juan Lopez Selection number 1, or the one of the smaller H.Upmanns (eg. Corona, Amatista). The Hoyo de Monterrey range is also medium but I personally don't think that they go well with whiskeys.

A monte4 at condivan probably $20, not totally sure as i dont do Monte4s.

But you should depart from the norm (monte4) and go for what entity suggested.

The Petit Edmundo is barely medium and if that is already coming on strong for you, maybe you need to start with the lighter Dominican Rep cigars. Standard Macanudos and Don Diegos are easy and light. They are also enjoyable too.

yeah... conD's got a pretty decent range of whisky. tried the Laphroaig last wk at conD. the taste was unique. unlike most of the other whisky i've tried. (not like im a whisky connoiseur anyway)

anyway, who's up for a cigar tom nite? i cant log in to sbf at work now eversince the IT guys changed some software thingy. for those who can make it, pls drop me an sms instead.

korolev, u're more than welcomed to join us if u're interested...

hey nightstalker, glad that you liked your laphroaig. i'll be including a laph 10 yo cask strength to my collection soon! can't wait, you know how long it takes a nsf to save up for a bottle of single malt! i've tasted the 10yo, quarter cask, 10 yo cask strength and sherried 30 yo.

back to the point =) your invitation is very tempting unfortunately not yet. i'll pick this up real slow because whisky alone is killing me. :sian:

i'm still looking for a decent place to drink/smoke (decent corkage) e.g marriott's pool grill.

out of curiousity, how much was your dram of laphroaig? if you're keen, do check out La Maison Du Whisky, it's near conD (@ robertson, near harry's and tasting notes). they really know their whisky.

i just received an email regarding the soft launch of The Whisky Store (@ havelock rd), used to be at Cairnhill but gone for some time. decent selection too.

now to think back, my first smoke (monte 4) was from conD.

Hey guys,

Second Throttle on trying to meet next week. Too much **** going on this week.

Open to a location other than Con D although that is the closest if i am coming from work.

Vietnam sucks for cigars. At least Ho Chi Minh. Finally bought some sticks from Casa del Habano at the Park Hyatt. The shop is also run by the Pacific Cigar Co and the prices are just a little cheaper than SG, but not much, e.g. a hoyo churchill will set you back USD22 but damn what a smoke!

The Siglo cigar cases and lighters also seemed to be a little cheaper than SG so took the opportunity to get one of each as I had been on the lookout for a nice case.

Other than that, finally got my dad's old humidor. Its a beautiful black leather covered one. Had to reseason it and calibrate it but its doing well now, also reahabilitated some of my dad's old cigars: some Serie D No.4 and Monte No.2s from about 1999 or 2000. Smoked one of the Serie D No.4s the other night and it was heavenly. Looking forward to saving the others for special occasions hehe. Throttle, I think I am coming around to loving Cubans.

Look forward to seeing you guys in the near future hopefully. Ciao.
