Just want to put up something controversial:

Zino Davidoff ever famously said that no one should smoke a cigar past the halfway point (read that somewhere).

One could presume he said that to boost sales (making people smoke more cigars) or to sell cigars of the larger vitolas variety. Or he could be speaking the truth.

I haven't smoked cigars for that long, but it seems to me that for most cigars, after smoking 2/3 of it, the ash/burnt taste becomes very evident. I know some cigar smokers that really like that part, but for me, I still like it when the taste is still "free" of the ash/burnt taste.

I'm not sure if I'm one of the wierd cigar smokers that prefer it this way or there are others that think the same. What do you guys think?

Z Davidoff cared a whole lot about the etiquette of cigar smoking, rituals and all.

to me, there are basic rituals and etiquette to follow. but after a while, each individual develops his own style.

for me, I will smoke the cigar to as long as the taste is still good.

Usually to the last inch. sometimes the last half inch if the cigar is really really good.

Generally a cigar's real flavors come out after the first inch and gets to it's best at halfway. This is becos of the way the leaves are positioned during the rolling of the filler leaves. the strength also gets higher as the cigar burns shorter.

the cigar burns much hotter after the 2/3 part so smoking it may not be as pleasurable on the handling part.

at the end of the day, understand why certain things are done and develop your own styles ad techniques.

Just like golf, there are many rules to follow to perfect a swing. but after learning how to hit the ball and getting the fundamentals, its the individual self development of the swing that characterises a players prowess and style.

enjoy your smokes fellas!

I understand completely what you mean Throttle. But I've been seeing almost everyone else smoking cigars to the last inch except myself. Sometimes, I just wonder if I've an exceptionally sensitive palate or I'm just wierd. I tell new cigar smokers to throw the cigar away if they dun like the taste anymore but lots of them still smoke to the last inch.

Also, I realise that I enjoy my smokes a lot more if I either:

1. Coat my palate with something that complements the flavour of the cigar. Could be mocha/cappucino coffee, chocolate, strong red wines, some teas, black russian, white russian, Sheridan's (makes almost all cigars taste better), Bailey's..

Or

2. Cleanse my palate. Usually whiskey although I dun enjoy whiskey myself. Or warm water if nothing else is available.

Had a Serie D4 on Sat. Throttle, remember that I told you that was one of my favourite cigars? That day when I smoked it, I enjoyed only half of it before the taste turned ashy and leathery. Think I'm headed toward larger vitolas now.. Longer smokes, more expensive.. Sigh..

just got a gift from my manager, 10 sticks of balmoral cumberland.. good stuff or not huh?

o_O

I've never heard of Balmoral Cumberland. But if you like the taste (and have no ill effects afterwards), then its good. Thats how cigars should be judged.. to your individual taste.

Yes, i have bottles of sheridan's lying in my apartment.

sometimes it's good for new smokers to smoke it to the last inch so as to train their palate for complexity or range of taste/flavors.

Kukubird, I did some checking and found out that Balmoral are Dutch cigars. From my personal experience, Dutch cigars are c**p. No offence, but I had a bad experience with a Dutch cigar before. My palate could not be cleansed for the rest of the night no matter what I did to get rid of the taste after that 1 puff.

But to be honest, I've never tried Balmoral before, might turn out to be to your liking.

that chiox supreme that i passed to you was from Spain dtd Oct 2003.

I only have 5 left from a box of 25. It is certainly one solid underrated cigar.

Spain is originally where Cuba's best cigars are exported to.

Cuba was under spanish rule until the revolution fronted by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara overthrew Batista.

I'm now looking at getting Triumph Thunderbird 900 only 3 in Singapore

The ultimate classic...haha like Marlon Brando in "The Wild One"

we can go riding together to a cigar joint and then admire our bikes as we smoke

everyone else invited of course

If its an early night, I normally smoke my cigars at a Starbucks joint. I would suggest somewhere central to cater to everyone. Liat Towers Starbucks?

Open to any ideas though..
