yeah the damn prices in local shops make my jaw hit the floor. absolutely stunned...

Nightstalker> nice pictures. sturdy humidor you got there! i'm considering the high gloss, figured grain kind... kind of akin to custom pool cues; like the exotic wood, or at least the highly figured cedar, burl, walnut...

went to mortons bar today in the early evening. nice place with a small list of cigars - montes, ryj... i can't remember but putting the prices together with GST and 10% service charge, sure as hell not worth it. had a couple martinis with another ryj panatela. awful experience... the martinis were really strong... and the damn panatela wasn't even half as good as the one i smoked yesterday. uneven burn, "flowering" ash, and "Ta-da!" died out on its own mid-way. probably bad mix of drinks... should've had some port or shiraz or something/anything besides the martinis. in retrospect, even sparkling water may've been better. felt the alcohol going strong for 3 hours.

upset so went over to check out habanos and oaks. habanos is kinda overpriced, and rather limited selection. oaks had some offers... noticed the hoyo de monterrey double corona which surprisingly didn't have bands on them... hmmm, must allude to some discount then! think the partagas d series no.4 was on offer too... working out to be like 24 bucks per stick? didn't see but wonder what year it was...

hope to find and on the lookout for...> upmann conn no.1s, rey del mundo choix supreme...

A rather expensive (to me) humidor, but can get it at reasonable price at ebay.

But if you want to go cheaper, see my next post :cheeky:

BTW the two plastic tube are Dry Mistat

Now for my short term storage, an acrylic canister purchase at jb.

I use the thin cedar sheet for the side, and unroll an lousy cigar for the bottom.

nuvole> you really are something special man. i was laughing so hard when i read your various 'budget/temporary' alternative humidor options! appluad your creativity though; especially like the acrylic canister (not glass?). The set-up actually looks pretty impressive, with those delicious p2s of course. haha. by the way, how'd you manage to get your hands on the sheets of spanish cedar? Oh, where/how much is DryMistat - not available locally? i've actually seen some packet humidication with gel beads inside; something like packet silica gel.

the Reed and Barton humidor looks exquisite man. very handsome wood. the diamond crown humidifier is used in conjunction with the DryMistat?

ya man. i really admire ur creativity. im too lazy to find the cedar strip. so might as well get a proper humidor. i used to keep them i a tupperware too. damn ugly lookin. gotta hide in the cupboard. hehe....:smile:

Glass is recomended, but I wanna go cheap mah.

I buy cigar in box, an inside it will contain 1-2 cedar sheet, the ones on the picture are from P2.

I buy it over the net from u.s cost us$10.95(s$18.50), buying 1 or 2 is too expensive due to shipping.

I work offshore hence most of the time, and away from home for months.

The DryMistat keep my cigar in good rh even I don't check them often :thumb:

Its also good for traveler that carry a few stick in ziplock.

I don't recomend those super high gross type. The "exotic wood" are actually thin skin of hard rubber material, which in the long run will come off.

nuvole> thanks for the info! i'd never have thought of dismantling the sheet of cedar from the cigar box itself. the "exotic wood" is sorta like decal, varnish, veneer? anyway, good advice - i'll proceed with something plain but more emphasis on the construction then. i've got something in mind already... 1ft x 2ft, clear glass top, 4 dividers... decent?

U misunderstanding liao, they are the thin cedar sheet use as partition between the two layer of cigar, just wetthe sheet with distill water and they can be bend easily.

Those looks very nice, but to shipped them :giddy: , worst still if you use surface mail:giddy: :giddy:

Some cigars do not come with bands.

There is a term for it, which i cant remember.

Throttle should be able to clarify. I'm too lazy to look it up in the net.

But so far, all the HDM Double Coronas that i've smoked, none come with the band but who cares, all i know, it's a damn good smoke.

Most cabinet cigar are w/o band, they are suppose to be better age in the factory and hence more expensive than the same cigar in dress box.

Cuba has phased out the "band-less" cigar. Now, the new batches of cabinet cigars also have bands. I think Habanos decided on that for marketing and brand-recognition purposes.

Seems like suddenly, there's lots of "new" guys that are reading and contributing to this forum. Looks like we need a cigar outing soon..

Digital or analog hygrometer.... unless you are willing to spent over

$1k, they both work more or less the same. The good old analog hygrometer are made with human hair

Let me tell you my observation:-

I've three digital & one analog hygrometer.

A = analog (made in France)

B = Diamond crown digital (Accuracy guaranteed by manufacturer)

C = Little havana digital (specs accuracy 4%)

D = Little havana digital (specs accuracy 4%)

X = Hart 1620

Being in a trade where I have access to "lap grade" hygrometer (http://www.fluke.de/comx/show_product.aspx?locale=dede&pid=836), I borrowed one home and did some"calibration/comparison.

1.Salt test comparison

A = 64%

B = 67%

C = 78%

D = 83%

X = 76%

----

2.Wet tower test comparison

A = 90%

B = 99%

C = 99%

D = 99%

X = 99.9%

---

3. Dry test comparison ( using "hungry hippo" in seal box )

A = 60%

B = 57%

C = 67%

D = 56%

X = 51%

---

If you try to figure out a way to correct the above readings, you'll find yourself using rules that 1mm is actually not 1mm.

While most hygrometer are calibrated near correct at rh70% range, all other range are having bigger errors. Now bear in mind that the suggested RH70% is good for temperature at 70 degree F ( which is about 21.1 degree C). So unless you are able to control the temperature of your cigar storage area, don't waste your time on high-end hygrometer.

IMHO, use whatever hygrometer you have in hand as a rough guide, with some experience you should be able to judge if your cigar is too wet or dry by giving them a light pinch once in a while. A cigar too wet will feel soggy, while too dry will feel hard.

Sometimes things can be better if you make them simple.

P.S: The almost the same post I've made at ASP have cause many unhappy people as they are damn sure that their hygrometer are right on the sport with the salt test.

hmm... i'll keep tat in mind. the analog one is readin 88%. not sure if its due to the rain over the past few days... gotta calibrate again and see how it goes.

also, nice to have u back throttle. ur mini humidor is waitin. haha...
