=============================================

I'm already planning my smokes for tomorrow

and have decided on the Edmundo and the Bolivar RC

============================================

Had a Generosos at the Wine and Cigar Cellar Four Seasons Jkt some few months back. Remembered a clear coffee flavored medium strength smoke with quite a long finish. Have already tried a few vitolas from the Cuaba brand and will recommend the Distinguido as Cuaba's best.

Was Trinidad the brand of cigars that Fidel gave to diplomatic visitors and guests?

Many people thought so.......here's the truth....from Fidel himself (excerpt from Cigar Aficionado 1994)

==================================================

Shanken: Trinidad. We understand that it is a brand of cigar that is your own personal brand, which you give to diplomats and friends as presents.

Castro: No. I principally give Cohibas for presents.

Shanken: You don't give Trinidads?

Castro: No. I don't give Trinidads. I give Cohibas. I have been advising the people who are in charge of tobacco production, Cubatabaco, that they should come up with new brands and new blends. This would help the situation with the conflicts over the brands [with similarly named cigar brands from such countries as the Dominican Republic and Honduras]. If we have the best raw material, we have the best soils and the best know-how, why shouldn't we create new brands?

Shanken: The El Laguito factory has a brand called Trinidad, which they say is for you to give as personal gifts. It has become a legend.

Castro: I am not fully aware of that brand, but I assume it is like the Lancero in size from Cohiba.

===================================================

so now we know.......

Just read from Min Ron Nee's book:

Throttle is right in that Fidel Castro doesn't give Trinidad's as diplomatic gifts. He only gives Cohiba's Lanceros.

However, Trinidad's are given out as diplomatic gifts by other memebers of the Cuban government.

hey entity, nice ashtray u have there...

as wat throttle said before, if u like the ryj ex no.4, then the ryj belicoso is a must try. guess i'll have to get my hands on one soon. together wif my ramon allones specially selected

Posted

The RYJ Belicoso is however different from the Ex No. 4 as it is leathery and fuller and richer in my opinion.

I find that the Ex No. 4 comes in grassy at first and builds up to a toasty base with hints of fruitiness. Identical to the VR Farmoso, I cannot tell them apart at all. Same size even.

Throttle, will see how things go :smile: Heard a friend talkin about Cohiba VI, any comments on it? Tried a Partagas short the other day which was an easy smoke. Also heard about La Gloria last night. Must say is the first time I heard of this. I am thinking what to get this weekend :confused: I was recommended Ramon Allones Robusto or St Luis Rey...I have been in the mood for lighter to medium cigars, any suggestions?

The R&J exh No. 4 I had was nice at the start but really can't tell how it will turn out towards the end because it turned into a cigar tragedy...maybe should try again another time..

I saw my brother eating in between his smoke...fries in fact..personally I found that insulting to the cigar...painful sight to me!

The VI is a really solid smoke if you get a good one. Otherwise it can be very overrated simply becos of the brand and the unique canonazo format. Lots of smoke and great burn. It is not a strong cigar and flavors are not totally distinctively cohiba to me. My personal best on ash holding was done with a Siglo VI. I smoked that all the way to the band without the ash dropping at all. I am not a Cohiba fan and only keep a few sticks of Siglo VI with me at any one time.

La Gloria Cubana is one of the old brands in the Habanos line. REcommend Tainos (meaty and salty) besides the Medaille D'or No. 2 (nutty).

The Ramon Specially Selected (Robusto) is a fair smoke but not all too great tasting. it is not a shorter version of the gigantes as both have their own character. The St Luis Rey (SLR) does not have a robusto size but a HErmosos no. 4 (same size as Ex No. 4 and Farmoso and Choix Supreme) enjoyable but nothing to shout for to me.

Sometimes i do eat in between smokes (during cigar dinners) but only food that complements cigars. and fries certainly dont seem to do that.

Do join us, a cigar is always better with friends who appreciate.

Did the Trinidad Reyes at Whitebait and Kale over dinner on friday. Great short smoke, draw was fantastic, wrapper was super dark and oily (think maduro or aged Por Larranaga).

I feel I shouldn't have... but i smoked the Monte 2 at Conn Divan last night. Was rather flat... probably needs to be aged another year and a half at least... better make that 2 years. However, nutty flavours were present... very good burn. Good overall construction.

Two hours later, finished off the night with a RYJ Ex No.4 over at Wine Connection while my friend smoked a Partagas 8-9-8. All time classic partagas taste! Wonderful...

Yes, I was very surprised when i received the Reyes. I requested for dark wrappers and really got them.

HAd a LGC Tainos at Samar last night. Somehow this one turned bitter quite quickly and the rest of the smoke left me with a very burnt aftertaste. :cry:

Hi guys,

I finally tried the much-touted RYJ Exhibition No. 4. Sad to say, it wasn't really to my taste. Woody, toasty, very very little nuttiness, turning fruity and leathery toward the end. Not quite my cup of tea. Gimme a Partagas anyday. However, I might have been prejudiced cos I felt the "bite" of a young cigar very early on and that spoiled the enjoyment of the cigar for me.

Thats said, there's no such thing as a bad Cuban "hecho a mano" (hand-made) cigar. It's either not-the-right time, not-the-right flavour or bad storage.

i had the RYJ Exhibition 4 before, and indeed it was woody and leathery tastes from begining to the end.

not exactly my liking as well, i still prefer D4 or P2 anytime.

especially the P2, young but creamy and smooth, best value for $$. :lovestruck:

sorry to hear that, you should give it another try.

I'm thinking of getting a box of Cohiba Robustos this week and maybe another box of RYJ Hermosos No. 2 EL 2004. Hands are very itchy already.

Was at Con Divan smoking an Upmann Magnum 50. Main flavours are cream and beans. Again not quite my tastes but it should turn out to be a pretty decent smoke when sufficiently aged.

Seeya guys on Wed. No problem with it being a pyramides night.

sorry guy, can't join you on Wednesday night.

Got Fluid Mech & Mech Mat'l test on Thurs & Fri, gotta study a little hard these few days...

Very different tasting notes between Enity and myself for the mag50

I had the Upmann Mag50 EL2005 and it was all dark chocolate and coffee, spomewhat similar to a good first edition Partagas P2

Some bitterness but hardly any beany taste. It was good enough to smoke for me although, the cigar did taste young and not as rounded as one would wish.

==================================================

Entity, which piramides are you smoking tomorrow ? I'll do that same one and we can compare taste notes to synchronise a bit. How about an Upmann No. 2?

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/4128/demimoore2fi.jpg

I could swap my Upmann 2 with your Monte2 or P2.

then we both do the upmann 2.

I will fish the Upmann 2 from the bottom of my humidor to ensure that it doesnt disappoint.

no worries, up to you.
