Hi everybody, I'm currently taking my Class 3 from a private instructor. Just curious about those who have both license, How long and how much do you take to get a class 3 manual license? My TP is on end of december, and i have only taken 3 lessons so far, any ideas on average how many lesson do i have to take a week or a month?

And 2nd question is i roughly got the hang of clutch control but sometimes kan chiong still tend to stall or over rev. Anybody can give me some ideas on how to handle to steering wheel? e.g doing a right turn or U-turn need to steer how many round?

 bro if i ask on ur bike make right turn or u-turn tilt handlebar how many degress, can u answer?

relax bro, this all goes by 'feel'. if ur already a seasoned rider on the road, then just focus on getting the 'feel' of the car and then practice circuit a lot. once this is done, the road portion is dam easy coz of ur riding experience and the car 'feel' u 'catch' already.

keep whacking practice sessions to gain the 'feel' of the car. this is most important because nothing in riding prepares u for these. even though in theory u know how to feel biting point and stuff, its totally different in car. as long u still not comfortable with the car, ur not ready. once u feel comfortable, u will know ur ready coz the road becomes easy.

TS,

When i started my class 3 lessons. I am also very anxious and worried. For the first few lessons, i get alot !$!$%@% from the BBDC instructors. Not too worry, you will get the hang of it. It just comes with practice. ^_^

Regarding the turning of steering wheel.

Some school of taught

1. Numbers of click sound

2. Some steering wheel has the car make on it. Like Honda. See whether the position of the word honda

3. number of times your hands crossed over each other etc.

On the other hand, when you start to turn the car also matters alot. During U-turn, the clearance of your wheel to the kerbs on your right also determine your turning angle

tip of the day for Class 3 learners.. Your hand/arm movements must be faster than your feet.

This is especially true when you are doing your parking.. ;)

True true. When i making u-turn with my bike is with the "feeling" but with car, my instructor taught me what right turn = 3/4 turning of steering wheel, U-turn if not wrong is 1.5-2.0 turning of steering wheel which got me confused.

Till now my instructor still helped/guided me with the steering wheel when negotiating bends or u-turns :$ *paiseh sia* haha.

Normally how many lessons did you guys took? i need to gauge and plan my schedule soon.

Back then i took class 3 and 2a together at BBDC. Did not had the chance to try private instructor.

from the time i signed up for class 3, four months later i walked out with the class 3 sticker on my licence :p

i registered with school, and i went 2 lessons per week without fail. frankly i regret, coz it wld have been faster and cheaper if i had done private from the start. like i said before, my only prob was the 'feel' of the car, and handling the car round circuit stations. once i overcame that, the rest of it was really easy and fast, so much so nearly every lesson my instructor beside me chit chat chit chat instead of instructing me coz i generally go around without problems. take skul means no choice must complete the lessons in order; thats why they chit-chat when they see i no prob, and thats why i say it would have been faster and cheaper if i had taken private.

and steering, frankly i never count how many turns of the wheel, except parking. on the move, its really about 'feel', just like on the bike cannot say the handlebar how many degrees of tilt or how much to lean the bike.

but parking ah... follow every dam step from A to Z of what they tell u, including how many turns of the wheel. its foolproof when done that way.

Agreed! Go for more practice, don't constraint yourself on budget. Yes, we would like to complete the course at the shortest possible time and least money spent. At the end are you well prepared with that minimal practice session? Are you confident enough to go around the course, deal with unforeseen circumstances and pressure by your instructor? :)

It depends on your luck in getting a good private instructor bah. I have friends who swear by private instructors and friends who got so frustrated (abusive instructors) that they ran wee wee wee to the schools.

To the OT: Nobody can tell you how many more lessons you need to go... I took my Class 3 at SSDC and on my final assessment the instructor told me that month itself no need to book anymore lessons and do two a month till TP test. However I was very worried so I decided to just spend the money and go for more frequent lessons. The money may have been wasted but it feels so so so good when the TP Tester handed me the results and said "Go to room 5".

All the class 2 holder I knew passed their class3 within 2 times. They don't overestimate the test and the tester. They are all confident. Of course there're exceptions.

Look at where you want to go. Don't go and look at the chiobu on the streets. Later you drive into her then you know.

Depends on the car.

This is just a trick, more for people, who often have to drive different vehicles.

before getting into the car, do this. Have the car stopped with walking space all around, preferably in a carpark not obstructing anyone.

Put two fingers onto the car side, close your eyes slightly and count your small steps to walk around the car from the front wheel to the back wheel. Stop. Remember the steps difference. Then open the eyes. From there. You step from rear wheel to corner of rear lights, remember the steps and also remember the steps to know how big & wide the boot is and how high the boot is.

Next, from passenger front side, step to know how long your front wheel to your front bonet is.

Now viualise the car w/o the body, just the chasis and the wheels turning. And you either rely on the visual, or the number of small steps you taken, to walk the length of the car, from bonet, to front wheel, and front wheel to back, and the boot. Those are roughly the number of actions you will take to turn a car. Hope that helps.

Private instructor more laoyah. I got one that has a habit of leaving his palms on my knees. And I have ultra ticklish knees......

The leave the palms on my knee wan.....I changed him out fast.

But that means I got to get used to a new instructor and a new car, and I wasted 3 months with that one. And this 2nd one likes to pull at my ear lobes.....until....I wore back all my studs after a certain training course and he got a shock cos the stud sharp end nearly punctured his finger.

That's a minor reason why... I paid more to be in the school. I don't think they dare to do this in schools. Instructor want to correct steering also super careful and I have one that only uses the forefinger and thumb to move the steering wheel.

TS,

Most people starting out driving have this mentality that steering a modern car is actually a 1 for 1 steering direction deal...that if I turn the steering wheel 50%, the wheels also go 50%...It's actually not this way and because of that, this sometimes put learner drivers off that their steering either is sketchy, or jerky and that they can't aim for the perfect curve.

Like mechwira has said, it's all about recognizing how the car feels like when you steer it. Through practice, that is.

For a car during a U-turn, generally you have to go slightly slow. Just remember this perspective: Turning the steering wheel far enough *only* turns the front wheel slightly and give you a comfortable curve.

Be liberal (ie brave) and turn the steering wheel some more if the turn is not tight enough and you want to aim for your lane (if you feel like your car is going to jut out of the road into the grass).

3 quarters of the way just before completing the turn, rotate or let the steering wheel slide back to its centre-point slowly.

EDIT: Good thing it's not a bus. You'll get a huge steering wheel, and goodness knows how many times you have to rotate the steering wheel just to initiate a tight turn.

Errrr......because of the length of the bus....you actually dont do sharp turns. You do wide turns. And the steering wheel is wide, but the slight light angle tilt of your steering wheel, turns the bus.

Abut the same as driving a long van......you need to consider clearance of the long body when turning.

That is why, you dont ride or drive close into a bus when its turning.

well i got my class 3 manual after 10 lessons with private instructor over 2 months. Passed first time, with 10 demerit points. I've been riding my Z since 2007 so i guess if you're familiar with the roads, riding a manual bike on a daily basis, then driving a manual car shouldn't be a problem. i mean seriously, considering I'm a woman and i dare say MOST woman drivers are... well i leave you to complete that sentence. Be confident for your TP and MOST IMPORTANTLY bring your helmet into the car and let the instructor see you're riding! HAHA! i think that helps TTM!

most TP uncles will pass you if you got prior OTR experience..

so long you dun commit any immediate failures..

but if you fail, dun quote me ar!
