Fastest Motorcycle in the world?

With its fairing fitted, the Marine Turbine Technologies Y2K looked long and slightly unusual and gave few clues about its unique powerplant - a jet turbine engine.

Front suspension was by upside down forks, which held a 17 inch carbon fibre Dymag wheel. The turbines lack of engine braking meant extra work for the six piston front brake calipers.

With a power of 286 bhp and a top speed easily exceeding 220 mph (claimed 250 mph), this motorcycle was nicknamed Y2K and was one of the fastest and most powerful motorcycles ever to go into mainstream production - truly a superbike.

The Y2K was powered by a gas turbine jet engine, previously used in a military helicopter. No suprise at the sheer power.

Jet engines have been used for drag racing but not for motorcycle road machines. Despite the Y2K price tag of $150,000, there was plenty of demand to continue building these super machines.

With a Rolls-Royce badge, the turbine was a Rolls Allison 250 as used by the Bell Jet Ranger. It emitts a high pitched whine like that usually used on an airport runway. Jet engines run best at a constant speed, often at 50,000 rpm. The manufacturers added a sturdy gearbox and clutch to handle the power transfer.

The motor runs on diesel, which burns most efficiently. The bike has a small TV screen in the cockpit for the reverse view. When the starter button is pressed, the turbine picks up speed, its whine turning into a shriek until hitting 20,000 revs, from which point the ignition starts and the bike is ready to go.

Because of tall gearing low down accelaration is not remarkable, but when hitting 50 mph the motorcycle really comes alive with an incredible boost of great power with thrilling smoothness and force, whilst the jet engine shrieks in the background. The bike gained 0 to 227 mph in just 15 seconds. Manufacturers claim a top speed of 250 mph. Truly a king among superbikes. Wharp factor 10. I don't fancy paying the motorcycle road insurance bill though!

It looks like a very SLEEPY DOG to me.

*CLAIMED 250MPH = 403KM/HR?
