Why not an Airflow or Venting Machine?

I've been using the Airflow 2 for years daily and it seems to work much better here. The construction of the Airflow is far superior to all the other fabric apparel I've owned - Rev'it, Dainese... The black one still looks very new and you can't tell that it's been well used; the red one shows its use though because the red starts to blacken with use.

I'm currently wearing a Clover Air-Tec when I ride. It's slightly damaged from my last fall and I'm looking for another mesh jacket too. How much was the Air Flow 2? Are you using the Airflow 2 gloves?

I imported it from USA and I believe the list price was US$375. I wouldn't use the Airflow gloves as I believe gloves should be full leather.

I must say the article "The Importance of Protective Gear" and pictures on the BMWMCS website tells a lot about how good the Airflow gear is in a crash.

My Clover's zipper went buggered and I was shopping around for a daily jacket. Finally fixed the zipper and continued to use the Clover. But I reckon it is a question of time before a replacement is needed, hence the hunt for one.

Buying BMW gear from the States you gotta know the size. I think the US Size 36 is like Eur 46 or 48. I saw an AirFlow2, and it is sturdy. Not as light as my Clover, but I think better protection.

Cheers

I think now it is the Airflow 3. US prices are close to US$500, PM's prices should be between 700-800.

I think Clovers offer good protection too, I hit the ground real hard in my last fall and if not for the jacket with the elbow and shoulder pads, I wouldn't be riding or even working for quite a while. It's my second Clover, and I think the current design is better than the ones 3 or 4 years back. The contours of the elbow and shoulder guards gives a better fit with less free play. Most importantly, it works!

coolcat's right about the sizing, you need to know your size. Furthermore many average-sized Singaporeans need the smallest men's size, or the women's sizes for anything less than Euro 46.

The apparel catalog gives a good guide with various measurements, but I can say that the same size doesn't necessarily give you the same fit with different jackets (e.g. I would say the Atlantis is cut slimmer than the Airflow quite significantly).

If anyone is interested in examining an Airflow 2 up close, you can always arrange to see mine. It is out of production now but in my view it's still superior in construction to the Venting Machine that replaced it (though not in cooling).

Hi, read the reviews on revtec sounds good but never heard of it on a bmw before... any comments on the revtec or any bmw owners tried it?

thanks

Mine is the Air-Tek, $280 with elbow/forearm and shoulder armour. Back protector cost another $150 or something like that. I think they have an Air-Tek 2 coming, with a rain coat supplied.

While we are on this topic, Givi came out with a riding jacket, waterproof material, with armour. Saw it at Mah, black and grey colours. Price not that expensive too.

My friend collided into the back of a car along the NSH at 140 km/h wearing a Revitt airflow. He tumbled, suffered no rash. I reckon that most of these manufacturers' stuff are good enough for a tumble, the eventual question seems to always be the compromise of daily riding comfort versus protection.

I love the Clover, it is light, no rain protection but when I need that, I use the BMW liner, or the Arai (thick) raincoat.

I am no beemer Guru, especially when it comes to sound but I hope that I can help. For a start, you can channel mp3 playback through your RT’s sound system via a gadget that connects to your mp3 player’s output into a cassette-shaped gadget that you insert into your cassette player. Available for about $20 from Sim Lim Square.

I do not know whether any other head-unit can replace the BMW’s stock unit. Finally, you may wish to consult specialist car-audio shops, or Future Scootering that does audio for the scooters.

Good luck.

Cheers

Bobos- Thank you so much for the insight. Currently i am havin the cassette gadget mp3 conversion. Its more of the sound quality issue, all the cracking up when i raise the volume. i am the type to hear music when on the road. No doubt, I wld take up your idea of heading to Future scootering. many thanks Coolcat for replying my post..If ever we meet up, coffee on me! cheers.:thumb:

No problem, not sure if I have helped. Can also call my scooter mech botak at 96936520, apparently apart from his MacPherson Road shop, he also has a JB shop where on weekends he installs alarms and stereo etc for car. Helpful chap. He is located opposite Caltex station.

Tell him recommended by runner No. 68. Let me know how it panned out, good to know what can be done for such issues.

A friendly guy... like normal guys, he is more friendly to girl riders... :faint: 1 girl went there to install the IU, he went down to LAB himself to get the bracket for her, help her installed and his charges was close to nothing with full inspection on her scooter.

I went there, he asked me to get the IU from LAB myself... :gun:

Unfair comment. In my opinion, it depends on how free or busy he is at that time or on that day.

I've had him spend more than 20 min on my previous scooter to do a temporary patch a brake calliper problem, with no charge. On another occasion, he did a different patch for me and refused to accept payment again.

I've had him spend hours replacing some parts, when he personally went to Piaggio to borrow some tools, for which he didn't charge much. I've had him clean my scooter after servicing although I've never asked him to.

I've also had him suggest a quick fix, or change fewer parts than I requested, or generally discourage me from changing parts when he's too occupied with many jobs.

My experience is to give him time - like when I'm overseas for a few days - or to visit when he's relatively free.

Wow, so defensive...

All mechs to me are good as I believe that there are no lousy mech, no lousy rider and no lousy bike/scooter.

Just your own preference.

Relax la, guys …. :)

Botak has a tendency not to take money when he knows you better. But I always want to push some money for anything that he does because one of my concerns is that if business is too bad then he may close shop and then liao liao I lose a good scooter mech :giddy: :giddy: . Botak is quite a McGuyver, he had a Mini (Mr. Bean’s car) that he fitted fuel injection and an auto-gearbox.

All mechs has their strengths and weaknesses, in Botak’s case, he does not have a tidy workshop cos’ unfortunately he had to operate out of a back-alley. Also the language barrier if the customer does not speak Hokkien or Mandarin.

Anyway, getting back on (the Beemer) track, my Ohlins suspension are due for servicing, probably a full servicing :giddy: . I do not know what will be done when servicing of suspensions are done, I suppose change oil, gas and the valves? Was quoted $600 from Bikelab. Any other recommendations apart from Sporting Motors?

Cheers

Bobos-Hey coolcat, coincidently i am facing the same issues regarding my ohlins too. had quote done over at a friend's shop, its new shop near Motoworld, do not be moved by the sight of moto-cross bikes around, look for Andrew(Boss) or Matt (mechanic). Was quoted abt $ 480.00(rear),oil change, gas, valves and whatever not,haha..front should be cheaper..but got another avenue..Was told to look for Henry@ Vector One(near the sticker shop,Chiap Lee 219), front@ $ 260.00, Rear@ $ 280.00...but they would only do up the suspensions, you would to have your own bikeshop to disassemble and assemble from your bike, send it to the mentioned shop..Am i myself looking around for the best deals, would be doing up end April..hope that helps:cheeky:
