hw about the gs650 or dakars?

do they have the same electronics problem as their bigger bro?

if you are talking of the single 650gs... they are quite tough. I dont have much problem electrically, initially i use the stock battery and i totally forgot to add water to it but once i change to maint free battery no problem whatsoever. if your bike cannot start, its most probably the cheap plastic switches and buttons

No history of Hall effect sensor replacement according to the service booklet and feedback from the previous owner. I guess I must check the condition of the HES wires one of these days. Mine is an early 2002 R1150R, already 7 years.

Brother Phang is in the "high risk" group :) keke. I like to think of him bucking the trend.

Apparently the failure would be in the sensors themselves.

cheers

The HES itself is a solid state electronic device, it should last a very long time.

From what I read, the culprit is the lousy sensor wires. The insulation of the wires tends to disintegrate over time and cause a short circuit. Water ingress to this area will speed up the process.

I will check the condition of the HES wires in the next alternator belt change at 80,000km. That is another 12,000km to go and probably 2 years later based of my current riding habit :thirsty:

Those I think are the spoils from previous bikes, not unlike Indian's practice of scalpping or like Predator collecting skulls :)

I was hit in a major thunderstorm in Ipoh some years back. No warranty coverage. Had it towed back to KL and replaced it at one independent workshop. Was charged $RM1400 for a new sensor and $RM50 for labour. Big lesson learnt.

Bro Phang.....

you are right that the culprit is the wires, not the senor itself.

Just for your info, yr bike was thorughly inspected and re-wrapped for maost electrical wiring at the 60000km major service. The sensor was found to have no corrosion. I have rode thru 2 major thunderstorms prior to the service with absolutely no problem.

The hall sensor was never replaced. The very detailed parts changed are all recorded in the annex of the service booklet. For even more detail records, PML got it since i did all servicing at PML excpet extra engine oil changes, which is at M-Tech as well as 1 tyre change

Generally, Kawa parts are more expensive than the other big 3s. e.g. An original Kawa oil filter will cost you S$22.50 in Singapore.

I bought all the Kawa parts from Japan.

used parts from Japan Yahoo Auction and new parts from the Kawasaki dealer there.

I paid RRP for the new parts. after all the fund transfer and shipping hassles, it was still cheaper than buying from Singapore Kawa dealer.

But that was when 1SGD=75JPY time, now 1SGD=62JPY probably not worth it. But... you can get any parts, down to a screw or washer from Kawasaki Japan and always ex stock.

I like the rallye 2 pro :thumb:

I have heard some complaints about there being too many pockets.

For jacket venting, BMW really thought it through carefully. The full arm zips, front and rear vents really cover alot, and the fold ups are just icing. I haven't yet had the heat to take the sleeves off, but one day I might. It's nice that the armor is attatched to the mesh liner rather then the sleeves, so there is some measure of protection if you ride without them.

The goretex liner works great. I was in a deluge, with 2 inches of water in the road, and only the top of my back got wet near the neck, no fault of the jacket. The whole thing dried off in the sun in about an hour with no riding. I'm going to take some of the cordura waterproofing and see if I can't do something with the jacket since you'll get wet even if it sprinkles if you don't have the liner in.

Trousers. They're nice. Good venting in a good spot that actually gets airflow, compared to vents in other pants I've used. They're not baggy and flappy, another problem with other brands. My only beef, and it's a big one, is that you have to take them on and off as pants. No big zip up the sides, so you've really gotta get into them when wearing pants underneith. If there was a full side zip, I'd wear them everyday. Hell, I'm having my tailor look at them to see if we can't put on in. The goretex liner is the same deal as the jacket, very effective, but a pain in the arse to put on since there is no zip on them at all.

I use the Airflow 3 (and have an extra one that I'll be putting up for sale shortly). Just upgraded from the Airflow 2, and it's slightly improved in terms of back insert and venting. The quality of the construction is top grade and it's one jacket that will last you a really long time.

I prefer Airflow 3 to the Venting Machine.

A problem with BMW apparel is that the smallest men's size is sometimes too big for Asians.
