There was oil leaking below the gear box. Was told that the oil leak into the clutch thru the drive shaft seal so need to change the clutch too

This is interesting, that a gearbox oil leak would lead to a clutch change. I thought that clutch is usually changed after the clutch disk had worn out. Unless the reason for the clutch change is that work had already been done for removal of the gearbox.

Keep us posted?

Cheers

If the leak contaminated the clutch friction plate, you have to change it.

The leaks which possibly contaminate the friction plate that I could think of:-

1. Crankshaft main seals (engine oil)

2. Gearbox input shaft seal (gear oil)

3. Leaking clutch slave cylinder, the clutch fluid will travel along the push rod from the slave cylinder and migrate to the clutch friction plate (clutch fluid)

visited my bike at m-technik just now, the right cylinder block have a piece of metal plate crack off, according to the mech the piece drop into the oil pan. the piston is gone and there is some score mark on the right side on the engine body.

hopefully the inside of the engine is not damaged, will have to open it up to check....

Nothing quite like the first day of getting a new bike (whether new new or pre-loved)

Welcome to our little corner.

On a separate note ... taxis go to Cherating from Kuantan for RM50 one-way :) Here's my fav pic of the whole trip; this stretch of beach is just about 50 metres or so from the road, separated by trees. Really nice to ride through.

Wear what is comfy for ya. I own a Shoei from 4 years back, and added one more because I like the design, and now both helmets very nicely allow me to wash the insides, as well as to stow them on my bikes. The peak cap for the TX is nice, and I suspect shady to the eyes but I think the helmet not very aero-dynamic for 140 km/h and above speeds, noise level increased.

If you are into the TX-styled helmets, HJC has a carbon one, ...

... and Shoei has the Hornet.

hi guys,

is there any difference bet the models of gs650 with, and w/o abs?

thnks..

Yes, the fact that one has and the other doesn't :) Seriously, .... the base models are same except for the installation of ABS. I think ABS is a great safety feature, yet more often than not it is also a source of potential (and usually not cheap) mechanical breakdown. Some claim that ABS brake systems are harder to bleed. Incidentally, off roadies usually do not want or elect to turn off the ABS while off-road.

Cheers

hi guys,

is there any difference bet the models of gs650 with, and w/o abs?

Do you mean the new F650GS Twin?

ABS..well...its the same old same old arguments really.

ABS is generally beneficial to any rider less abled than a MotoGP rider. The act of 'feathering' your brakes in the event of a lock-up is something not too many people have the presence of mind to accomplish in a panic braking scenario.

Theoretically, stopping distances are longer IF ABS KICKS IN. However, this is in situations where you would have locked one or both wheels if you didn't have ABS. Shorter stopping distance is no good if by stopping you mean high-siding or low-siding or generally crashing from a locked wheel. For every man who claims to be able to control a locked wheel in emergency braking situations I bet there are 10 that ended up on their arses.

ABS = more expensive bike

ABS = more residual value on resale (lots of punters look for ABS bikes)

ABS = way of the future (Honda will have ABS on its entire range by 2010)

On the F800GSF650GS, you can turn the ABS off for off-roading or if you don't like it.

If the ABS fails, you still have fully functioning brakes.

On balance of judgement, I think ABS makes sense for the vast majority of riders, most of the time. Not all of them (especially old crusty ones or extremely talented racers) but the majority.

I should add that for all those claims that ABS increases stopping distances, there are equally lots of situations where a rider on an ABS-equipped bike is able to stop quicker because he knows he can't lock his wheels up so he keeps on applying the levers harder.

Without ABS, a lot of riders chicken out of applying maximum braking 'in case' they lock up. And then take longer to stop.

The only study I can find http://www.msf-usa.org/imsc/proceedi...ngDistance.pdf seems to suggest the following:

  • ABS gives consistent braking across different bike loads, speeds and brake

combinations

  • No rider skill required

  • No learning process to use ABS

Whereas:

  • Non-ABS braking requires greater rider skill

  • Rider performance and ability to 'threshold brake' is required for shortest possible stopping distances

  • And even so, the BEST non-ABS braking distances are still not as good as AVERAGE ABS braking distances (in these test conditions, straight line wet/dry and dry bends).

Even assuming two locked wheels gives the best friction for stopping, there can't be many bikers who can control that on a road in emergency braking scenarios.

Apologies for the wall of text

Just took over a 01 Dakar, has been experiencing stalling at traffic lights, have to keep revving at stops.

Does anyone experience same problem during stopping at traffic and deccerlateration? Read that it happened to most 01 GS650.

Anyway to reticfy or minimise the problem?

hi, you might want to change your air filter to KNN and spark plug to irudium plugs. it did help in the stalling problem of my f650gs, and also check yr batt

NPNT, congrats! Enjoy the ride.

I remember telling myself how odd the design of a GS was to have the blocks placed horizontally instead of the classic V-twin.
