Didnt know the 650 is an 800cc capacity bike till todae.

It was not until recently. This is the cheaper / more beginner version of the F800GS; shares many common parts.

http://www.motornews.at/cms/upload/berichte_motorrad/bmw/bmw_f800gs_modell08_2.jpg

I saw the bikes and it is interesting that the R1200R shares the same instrument cluster too.

The new F650GS is not a descendant of the single cylinder, twin exhausts F650GS that came into the market in 2000.

http://bikeintro.com/wp-content/bmw-f650gs-2000-text.jpg

From what I read somewhere, the "F" designation will henceforth be used for the parallel-twins, while the "G" for the singles. K and R will continue to be used for in-line and boxer respectively.

As always, I do stand corrected if I am in error.

Cheers

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to take the new F650GS for a test ride to Kuantan and back. The route of choice was E3, the coastal road on the east side of west malaysia.A road with hundreds of curves, steep upslopes and downslopes, and a few good straights. Here is my honest opinion of the bike.

The road was rather bumpy near Mersing, and bumpy sandy curving roads are usually a receipe for accidents, but not for the 650gs. I could take 130kph corners with ease. Even my friend with a much larger faster hypersports bike had to take more caution when cornering at such speeds here. The 650gs's suspension is a lifesaver, absorbing all bumps, potholes etc during cornering.

On the straights i must say the 650gs may not be powerful enough to satisfy the speed demon in us. Certainly not me. 0-160kph no problem at all. But from 160-180++ it took forever. Wind protection was good at 150kph and comfortable cruising will be 140kph at exactly 5000rpm on 6th gear.

The road above Mersing to Kuantan was curvy, long sweeper bends, perfect for high speed cornering. The 650gs was doing 140-150kph in the corners which kinda stumped me. Before making this trip I'll never imagine an enduro bike with 2 huge boxes doing 150kph corners but the F650GS did just that.

Next we arrived at this stretch of road which was just beside the sea. Beautiful road, beautiful scenery. I had this 'brilliant' idea of riding along the beach to test the F650GS's offroad capabilities. NEVER NEVER NEVER ride a bike on the beach without knobby tyres. My bike started to sink in the fine sand and I was stuck. Good thing my friend was a body builder. With much effort, we managed to haul the bike outta e sand back to the road.

Fuel consumption of the F650GS is incredible. I was getting above 20km to a litre. All in all we travelled almost 800km. (2nd link to gelang patah to Kuantan and back down to singapore) Piece of cake with the beemer, although i must admit the seat is a little hard. Usually when i tour, I'll end up feeling quite fatigued however this time I felt fine. Still had energy to go church in the evening. Lastly don't be alarmed if ur new 650GS's signal goes off by itself. BMW has equipped this bike with self cancelling signals. This bike, although not the fastest, is easily the most comfortable bike i've toured with.

Good: comfortable, agile, good suspension, fuel efficient, light

Not so good: hard seat

Great review :clapping:

Rode up t0 Rompin pre-dawn over the weekend for some fishing; learnt that it's tough to ride in fog; heavy condensation totally messed up the visor, and my glasses too. Was quite hairy, actually.

Cheers

That is very good FC on an 800cc.

But what's the FC my fellow GSA riders are getting on average? Anyone?

On a 33 litre, my 08 GSA clocks in aboout 450km before reserve, on Reserve it says it has approx. 70km.

I usually clock 500km on average.

No idea if its good or bad.... and oh yeah.... i am 188cm and weighing 107kg...that must have taken a hit on the mileage for my fuel range.

ezkhairy I've got my Remus from M-Tech at Ubi. Checked with PML before installation and they assured me it won't void the warranty.

I reckon that buying online may well be cheaper; go ask at PML and compare. Try shopping online for the best prices. Remember to look at the BMW sizing chart for sizes, or compare sizes with people who own the gear for sizes.

Remember to look at the BMW sizing chart for sizes, or compare sizes with people who own the gear for sizes.

The problem with this approach is that the sizing differs slightly for different models of the jackets and trousers.

For instance, the same size EU 46 trousers - the Light and Easy seems too tight although the Atlantis 3 in the same size is a little loose. But for the jackets, I found the Atlantis 2 to be smaller than the Airflow 2 in the same size. And I found out to my detriment that the Airflow 3 is smaller than the Airflow 2 of the same size - so I had to go and get another bigger one. :slapforehead:

I think you shouldn't worry so much. there was once my consumption was 13km/litre despite whatever speed I'm travelling. I push back to PML, they did a software update and everything was back to normal.

There is always other factors like individual riding style, weight, terrain, petrol quality, aftermarkets exhaust...etc

I guess if you can clock 450km or >, it should be fine. A very accurate calculation would be, to pump full to the brim at GP, then do a 200km non-stop to ayer keroh and then top it up again. And see how much is your consumption at constant speed.
