Hi,

Im considering getting a 10 yrs old R1150RT, but the mileage is rather high at 130k. What would be the maintenance issues and common problems for such a high mileage RT?

Thanks for any advice.

Do some reading up on the differences between R1100RT and R1150RT, especially in the ABS section.

I saw the flashing ABS brake light when I viewed the bike. Seems that there are a few reasons from the thread I ve read, like low batt or low brake fluid. Is it a big problem to fix and any workshop that I can send the bike for a check-up before I decide to put my money down?

Note that the ABS lights will flash when the bike is just started and the bike is stationary. This is normal. Flashing after moving off then is a problem.

Think he's referring to the EVO brakes issue.. if got problem then it will cost a bomb to fix. Better have it checkout at PML and do a full flush if the fluid hasn't been changed in a while. Other than that the usual HES wire issue. Mechanically wise shouldn't be a problem with this mileage.

Owner let me test ride for a while, and the ABS still flashes alternately after going round carpark and engine warmed-up.

The ride feels jerky, but then, it might be me not being used to BMWs and the clutch. Thanks for the advice.

Hi,

Depending on the frequency of the flash, the system is trying to tell you the error. Here's the codes:

Gen OFF, ABS ON = Only residual braking in both circuits.

Gen OFF, ABS flashes at 1 Hz = ABS not available. Pull-away test not completed.

Gen OFF, ABS flashes at 4 Hz = Only residual braking function available in both circuits.

Gen ON, ABS off = rear light/brake light defective.

Gen ON, ABS flashes at 1 Hz = At least one brake circuit without ABS.

Gen ON, ABS flashes at 4 Hz =At least one brake circuit in residual braking function mode.

Gen AND ABS flashing alternately at 1 Hz = Fluid level in Integral ABS too low, or Low voltage.

Wow, Thanks for that.

I think its the last scenario.

Appreciate that.

Anyone uses the touratech wind deflector on their GSA?

The church is near, but the road is icy. The bar is far away, but I will walk carefully.

So all hope is not lost.. ;-) a change to the battery or a full system flush with diagnostic at PML shall so the job. Good luck!

Hi guys

I just got my r1150gs not long time ago and currently having this problem. The bike is causing back

firing lately especially when kicking down from a higher gear to a lower. It do not happen all the time but when it does, a loud spark or 'explosion' occur. At times I can hear just minor back firing but I can deal with that kinda noise except for the louder ones.

Just for info, to me...the bike engine and all doesn't seems to give me any suspicion but however the bike was fitted with a Laser exhaust by the previous owner.

I need some advise from any kind souls here on what might be the reason and how I can solve that issue in order to enjoy my ride better.

Of course my main suspicion is the exhaust or there is too much carbon...but that are just some of my inexperience thoughts. Or maybe the spark plug. Any Beemer riders out there experience any back firing after they change their exhaust?

And anyone knows how much to get back a stock pipe and where I could get it? A million thanx...

Err.. quick search over the web refers to retuning of ignition timing? Especially if you have an aftermarket exhaust..

Not unusual for the boxer to have a 'backfire' when downshifting. It happens on stock exhaust too.

I had the power chip, KN filter, Laser Ypipes and Laser can. In order of backfire 'loudness':

1. stock

2. Laser with silencer

3. Laser without silencer (less torquey)

First of all, thank you so much for all the feedbacks. According to seagoose, it's not unusual for the boxer to have backfiring. So that means it's kinda normal isn't it. But for tall girl, you experienced the same thing till you put back the stock? Hhhhmmmmm, anyone out there has one? Might give it a try though...or where could I get it?

Yes its normal for a boxer engine. Im using Laser end can with remus headers. The only diff between a stock pipe and aftermarket ones is its gruntness.

Smooth on a stock grunty on aftermarket.. Depends on individual.

In terms of backfire u will have it on stock pipes as well, maybe not as loud i guess. A common backfire is when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. And on 2nd gear speed up to 50km/h and fully close throttle.

Its a common thing, as this will differentiate between a boxer and other types of engines.

Not only a BMW even a Subaru has this.

Just my humble opinion.

yup...best is to ride more, worry less.....:thumb:

Agreed.. Tis kind of bike personally for me is the type tat u shd use often. If its parked for too long problems will arise. But if used frequently its a dream bike. Its the reverse from a Japs bike. Well considering the crazy amount to spend on our ride when there is a problem.

Just a 0.002 cents worth of thought.

Hi there. Actually I am using a laser end can(dual cam) as well. I also face alot of super loud back fire when I am using the sport muffler. After which I try changing to the legal insert, the loudness of the backfire is reduced significantly. But there is one problem. Do you face huge vibration coming from the exhaust? I just changed the final drive bearing. So its definately from the exhaust. So do you face the similar problem? Anyway to resolve it?
