Yup it's just not worth if you're coming in alone. Actually the price we paid for was around US$350 back then, the price hike was only recent. Guide is mandatory according to the regulations but we managed to work something out where we ride guideless on some legs. You need to work out your itinery and routes with a tour representative where they will submit them to the authorities for approval. Anyway, you need the tour operators at the border crossings.
