Pros. You get a good deal and maybe some freebies.

Cons. You get a lousy deal and feels cheated.

For both above.

It isnt about good/bad bike shops. You have options. Might be best if you make friends that are experienced. Dont listen too blindly to any one group of friends and if you are still too shy about it. Lets just pretend that we online are your friends. Gives us some details. We give you advise and then you buy your bike based on your own decisions can? No hurry.

1) Age

2) Budget/savings/allowances per month/pay/any other debts?

3) Profession/student

4) home location

5) work/school location

6) height/weight/height from crotch to heel

7) purpose to ride:tourings/transport/sport/leisure/experience something new/be more atas then your same age friends

8) any other future asiprations? degrees/jobs/marrying/cripple for life?

Once you figure out the answer to Kitty's qns, think you would roughly know what bike you'll be getting and whether 1st hand or 2nd hand.

Perhaps short list 2-3 possible bikes, and read up and find out more about the bikes. Then visit a few bike shops to look-see, check price and check their service, ask them about the bike you want to buy, see how they answer you. Search the forum to see what were the previous experience of people who used the same shop. Eventually, you'll figure out which shops are lemons and which are slightly more reliable and honest.

And, take your time to buy. Don't get pressured from bike shop.

LOL. Thank you Allen.

1) Still young, if buying installment bike, still need garantor, which means administration charges and miscellanous fees.

2) Budget looks more then enough to instead not buy installment, and can buy straight off any private seller. But I liked to minimise it for you further. 2nd hand bikes dont have to cost so much in machine price. And once you throw in insurance, transfer fees, some road tax, change of parts and even petrol, cashcard, season parking & coupons. You only hav S$800-S$1000/- machine price. Take note that you need to factor in the petrol, parking and even bike servicing into yoru monthly allowance budget.

3) Student, will mean you need something with box (es), to hold books, bags and some other items essential to riding. Maybe pillion a g/f & family members.

4) & 5) Home and school location is far. Can understand why you would want a bike. And since locations is far apart, I rather you be shopping for a bike that is fuel efficient and can be slow & safe, then something that goes fast.

6) & 7) Very tall & skinny. (But then, this auntie is 1.52 metres tall, so you all are tall to me.) I would suggest a motard ie. scrambler with road tyres to make use fully your height. Or a scooter like a X9 for its storage. But since you are considering it for sport. Then a Motard will be a better option. You can go for trails and so on by just changing the tyres. Eventually, you will upgrade and possibly be riding enduro bikes.

8) Consider Scramblers/motards, X9 & Gileras Scooters. Learn to change out cables and even servicing some portions yourself. You might still have national service to consider later. And there are costs you have not encountered yet.

I think better don't buy, really really.

400/mth a bit tight, when insurance and road tax come, you will not make it, especially p plate....... i earning 7-800/mth, still a bit dangerous, do note your travel distance everyday also quite far.... meaning your maintainence needs to come more often + more wear and tear...

BUt all in all, can understand your desire for bike.... but do plan properly because i still don't think you can make it...

Be sure to allocate some budget to a good helmet, not those half face piss pots.

A good full face helmet + riding jacket = $300. Enough.

Add on to that if you can.

Good Gloves, rollarblading knee pads, covered shoes & thick jeans at least. A Personal Accident policy, if you can only get 3rd party insurance for your bike.

Opt for a mesh riding jacket with armours at the elbows, considering Singapore weather. Factor those into the budget as best as you can.

I've still got some money in bank at least 2k. After covering insurance + machine price.

Sportsbike. But is KRR/SP a wise choice?

I guess i would only buy bike with full cash. :p

Actually is 2500 for the bike + Insurace around 3-4k. I still have spare 1-2k

I only need to bring laptop :cheeky:

Actually i've been considering KRR/SP but i heard is a problematic bike. (no offence)

No. Your spare 1-2k is actually your savings, if nothing happen, use for next insurance + road tax.

SP/KR is old bike, chances of higher maintainence + lower fc is already there. if 400/mth for your bike, not including living expenses, then yes enough. BUT if your monthly allowance is 400/mth, you will struggle.

Petrol now is at 1.9/2 /liter. each time you pump about what, 15? One month put maybe pump 6 times, 90/mth. + Season parking 15= $105

Assuming you have no other bike matters then 400 a month is more than enough, but plus your living expenses 10/day...

so yea there abouts... i'm not drying to wet your case, but a bike should bring you convenience, not overwhelming stress.

Another side note, try not to touch your savings, is for wet days, chain + sprocket 100++ already, tires one set SP i not sure, my phantom 160...

1) Thing is. A class 2b sports bike. because of its sports fairing.....thats all that plastic shiny fenders you see.....is why your insurances is higher. And if you are not planning to go to track. You take on a sports bike to speed on the road? That could get your licence reduced to just paper in mere careless seconds in Singapore roads. Not to mention possibly maiming or killing you whithin the first year of riding.

Track is called sports....because on the track, the kerbs are not so high and the railings, lampost and on coming traffic is non-existent. There is also more bigger lanes for you to sports, speed and corner safely. Not so on the actual roads.

2) On a bike. You need the box for laptop, for when it rains and your bags might get soaked. Box is also good for raincoat, street directory, miscellanous tools and your helmet, riding jackets, gloves and a spare set of clothes to change into at your destination. Even can throw in shower gels and towels. We are sunny Singapore which goes sunny to flooding in mere seconds.

3) Why I like to discuss your height. Because tall persons, on a sports bike. develop back problems. A motard or a normal street bike, gives you a more upright position to lesson your back problems or is more forgiving when you are injured and still need to ride.

KR and SP insurance for P-Plate, at your age would be about 1k - 1.2k.

You see whether you need box or not. Box is practical, lots of stuff can store inside. including helmet. Sport bike with box look silly.
