for carb is simple if u r mechanical confident to dirty ur own hands.

but need to do trial n error to find out which is the best settings for ur bike.

four points to look out for:

1) main jet.

2) slow jet.

3) jet needle eclip position.

4) pilot (air) screw.

for efi,

big bikes have those fuel remap gadgets like power commander, cobra fi2000, etc.

small bikes, there r no electronic devices yet but if u talented in electronics n willing to take risk.

u can try diy microsquirt device. http://www.microsquirt.info/

else just wait till someone made it for ur bike.

it's ur soul bike if u put ur heart into it.

reason why small bikes r force into efi, it becoz of euro emission std else manufacturers cant sell their bikes.

efi cost r very high, this is due to high cost components like fuel pump, MAS (mass air sensor), O2 (oxygen sensor), TPS (throttle position sensor) n ECU (the brain, electronic computerize unit).

all these components vs a single carb.

manufacturing cost a thousand (maybe more) vs a hundred dollars (maybe less).

tat's why this is a real problem.

riders do not know tat running lean (saving fuel) do more harm than good.

they will not enjoy their ride becoz their engine is under performance even for small engine capacity.

30~35 km/l fc for a 4-strokers class 2b bikes is still great fc compared to big bikes n cars.

how to check if ur bike is running at optimum?

check spark plug electrode colouration will indicate air/fuel mix:

1) brown or tan is good air/fuel mix (combustion temperature 600~700 deg C).

2) grey is lean, white is too lean (combustion temperature above 700 deg C).

3) black is rich, sooty is too rich (combustion temperature below 600 deg C).

here a thought, u may or not understand......u can't change the law of physics.

wat it means is tat if u defy the law of physics, u get a bad/poor results.

saving fuel to the extreme, set carb to the leanest, is same as defying the law of physics (results in post#22).

The "Some guy" called the wrong company. He should have called up Boon Siew and not Hong Leong. Haha.

you got me! hahaha.

anyways, yeah its not gonna be here.

@stsoh, my phantom gets around 35km/l. but i check my spark plugs, its burning fine, tan colour on the tips. instead of clean white(lean) or black (too rich)

care to explain?

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

not all bikes r the same even though they r same made/brand.

tight or loose tolerances, wear n tear r at different rate, use of different eo, the way a rider twist the throttle, etc.

u r getting brown electrode tip than it's fine.

u r having good air/fuel mix for ur bike.

ur bike is running at correct combustion temperature.

as u r fully aware tat some phantom r running very hot tat their eo evaporates n needs to top up. also some will burnt n melt their shoe sole n bike cover when it touches the muffler (indication of extreme heat).
