Paint For Rusty Exhaust

Hey guys, any more spraying session? Just got a 2nd hand S4 and the exhaust already rusty. Never dismantle the exhaust before so thought of tapping with a experience biker to do it together. BTW is it easy to dismantle?

Has anybody used Hammerite paint ,

It is availeble at Vin mart meant for metal and does not need a primer, can paint directly on rust. This is proven tried it at my house windows frames which was rusty,dirty painted it 6 years ago still good. But I don't know whether can tahan the heat.

Removing of pipes are every easy work... try it b4 on my CBR... just unscrew and screw them back....

get a high temp spray at a paint shop off lavander street just few shops beside minerva

tried the rj ($6) brand......it sucks big time.....gonna redo it again..it crack n peel off after less than 2 weeks

think will pop by the hardware shop near cdc to get the red hot to try out after rj use finish

my Spark z exhaust, the end part start to rust. have tried WD40 last nite, same thing i saw again, but this time start to spread. Shall i open up the screw to de-rust it?

After so many comments, spraying of header is not 100% lasting,

any one know where to chrome the header or to apply anti stain coating

If possible pls state the price(roughly)

Just redo my S4 Vtec's exhaust header last week, quite satisfy with the result. Looks like brand new and well worth the effort.

 

Material used

3 cans of Bosny Hi-temp BBQ pit spray paint (withstand 1200f - $8.50 each)

Some sandpaper

Thinner

Metal scrub wool

Wire Brush

 

Procedure

1. Remove header

2. Completely remove the existing paint to bare metal. The best is use thinner and the metal scrub wool.

3. Sand down those rusty part and ensure no more rust stain. Use the wire brush for those stubborn rust stain.

4. Make sure the exhaust header is clean, smooth and dry before spraying.

5. 1 can of the a/m spray paint can only suffice for 1 coat, I did 3 coating for mine. The final appearance of the paint job doesn't look thick and the surface is superb!!!!!!

15 Mar 05 - condition remains the same, superb....

15 May 05 - condition remains the same, superb....

15 Jul 05 - beside normal stain thru riding, after a wash down, condition remains the same, superb....

I completely agree. I re-sprayed my friend's WR200 stomach + header and the end result was well worth the 1-2 hrs spent!

 

We used sandpaper and a wire brush attached to a drill (50mm in diameter, $2 at Daiso, $5 at Homely) to get rid of most of the rust. The brush makes quick work of the surface rust! Definitely a time-saver. (1 can of Bosny Hi-Temp spray (~$8) was enough for 3+ coats.

It's unfortunate that parts of the stomach had warped (why, we don't know) and had become deformed. No amount of sanding by hand could get the surface flat. That would have certainly been achievable with an angle grinder, but to be honest, it probably wouldn't have been worth the extra effort as we got most of the rust off by hand.

 

We also made the mistake of purchasing glossy hi-temp spray. The spray's available in flat black, a colour which would have suited a scrambler better than glossy black.

I brought the 1st can of the Bosny BBQ Pit Spray Flat Black (matt finish) at the Geylang Serai Paint ship for $12.80...... Damn expensive!!!!!!!!!!!

 

It last me only 1 coat for my S4 exhaust header. Then purchase another 2 cans of the same spray at industrial park paint shop, cost only $8.50/each.

just resprayed my exhaust a week ago.

 

model- NSR150

 

items:

sandpaper

newspaper

RJ hi temp spray x1

hairdryer

essential tools

 

2hrs to sand off the fricken rust

 

90mins to get the fcken screws off the gasket cos it was SOOOOOOOOOO tight, worse than virgin pvssy.

 

i didnt care too much about the look so i just sprayed very generously.

 

i plug the hairdryer into the hole after each layer of spray to allow it to dry faster cos i was doing at night.

 

sprayed 3 layers overall, 1 extra layer for the previously rusted areas.

 

buay tahan, fell asleep for 25mins when waiting for the last layer to dry.

 

end up too sleepy cannot tahan so fixed the pipe back without it completely drying, think i messed up the last layer.

 

so far so good, no rust but pipe looks messy due to reason stated above.

 

will try to update on rust condition.

update 05/01/05:

 

so far so good, no rust but the paint seemed to have lost its normal black color and is looking faded. signs that rust is beginning to settle?

still looking good.

 

the faded look is not due to rust, its just the normal look when it has dried.

 

no rust has settled yet as far as i can see, but the top end of the pipe (not exhaust) seems to be losing its color faster than the other parts...perhaps due to higher temperature?

everything still as it was from last update. there will be no more updates...till rust appears!

used this Mar-Hyde brand One-Step that converts rust to black primer without sanding (aka tough black coating)...

 

after drying for half a day (full 12 hours), applied Derusto brand Heat Master Enamel spray that resists temperature up to 1000° F (537°C).. sprayed two coats... dried for 1 full day...

 

fixed it up

 

use bike on the next day...

 

paint on exhaust peeled off totally... (or 90%)... metal is exposed... but hey! No rust!

 

btw which is the header part? the big fat chunk at the end of the exhaust?

that part is safe... at least i see it's safe...

 

since i think there is a difference in temperature in the whole exhaust pipe (hotter at the front of the exhaust system), so i conclude the primer not useful at high temp. Will try just spraying with the high temp spray alone.

the big fat chunk at the end is the end can. the header is the 4/2/1 pipe/s leading out from the front, depending on what bike u ride

simple, use a size 12 socket, den unscrew the screws. total should have 8 screws. 2 for each head. if u have any more doubts, pm me, maybe we can arrange for u to come to my place den i show u how to take out

One option that does work quite well is to have your pipes sandblasted and then aluminium coated. The coat is applied by a process of hot spraying the molten metal over the blasted pipes. It leaves a semi-rough texture, but will not allow rust to form on the steel pipe, it is not a shiny chrome like finish.

 

The process is fairly quick and it is not that expensive. I had my touring bike pipes done in this way and have not had any problems with rust. They are in good condition after 12 yrs of use. I think that firms specialising in protective coatings, such as used in building sships etc, may be the best bet, as I dont know who can do this in Sg.
