How do we recharge our batteries when they are low?

Only way is to bring the battery to a workshop or push start.

I was thinking of getting a solar powered charger to recharge them, but most chargers give out 5 volts for use for hp charging.

Any electrical engineering students here can help solve the problem?

If you want to recharge motorcycle battery, you need to buy a battery charger. I got my CTEK from limbat. Trickle charger. Just take out battery, bring home and charge. Takes less than 1hr for a full charge. But for bigger batteries, will take a damn long time. I use for my bro's car, will take days and days. But he always never drive for days and days so just leave the charger and battery there and let it charge.

So i got a DECA charger from mustafa, use only 1 or two times, charge very fast but in the end, found out that its the charging of the car spoil, so the battery also spoil. Now the car scrap already and i sold the DECA charger.

Another way is to jumpstart from someone's car or bike la. I ever got start his car with just my small YBR battery only. Works all the time. But if battery really a problem, then you might as well just invest in a battery charger. Less than 100 bucks can get.

i got ever see some 12V solar chargers online. i tink can fit to the bike lah, but i tink it needs to be quite big size (where to mount?) to be of much effect since solar charging is not that high. if your bike is not a daily ride, i tink a getting a charger n charging it at home seems more feasible n effective. increase the longevity of your battery since it is never drained.

another trick is disconnect the + and - cables if not riding for long time.

Thanks Naim. Problem is that one of my bikes use up alot of electricity when cranking up the starter motor, so even disconnect also no use.

Did a search on Ebay, found alot of giant size solar panel chargers.(some are 120cm x 50cm)

More useful for cars than bikes. One even had rubber suckers to attach to the windsreen of the car when it is parked. :)

One china seller was selling individual cells for charging 6v batteries, and showed a picture of conncting 2 of his cells to charge a 12v car battery. But then hor.... postage is $10 per piece, I might as well try my luck at Sim Lim see if can buy one at that price.

if thats ur issue, i dun tink a solar cell might help much ah. cux the current that ur starter motor pulls wen cranking is pretty high. a better alternative is either getting a larger capacity battery or a dry cell (LiFePo) battery such as Ballistic. the dry cells are pretty strong in their cranking even if repeatedly. check out youtube for sum videos. seems impressive. its expensive, but assured to solve this problem u r facing. :) such my 2 cents.

your alternator should be able to charge your battery. If its not happening then your alternator must be spoilt.

Not entirely true.

My bike is a BIG single cylinder engine, and that requires a lot of juice from the battery to start it up. FYI the starter motor is as big as the ones you find in cars.

Now in order to charge up the battery, ideally the motor (for most vehicles cars or bikes) should be revving up to 4,000 RPM for 10 mins or so.

My workplace is only 4 km away, and has 3 traffic lights along the way, so I can only go so far and only so fast. I usually get to my workplace in 5-10 mins max going at 60-70km/hr. If I go at 4,000 RPM in top gear I will be going at 100km/hr on a 60km/hr road and be 14km away in 10 mins.

So you can imagine starting the engine up twice a day but not running through enough RPM to charge up the battery. Even with brand new battery and new alternator, the battery will also get drained off after some time. Mine lasts around 2 weeks before they get drained. Only way to keep the battery charged is to go riding mindlessly for around 15-20 mins, which I find meaningless, so I am looking for a way to DIY charge up my batteries.

Speak to limbatt. That time I was down at one of his reconditioning sessions. He was speaking of a solar setup used to charge batteries which he has and he can customise to suit your needs. He showed me the setup he was using at his place to trickle charge some batteries or to power some stuff within his office. Pretty impressive and yes, definitely possible. However, it was a fixed array which I saw. Not sure if he has any meant for mobile mounting. You'd have to check with him!

yup he planned to recharge batteries using solar power massively so if u got unwanted batteries, pls pass to him. all sizes and type accepted :)

Check already, the solar set up will cost several hundred dollars. :(

maybe u wanna consider getting another battery plus a charger? since u say it gets drained every 2 weeks, just keep one on trickle charge, then switch them out on a weekly basis. troublesome but cheapest option i can think of.

10w panel=usd40. 3a solar charg controller=10usd. Wires=usd1. 2 pc of t split from IU connection. Thats abt it. Of course your own way of mounting the panel at your desired location on bike
