good choice. castrol power oil is a rather "thin" oil. it should suit an engine calling for 30wt. ah boy really sell engine oil at great price.

thanks. cant believe ill hit 1k mileage in 3 weeks. :cheeky:

What bike are you rolling on isopropyl?

My uncle hates ahboy because he bought a faulty ngk plug from there hahaha

i just riding a spark 135. thinking of upgrading but after comparing nothing beat a kup for day to day travelling:cheeky: it just so down to earth bike.

i think it should be fine if you push the distance abit to monthly oil change. one of my colleague own a magic for about 5-6years. when the oil light is on, he always reset it and change oil when the second or third time the light is on.

he gave the bike away after that to another colleague just like every bike he own. the other colleague sold the bike away in less then a year saying he keep falling while riding the majic and the engine start to develop problem and is not worth to repair.

very often people asking about what type of oil to use. here something about oil to help making choices easier.

lubrication generally come in 3 states. hydrodynamic, mixed film and boundary. here are the general Coefficient of Friction (CF) a few lubrication film in the engine.

1) No lub CF generally @ 0.5

2) Anti-wear(AW) / Extreme pressure (EP) film CF @ 0.1-0.2

3) Friction modifier(FM) film CF @ 0.01 to 0.02

4) Hydrodynamic film CF @ 0.001 to 0.006

from the above, the best choice is hydrodynamic film. of course an engine in real world situation that is not always possible. the ratio of hydrodynamic film to other state of lubrication can range from 95/5 to 40/60 or so depending on which part of the engine. Area like piston rings to cylinder wall will take a lower ratio of hydrodynamic film. that is when your AW/EP and FM film take over to protect your engine.

most decent engine oil have enough AW/EP and FM additive to do the job very well for most riding condition. normally you do not need high-priced synthetic oil to do the job sparing more extreme usages.

so what are you looking for in an engine oil for most rider? shear stability, good film strength and good additive package. the above condition sound like what my personal choice of oils have to offer:thumb:

so do you really need expensive synthetic oil? maybe. will a good mineral oil protect as well? for most rider, i will have to say yes:thumb: of course some guys does need a peace of mind and have good money to spend so more power to you for boosting Singapore GDP:cheers:

Personally I think the Bardahl Syn Moto 10w50 is very good compared to the thinner ones that I use before like silkolene and pennzoil for 4-strokes. Don't know how to explain but engine seems to be smoother than before.. also can last longer in terms of mileage till your next service. Can give it a try. I recommend.

after engine oil change, I play with throttle for a while will have smoke coming out from the engine. 2nd time liaos.

izzit the heat burning the oil spill? or something wrong with engine?

Did your mechanic overfill your engine oil too much ??? When u on your bike, your exhaust got burn smell ?? If have, most likely head gasket kapo already.

no weird smell leh. only find it weird to have smoke coming out from the engine after oil change. I saw him pour the right amount of oil into it. Maybe I shall check the dip stick later.

was chating with my colleague who ride a Honda Wave. old timer reaching retirement next years. we are talking about bike maintenance. he think i am crazy when i told him i change my oil every 2,000km, brake fluid and coolant yearly for my spark:cheeky:

for his honda wave, he change his oil when he feel like. average about 6months. i estimate he ride about 4000km plus before changing oil. he have not change his brake fluid for good 8years:faint: troble free ride for the 8years. he plan to extend the COE for another 5years upon end of currently COE. so are most of us over doing the maintenance?

talking about brake fluid remind me of another story. 2days ago i helped a friend with his bike. his front brake had sized up. he did not want to call for towing therefore i rode the bike slowly to the nearest bike shop. despite a slow speed of average 30-40km/h for 2-3km, the disc rotor turned slightly blue upon reaching:sian:

there are 2 bike shops side by side and i make the biggest mistake by choosing the one with no customer thinking it should be a fast 20-30mins job. to spare the details, it end up taking nearly 3 hours:cry: i watch in horror as the mechanic was bleeding the brake. the brake fluid was all over the bike body and wheel. he pump the brake lever like crazy and didn't even attach a tube to properly drain the fluid to a container but just spray all over. thankfully he still hose the bike with water from time to time and wash it after the job is done. from his method, i guess there are still air in the system.

anyway, my friend 5-6 years old spark brake system is in bad condition. the master cylinder piston was corroded and clogged with dirt. the brake caliper interal was caked up with butter like substance. brake fluid is as dirty as it can get. it a good idea to change the fluid at least every two years:thumb:

Engine oil if nv change at worse just increase wear n tear in d engine. Brake fluid is more crucial. Nv change often, end up ur caliper or master cylinder will become ineffective or in worse case, seize suddenly.

Need your opinions!

If you are not riding but will still warm up the bike(GSXR 1000) (about 6-9months of no actual riding)

OCI is 5k and now its 3k.

Should i change it before storage or not?

:argue:

Inside is Penzoil fully syn.

manual strongly reccomend 10w40 but using 20w50 is okay too right?

Thought of using this http://www.schaefferoil.com/cmss_files/attachmentlibrary/TD%20Sheets/707%20Logo.pdf.

If u are not riding for that period, no nd to warm up la. just take out d battery n keep it on trickle charge. Oil change before storage. Unless ur engine start to makan EO, stick to 10w40 la. inline 4s dont rly like thick 50wt oils.

Then drip some EO into the spark plug holes, crank abit to spread d oil on d cylinder wall. Fill full tank of petrol to prevent rust. U can read up more on how angmohs overseas store their bikes for winter.

i stick with manual recommendation as close as possible. do they have a chart in the manual for you to guage whether is it possible to use 50wt in our weather? Schaeffer have a 15w40 which is a good choice too. you can get it from lubeszone.

as for the oil change, you do not have to change before storage. i have read UOA of engine oil left in a engine for more then 10years and it still usable. don't worry and save some good money.
