My bike's battery is dying and I can't start the bike. It's stuck at home and I can't get it to the mechanic (don't want to get it towed).

I decided to just remove the battery, get it charged or reconditioned at the shop and then take it home and reinstall it on the bike.

However, one of the screws attached to the battery terminal has rusted. I made matters worse by trying to force it out using a Phillips screwdriver, and stripped the screw head. I've tried using different screwdrivers but they all slip because of the damaged screw head.

Does anyone have any advice on removing a stripped, rusty screw?

Thanks.

The screws are supposed to have 2 ways to undo it. I could use either a screwdriver or a size10 spanner for mine. Not sure if its the same for yours.

Few ways.

If the screw on the battery post is also a hex-head as s4Quatro has mentioned, well, use a socket wrench to remove it......

If it's a round head, and has a little bit of the philips part left, can try impact driver if you have it.

If not, can use a dremel and dremel a groove in the head then use a regular flat screwdriver to unscrew. Or a handsaw if there is space around there to use one.

If you have vice grips, can use that to try too.

If the head material is really soft, take a big 'ol philips and hammer it on then turn.

The above methods are ghetto and may work in a pinch.

Of course, if you have drill bit and screw extractor, that works cleaner, but.....damned troublesome.

Heat? Won't heat expand the metal? Making it harder to remove?

yes and no..

heat will expand all components....the female thread is lager then the bolt thread...so in theory it will expand more than the bolt.

why you guys never think outta the box?

Short of a picture from TS which I think speak a 1000000 words for ppl seeking help for technical issue. Can't TS just cut that damn cable and re-crimp another lug for the battery terminal and take the battery out and cut off the stucked bolt head?

To cut off the bolt head, you can use a small hack saw with a thin narrow blade or if you have a Dremel tool that would be PERFECT!
