Anyone here scraped your bike after your COE ended? What happens after that? Can you still keep your bike for spare parts? Do you need to pay to scrap your bike? Suppose you don't get back any COE refund...can your bike sell for money? Can you still keep your bike at home for decorative purposes? Can you self export to a country of your destination if you have an overseas buyer?? Please contribute

Do the simple way my friend....

Just walk into any police station.

Give them your bike details....and report it STOLEN.

Save you money & effort to go thru the process of scrapping.

This way you can 'keep' you bike in your house for spare parts!!

Hi,

A while back, I bought a relatively old bike to restore for my cafe racer project. The shop told me that they just recently renewed the COE, and so I thought it was a 10 year COE, only recently, I realised it was a 5 year COE, which means the bike must be deregistered in 5 years time, is there a way to keep my bike on the road? Or must I DIE DIE, get it scrapped?

Cheers!

COEs are a statutory requirement.

It is also law that for vehicles with 5 year COEs that they must be de-registered.

SInce this is the case I suppose legally you can't keep your bike once the COE expires.

But you can try writting in to LTA or go to the courts to try and keep your vehicle on the road.

Additionally, if you feel the shop has cheated you and you have evidence of this you should lodge a police report. Pls note that even if criminal proceedings are in your favour you still might not be able to keep your bike.

If the police or AGC don't believe it is an offence of cheating you can take private recourse and sue the shop for breach of agreement.

Or you can also try to go to the Small Claims Tribunal depending on the value of your claim to get compensation for the loss you will or might suffer.

It would be best to speak to a qualified legal practitoner if you want to take any of the latter 3 courses of action.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Honestly, I doubt legal action or help with the authorities is of any use, the LTA drew the line very clearly. My guess now is to get another similar bike, part it out and when I scrape this bike, I transfer all my stuff to the other one, since when I deregister, the gahment only wants the frame and the engine case with the serial no.

Cheers!

Thats a good smart option.

At least you get to enjoy the fruits of your restoration longer.

You might wanna pursue getting some compensation from the shop by speaking to them or going through the small claims tribunal. At the least, you can try to punish bad business ethics.

Newayz, just curious, what bike is it?

Cheers!

i'm quite confused abt the COE thing here.. recently asked my fren n he said that if the bike had been renewed for 5 yrs, the bike has to be scrapped after the COE ends.. but he said that if the bike renewed COE for 10 yrs, after the 10 yrs finished can renew for another 10 yrs..

in other words, he also claimed that if i renew for another 10 yrs, the bike won't be scrapped unless i renew for another 5 yrs..

izit true? :giddy:

COE technically are valid for 10 years.

Check your bike Date of registration, the COE expiry will technically be 10 years thereafter.
