I would advise you to prioritise what u want. You can't have everything so perfectly. SP does look ugly with box as will any sportsbike. Well...it is a sportsbike after all...meant to look cool, sleek, aerodynamic and pick up hard n fast. They aren't really meant to pillion people either but they can do it just fine but your pick-up, fuel consumption, handling and suspension will suffer.

 

SP has a small underseat compartment that is big enough to put documents, small 2T bottles if need be. That is all. You can put box if u want and if u can live with yourself after doing it. Then all is well ;) Personally, I get used to not having a storage box unlike my friends. I simply carry a haversack/sling bag around if need be lor. You can also get a tankbag. Insurance is high coz it's 2-stroke which means it is really fast for its class, high risk factor and also coz u are still a P-plate. If you want your insurance to go down...build up your NCD, 2yrs of riding experience, hit 30yrs old.

 

GTS200 is a totally different type of bike. Its an auto-scooter which is relatively new compared to SP. Naturally, anything that is "auto" is usually more expensive. The maintenance (i.e EO, sparkplug, belt&rollers) is comparable to most other bikes but the parts and costs for repair/servicing is much more expensive. Most normal bikeshops cannot/dunno how to repair/service/maintain auto scooters. You will need to go those shops that specialise in scooters or the agent. Oh yes...the storage space is heavenly. And who says they aren't cool? Admittedly, they are not "racing breed" type of cool but they are definitely awesome in their own ways. They are much more high tech with their digital dash, gauges, buttons and hell....even underseat lighting! Some even have stock sockets to charge your phones or devices under the seat. How cool your bike is....its all about how u accessorize, customize, paintwork/decals and maintain (wash/wax/groom).

 

Most importantly, buy what u can afford. Money talks at the end of the day. Entertain your needs first before your wants.

Hi bro. 1stly I wan to congratulate on passing yr 2B! It is so diff to pass a bike lic nwadys. I understand yr dilemma in choosing yr 1st bike. Since I suppose u b paying for it wif yr $, u shld b wise n economical in choosing a right one for urself. I m a SP rider myself.

 

Points to take note:

1. Wats yr budget. Coe bike vs under10yr bike. SP compare wif an Italian model bike, SP def more cheaper. Maint cost too. Since SP is carb n 2-stroke, while GT is fuel-injectn. Carb bike is ez to svc. I went to svc my bike Las wk spoke to a gilera rider. He said his belting cost abt 120 every 15k mileage! If roller nd to chg, close to 300! Spare parts more x than Japan models of course. He spent quite alot on svc his bike. He was 20yo only. Since his gilera is below 10yr bike, he gt it for $3500 for remaining 2yr+. Each yr depreciate 1k+. Wow! Insur for new riders is always exp. S long s u don accident, u earn yr ncd n yr premium will get cheaper yearly. SP is slight x in terms of insur. So far, Ntuc giv the cheapest Fr wat I knw. But is Italian bike cheaper by hw much? Tis is way of owning a bike at young age. Take it, face it n live with it!

 

2. Style of riding. Scooter style or normal motorbike wif slight hunchbk style. Which u lik? Don wori, the hunchbk is abit only, slightly uncomfortable but u will lik tis posture. U try u knw. Scooter wheels is smaller than norm motorbikes. If u ride bicycle b4 which I sure u do, which is more comfortable? If go over a pothole, small wheel n big wheel do make a diff!

 

3. The pillion seating is more higher than normal bike. The pillion will feel more air blowing, more shiok n c more things. Dangerous? S long s yr bike don buang. If nt y dangerous? There is a pillion latch behind for stock SP bikes, so the pillion can hold onto it. If nt, hug u lo or both hands supp on the petrol tank. Wher gt difficult?

 

4. Purpose of buying a bike. For SP, There is only a v small compartment under the pillion seat for putting yr tools. Def no storage space. U buy bike for work n do u ND to put lots of things? If so buy a box n fix it to yr SP.

No one will laugh at u since u ND for wk n more practical. But if u don ND to put so much things, get a sling bag for yr raincoat or other stuffs. U can always hook yr helmet beside the pillion seat.

 

5. Hw long u intend to kp tis 1st bike? U plan for 2A? If decide to upgrade, save more for yr bigger bike la. Honestly bro. 1st bike tend to get inv wif accident more s u r inexp. Don buy such a gd n exp one. If u fell, yr bike damaged n sent for repair, u will feel v heart pain if yr bike is quite exp n new.

 

6. Go wif yr heart. Wat yr heart tell u, stick to it. But make sure u weight the points seriously.

 

Btw, u mention "Found a seller who is selling at 2.7k, coe till 2021 (renewable).. " I think u r mistaken. SP coe till 2021 selling at 2.7k depreciatn abt 400per year, is 100% a Coe bike (aft 10yr Liao). Year2003-4, SP no longer selling lo. Or earlier.

Thank you so so much for being so detailed! My decision will be getting a scooter because I dont think sp suits me. I learnt a lot from all of you! :) If dont mind me asking smth not related to sp, if you were to buy a second hand bike, personally will you prefer to buy from shop or directly from the seller?

To Jingel, so u r a meimei? Then SP don quite suit u la. Though some gers do ride sports bike, but posture does NT really suits a ger.

 

S for yr questn buying a bike Fr shop or direct seller, dep on following points:

 

1. If u wan take loan instalment, u hav to get Fr a shop. But u mus knw, take instalment mus pay additional interest rates lo. Nev heard any seller accept instalment. U mus take into acc the total price u b paying wif instalments. Try save up more to pay more upfront so u save more on interests.

 

2. The selling price is def much higher buying Fr shop, than Fr seller. Shop wan earn profit n commission ma. They hav to pay rent, overhead costs, recondition the bikes etc. Seller jus sell for sake of upgrading, chg bike or let go. Seller ez to negotiate.

 

3. If u get a bike Fr shop, any prob wif it, can go bk shop. But hav to find a reputable one. Some shop jus sell u, they can't b bothered by u. Same s sellers too la.

 

4. Online lists a lot of sellers. U can chk n compare prices n more models easily than shops.

 

5. Paper works is easier slightly. Shop settle everything incl insur n road tax n ownership. For sellers, 1stly u hav yo go LTA trf ownership. Then u hav to settle yr own insur. Only v slight hassle. Insur u can call n chk. LTA sin Ming is quite central too.

 

2nd hand thing dep on luck la. U heng u buy a prob-free one. U sway u buy a prob one n u hav to pump $ in to solve the prob. Some prob will come bk aft awhile. U b v frustrated w it. Mileage play an impt part too. Alwys go wif someone exp n think abt yr choices carefully. DO NOT agree or sign anything on spot. Think abt it when u r at home or cool down.

2021 shld b ( renewed). Nt (renewable). If my bike hav NT Rch 10yr, Coe is "renewable". Once Coe is renewed, u cannot renew anymore.

COE RENEWAL PERIOD

 

At the end of the 10-year COE period, vehicle owners may choose to deregister their vehicle or to revalidate their COE for another 10-year period by paying the applicable PQP or for a 5-year period by paying half the PQP (round up to the next dollar). For vehicles without statutory lifespan (such as motorcycles and cars), there is no limit to how many times you can renew the COE so long as the COE is renewed for 10 years.

True bro simpleboy. But norm ppl don kp car or bike more than 20yo unless u r a vintage collector or tat vehicle gt sentimental value. The wiring or body may hav corroded n spare parts r too diff to find n exp to buy. No point to kp a vehicle so long in spore.

Hi bro. Normally I wait for the 2T warning light to come out. Don wori. Still gt abt 150-200ml left in the container. Tis also make sure my warning light is wking fine. If u top up too early Fr a 1 litre 2T bot, u may hav some balance left. It is quite troublesome to store tat bot wif bit of left over n silly if u jus throw the balance away. How often u nd to top up also dep on hw much dist u covered.

 

I norm buy 2T (2 types : Brand is Mobil if I NT mistaken. Cfm branded). Fr Esso or Mobil petrol statn. Cost abt 9+ for norm type n 12+ for better one (racing n low smoke). So I norm buy the 12+. U can also get Fr ntuc Xtra. They sell there too.

 

I used to buy 2T Fr Carrefour years ago. Brand is TOTAL. Quite gd. No prob. But since it closed down, I jus get Fr petrol statn.

After this few days wif my sp, i feel that its kinda hard for me to start my bike engine, always gotta use choke and kick start(even after lik parked for 2hrs), sometime it will die off right after it started. Wonder is that normal, or my leg no power(techq wrong) lol. So is lik i want to ask whether u sp rider require choke start often?

BTW,I went down to planet last tue, the uncle did a quick foc check(cos brought from private seller), rode awhile and diagnosed wrong wif my bike, maybe tune the air intake on the carb, got my motul 710 from there too, wanting to get mobil 1 but they do not sell.

Hi bro. Haha. Thks for compliment. Yup. Tis SP so far has been quite reliable n most the issues wif tis bike r wear n tear, n Batt issues cos I seldom ride. So Batt life span shorten. But tats normal. Don wori too much on yr 2T warning light. Once it lit up, u will at least has another 200km ( for my case) to top up. 2T don burn lik petrol so fast.

 

Heard u hav prob wif kick start? For me, on a new day b4 I start my bike (cold start), I will pull the choke to kick start. Step hard on the handle when it is upright so gt more power to start the starter motor. Turn the throttle abit (1cm) n kick it simultaneously. By 5 kicks, u shld b able to start it. Yr rpm shld b higher than norm :bet 3-5. If yr choke gt no effect on rpm, yr choke might b spoilt- cable broke. Leave choke in same position for 20-30s. Then push bk to orig position. Make sure yr rpm drops to normal idling rpm. Sometimes it die off. Then u kick start again. Tis will nt happen more than 3x normally unless u did nt run yr bike for few days. Evry 1-2 days shld b perfectly ok. Turn the throttle more to warm up the engine more. Within 30s to 1min u shld b able to ride off. Even if I park my bike for 1 hr more, I still hav to pull choke to kick start to minimize the no. of kicks. 2-3kicks can start liao. Once started, push bk yr choke immed cos yr bike is still warm, nt lik cold start. U shld b able to move off immediately.

 

U mention yr bike die off aft started? I nt v sure wat u mean. Did it die off when u push back the choke during cold start or warm start? Or it die off when u move off for 1-2min during cold start or warm start? Mostly when die off during cold start, yr bike warm up nt enugh or u turn yr throttle too much when kick start. If die off during warm start or waiting at traff lights, most likely yr carb nd tuning or even carb cleaning. U follow my steps above c if easier to start.

 

Motul 710 engine oil? Wats the specs : _W_ _ ? Hw much for 1 litre bot? Semi syn or full? I used full syn SHELL

HELIX ULTRA 5w40. Hw often u chg?

Hey bro, yep i believe my 2t intake is pretty small, not much smoke emission. Ur explanation is very clear haha, yes its the exact same thing happen to me(maybe then 5 kicks tho lol). I not sure whether my choke cable has broke, cos dun see much jump in the idle rpm, its at 1.7~ 2k rpm, but then again maybe i didnt open choke long enuf,babysit the throttle awhile seems to be doing okay for me. ohhh so its pretty normal for old bike to keep using choke start.

The die off part is usually after i close the choke, and once or twice when moving off(cold start) maybe i ned to open throttle more when moving off will solve tt lol. Well no wonder i see the krr from my carpark warm his bike under 1 min. warm start hasnt been much prob, 1-2 kick. Thanks man, now i will noe wad the proper way to warm my bike up, and maybe lesser time.:lol:

Hi bro. To know whether yr choke is working correctly : Check yr idling rpm - > bet 1-2 rpm. Pull yr choke - > abt 3-5 rpm n yr engine run faster n louder. If u don exp the above, mus chk yr choke cable Liao. I hav replace 2-3 choke cable since ride SP. Don think it will not break or spoilt. If yr choke NT wking, u hav a hard time kick start during cold start. Mayb 10-20 times kicking it. Try to off yr headlight when kick start. However, Some bike headlight is stuck at ON. It's alwys easier to kick start w headlight off if yr Batt NT tat fully charged anymore.

 

During cold start, I warm up my bike (once started engine) by leaving my choke on n rev throttle for 3-5s. Then let the engine running for abt 20-30s. After tat, close choke n move off. Yr bike shld NT stalled. Occassionally may stall. So I will leave my choke on n continue ride for 2-3min. Then close choke. Do REM to close, don leave it on for entire journey!

Erm, yr bike v fanciful? Y would some1 do tat to scratch yr tank pad? If yr bike too "loud" buy a bike cover la. Some ppl eyes red n painful when c "loud" things. U knw wat I mean la.

 

Tank needle Nev drop, mayb broken Liao. Hav to go wkshop n chk lo. Alternatively, Take note of odometer. When pump full tank reset it, so u roughly knw if yr gas is low when hit certain mileage. When 200km, I knw I ND to top up my gas Liao or when my gauge needle touch the extreme side of the red zone. Alwys turn yr fuel knob to Reserve. U can ride longer.

 

U mus understand, y the needle stuck at 1st? A violent shake may or may NT help. But it may come bk again. Better chk at wkshop.

 

Since u get the bike jus recently, try to put in new oils, coolant for yr bike. Yr front n rear brake n engine oil. For yr brakes, u can DIY U may NT ND to drain out the old brake oil at the nipples, but try to use paper or cloth to soak the old oil n put in new brake oil for front n rear brakes. A bot of brake oil only cost 6$ roughly. Coolant chg is also DIY if u wan. Jus get a bot of coolant (6-8$) I think, then remove yr right bottom fairing. There is a black hose wif metal clip somewher below the engine. Loosen the metal clip n take out the hose gently. U will c green coolant flow out. Make sure yr reservoir also depleted. If NT remove the hose below the reservoir. When all old coolant drain, top up at the opening below the right handle bar. New coolant is gd for dissipation of heat thru yr radiator. It is directly related to yr engine. U do NT wan yr engine heat up unnecessarily. SP ez to heat up ( the temp gauge) if u wait at traff light or gear 1-2 too long. U ride longer u knw.

 

U may nd to chk n chg yr air filter abt 15$, located below the tank. I hav 2 occasions my air filter bcom brittle n the sponge break off n fell into my carb. I long time Nev chk tats y. All tis can b done DIY. If NT, send shop u pay more.

 

If all tis things chk n replaced if necessary, u will ride in peace. Even if prob come, u knw could NT b tis things s u had them chg.

Hello all! I am a newbie in bike, just passed my tp in nov..

 

I am thinking if i should get sp as my first bike.. Found a seller who is selling at 2.7k, coe till 2021 (renewable).. He mentioned alot about his maintance as well. But my concern is the storage space, riding a pillion and the higher insurance. Sp doesnt have under seat storage, and no boxes to go along with right? Please advise on this! I do know that putting box on sp is ugly.. But having a stoage space will be good leh. Is riding a pillion difficult and more dangerous as compared to other types of bike? The insurance is higher.. Is it because it is more dangerous?

 

I am thinking of getting gts200 but even a second hand machine is so expensive.. But it suits my wants.. Just that it doesnt look cool as compared to sp..

get the gilera or spark .. no point kick starting or topping up 2t ,petrol consumption on sp also no good. put box ugly ,

do you like to go out carrying helmet? no rain coat if it rains ?

So little? U alwys gt pillion or u hit above 110 everytime or ride urban regularly? NT sure if really can improve. Dep on yr luck. If the mechanic Ching chai brush here there or miss out some parts, Nev put bk, u more trouble. HW old yr bike?

Hey bro thanks, starting bike is quite okay now,the weak throttle after some blowing of smoke went away,well for the rpm,with choke pull the rpm doesnt really rise,just knocking louder. Hhaa ehh motul, yeah its kinda ex, if can prevent from getting summon guess long run its okay lol ,but will scout for cheaper sometime just not convenient bah. Went down a shop,brought a cover,and ask about the fuel gauge, said to keep track for awhile first.but like u said now base on my mileage liao, 130~current tank,needle barely move from F.
