Detailed Guide on Yoshimura Exhaust Systems

Team Spankers (or Spark 135 Owners Club) have recently posted a very detailed guide to the Yoshimura range of exhaust systems. If you're considering getting a set of Yoshimura exhaust pipes for your motorcycle, or any brand of exhaust of that matter - it would be very helpful to read the guide below.

Here are some pictures & our own personal reviews for a rough guide. This is based on our knowledge & understanding as we have tested all three pipes. Some of you might agree, some of you might not. To each, his own.

There are 3 different models of Yoshimura end cans which comes in various materials, Round Cone, Tri Oval & Tri Cone.

They are available in various materials ranging from Carbon Fiber, Metal Magic, Stainless Steel, Titanium & Titanium Blue.

How to differentiate the various materials?

Carbon Fiber- You can easily spot the carbon fiber weavings on the end can. Lightweight, looks awesome & also rare in the market but it it is not as loud as the ones made in stainless steel & titanium due to it's material.

Metal Magic- You can spot by it's matte black outlook. Very rare in the market. Google for pictures!

Stainless Steel- You can spot it by it's shiny silver 'chrome' outlook. Cheapest among all the materials, easy to take care & does not scratch easily. Can polish with Autosol or Meguiars to achieve the chrome outlook.

Titanium- You can spot it by it's matte silver outlook. Lighter than the Stainless Steel ones but looks abit dull due to it's plain matte outlook. But since the material does not heat up as hot as Stainless steel, you can head to 219 or Juzzwheels to get it wrapped up to other colours!

Titanium Blue- You can spot it by it's bluish outlook. Most expensive in the market. But the colour may fade if exposed under the sun for long hours or due to wax or chemical agents used during washing. It is also easily scratched by small stones while riding.

How to differentiate 1st Generation & 2nd Generation?

Look at the Exhaust Spring. 1st Gen have their exhaust springs hidden behind the headers while 2nd Gen have their exhaust springs at the front. Refer to picture for better understanding. There is absolutely no difference in terms of performance/sound between 1st Gen & 2nd Gen Round Cones. However, there are differences between 1st Gen & 2nd Gen Tri Ovals. 1st Gen Tri Ovals have shorter silencers which makes a difference in terms of sound & also it's performance. Refer to picture for better understanding. 1st Gen Tri Ovals are the most wanted in the market as it is no longer available.

Among all three, which is the best?

Round Cones offers you a high pitch exploding sound but it loses out in terms of performance, especially at high revs/speed as the sound will start to break & performance will turn unstable. Look for it's dynograph provided by Yoshimura Japan for reference.

Tri Ovals offers you a bassy exploding sound as well as superb performance which remains stable at high revs/speed. That is why it's priced slightly higher than Round Cones. Look for it's dynograph provided by Yoshimura Japan for reference.

Tri Cones are newer in the market. Our review about it is that it gives you somewhere in between Round Cones & Tri Ovals. Probably that was how the name came about. Tri Oval + Round Cone = Tri Cone? So if you are looking for the best in both worlds in terms of sound & performance, your choice should be the Tri Cone. It also comes with a carbon end cap which makes it more unique. Look for it's dynograph provided by Yoshimura Japan for reference.

Is there anything I can do if there are scratches on my end can?

Head down to Motoworld as they are able to replace most of your damaged parts like the whole sleeve. Contact them for exact details in terms of pricing & whether that particular part can be replaced.

As stated in the manual, Yoshimura Japan recommends silencer inner wool repacking to be done every 5,000km in order to achieve it's top performance. Climate, riding condition & frequency of ride are the contributing factors for inner wool worn out. For silencer repacking, contact Motoworld for further information.

If your headers have turned brown, you can polish it back with metal polish to achieve back it's shiny silver outlook. Do not use metal polish on Titanium Blue as it will remove the colour off.
