Rant on Non Discretionary Right Turn

So awhile ago, LTA removed a lot of discretionary right turns to reduce traffic accidents at these controlled junctions. Personally, I feel it is a good move to enhance road safety. I was driving a car for the past few years but my COE expired last year and the COE renewal cost was a little difficult to stomach. Therefore, I returned to two wheels a few months ago.

This is where the crap starts. A lot of these non discretionary right turns require a vehicle to sit on the sensor for the right turn arrow to activate and many of them have horrid sensors which can't even sense a 170kg 2A bike. I tried moving right on top of the black lines, roll around the different lines, nothing seem to work. I was forced to beat the red light after 10 minutes at the light a few times in the past months in the wee hours where no car seems to be coming to trigger the sensor. One of this right turn happen to be one of the roads turning into my residence and it is super annoying. I just avoid the junction at night nowadays.

In the past, this was not uncommon for T junctions. But riders unwilling to beat the red light had the option to dismount the bike and walk over to press the pedestrian crossing button to trigger the green. There is no such option for a non discretionary right turn. I wish that LTA can do something about this.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of non-discretionary right turns. There was once I was stuck waiting for a right turn for three cycles. I gave up and u-turned at the junction ahead which had a working right turn. That was when I was riding a 190kg R6.
