How many of you can converse fluently in dialects from your standard mother tongue language?

 

Im trying to find out how gd the govt is in eradicating 2 and 3rd generation singaporean's dialect.

 

for me, all i can do is swear in hokkien, cantonese, order food and thats about it.

 

how about u guys and gals?

get vespa!! very cute! heehee..but if you get vintage i think maintenance wise might have to spend more. mine has cost me a bomb so far, thinking of selling it but not worth it since i've pumped in so much money and effort. cant bear to sell it anyway...i love my scoot!

yah me too. im khek cos my dad's taiwanese (khek) but i cant speak nor really understand, since i see my relatives only once a year or less. but i can speak hokkien cos my mother's side is hokkien and i used to stay with my grandparents while i was young.

 

i think banning dialect on tv does have its effect on whether the young can speak it. like for me i used to stay in malaysia and watch hongkong dramas (undubbed) everyday so i can understand it quite well and speak simple conversational canto.

 

its sad that less and less young singaporeans can speak dialect cos these languages might be lost in a few generation's time. i think we should move forward with the modern society but still remember where our roots lie.

I am Teochew and lives with my maternal parents who are khek and loves to watch Hong Kong cantonese shows and haves a Hokkien girlfriend. So all in all there is no dialect I do not understand nor speak.

listening and understanding, i almost can do it up to 90%

speaking fluently, maybe only about 60% now, but if give me 1 mth to train up my hokkien speaking capability, i think, no one in NUS riders can win me

cos, i am a hokkien, my parents are hokkien, my paternal and maternal grandparants are hokkien, and i entered an hokkien military environment

i didnt really like vespa until i worked at canadian pizza for 6mths as delivery rider.

 

well my experience riding vespa for 6 mths are:

1) very nimble bike, i can squeeze through most gaps between cars

 

2) relatively dangerous bike because the front brake cmi, rear tire tend to skid when e-brake...basically this bike canot ebrake as very last min, i almost kiss cars many times, 100% canot brake in time, must swerve to avoid.

 

3) i wont recommend riding vespa on rainy days...slippery like mad.

 

4) riding vespa gives me this carefree feeling

 

well that's my experience riding sub-standard vespa rented from ban hock hin.

 

actually i feel vespa is a kind of lifestyle, must do up nicely, meet up with people of same interest to share pointers.

today at AS5 carpark, nus, at 240pm, i was riding at 20km/h when my front passed by a bmw 7 series, the driver shot out, luckily i did a big left serve otherwise i wud be superman alrdy. got down n did the knnccb salute to the prof. hope he remembers my arai. he didnt have the balls to get outta the car, in fact he sat there like a panzy n made sure i had left, b4 he left his car.(i know cos i was watchin him from 2nd storey). Ash u know how mad i was man..
