Hi. I got a question. I started my 883 today in the rather cold rain. It took quite sometime to start and it did a couple of start and die offs. Once there actually was a bright spark. Anyone knows what's it about? Is there a special way to start a sportster? Like twist the throttle abit to fill the carbs etc or can just start and go like a normal bike? Mine's a 05 model.

My regime for cold start...

1) pump throttle once

2) pull out choke half way

3) crank engine to start

Usually will fire up on the first try, if not the second.

(idling is about 900rpm w/o choke, about 1200rpm with half choke)

I am not able to cold-start at all without choke.

hmmm.... everyone tells me my bike is loud, but personally I feel that its actually quite muted (unless I blast throttle)... is this a common occurrence?

Bystander gets the full effect of the Screamin' Eagles, but rider does not?

I even thought my pipes are quiet too until I went into one of those tunnels in KL last night and it was deafening.

yup. but only as a last resort. I'm rather afraid of something I heard or read somewhere that if you throttle too much, you'd flood, mix or wet, carbs/oil/fuel/spark plug or something causing more harm.

Hey, you got your ride! Congratulations :cheer:

I open the choke 1st, start the bike and then slowly close the choke as I ride, as stated in my service manual. Due to the warm climate, the warm up time is very fast

PICs PLEASE!

HEHEHEHE

cos mine is 1200R, probably it'll look highly different.

but yah, PICS PLEASE! hehehe

Sorry for the delayed response, attached are some photos. I had chosen a backrest that is almost the smallest and can fit the tapered rack. That is to allow the helmet to rest nicely with some support from the seat or the rack.

The bag is quite secure in this manner, went up to Malacca for work a couple of weeks ago with my bag carried this way when my saddlebags were used to carry stacks of papers. The rack then was strapped with my rain coat and another small bag.

But I think a backrest looks odd on an R, or even the side saddlebags for that matter.

any attachments at the backside will look odd on the R for now, so just gotta break the convention of what means by looking nice

Thanks johan :) I'm rather afraid of the choke cos I find it revs teh engine abit too much. Maybe it's suppose to but guess I'm not used to it.

pics look great. Got better camera this time? heh

Think I saw you that day. Did you pass by Armenian Street on Friday or something? The saddle bags looks nice. But yes it looks odd. But guess it works well for touring. Can always take it off when you're not :)

I see my bike!! But too bad, it's a bit obscured :dot: It's just by the entrance. I can see the windshield, the tank, the forks and barely the front wheel

hmmm...guess I'll have to read the manual when I get it. How was R2R?

Going there by myself after wakeboarding is an adventure. Coming back, (sigh) wasn't good. I'll tell you more on MSN

Yeah man, heavy down-pour at one area where I travel less than 60km/h on the high-way, but thats just another "fun" part of riding, isn't it~ :p

Hi guys, newbie here. Just finish reading thro all 38 pages of this thread, stretching back years. Just like to say hello to all of you because you all are so fortunate to ride such nice bikes. I would like one too, alas government regulations are in my way.

I still dun even have a class 2b (although learning now) but i believe the next two years of waiting would make me treasure my ride even more (when i do finally get it)

Just to let you guys know I would be stalking you all for the next two years until i "grow up" and would be able to join you all on the roads.

Ciao!
