Hey guys, one question. My Sporty has been backfiring like crazy when its cold, sometimes engine die off also. A lot of sucking sounds (apparently) coming from the air filter. No problems once it warms up to operating temp.

Anyone encountered this before? Any ideas what could be the problem?

Hi Kiamh,

i plucked this out of a website. it seems relevant to the current wet spell we are in. hope it's as enlightening as it was for me.

Always warm your bike up for about 5 minutes. I may sound cold hearted but I’ve never warmed a bike up. I like to get on and ride. The only problem with my Harley was the backfiring that occurred. I couldn’t get the carburetor tuned well enough to make it run in cold weather. Even if you warm the bike up the air temperature of the wind rushing past the jugs cools the engine unevenly. A couple of rides at 15°F (9°C) and the head gaskets were cracked.

Mine does too a bit. By right suppose to, when it's cold or over night, pull choke, warm up for a min, ride for 2 miles, half choke, another 2 miles, then close choke, or something like that. But I also never, start and ride. If cannot start cos too cold, I pull choke, ride to 2nd gear and close choke.

Thanks DD & PBS, its reassuring to know my bike is not behaving abnormally. I'm due for another servicing in about 2 weeks, will get the my carbs tuned then to see if it helps, cheers!

About to hit 20,000km already.... :p
