Can anyone recommend a place where I can change scooter engine oil?

Almost everywhere I asked is using 10w40 but I prefer 5w40 fully synthetic scooter engine oil as stated in the scooter manual.

Thank you.

Thank you.

How about getting your favorite oil and bring it to your favorite scooter shop to change? That's too troublesome anyway.

May I know why you prefer 5W over the 10W?

Till now I am still trying figure out the different grade of oil.

Like recently, friends told me that a 5w40 oil is thinner than 10w40.

I am very confuse.

I am just trying to follow what is the recommended oil as stated in the owner's manual, it requires 5w40 fully synthetic oil. :)

Problem is I don't know where they sell 5w40 scooter oil, if not I can just purchase and bring to my bike shop.

so far, i only know maxima produces 5w 40 grade motorcycle engine oil. Model is called Ultra.

You can go planet motor or unique motor to take a look, i remembered seeing them on their shelves.

Glad to have u in my life : ) Always love one another!

in our climate, u wont be able to tell the difference between 5W and 10W. the difference can be seen when starting at temperatures below zero. at operating temps, both are at 40wt, roughly around the same viscosity (roughly as the range of 40wt is quite wide, so depends on brand), therefore technically its the same.

btw, i also feel that SCOOTER OIL is false marketing. mainly there are 2 types of oil: 4T for wet clutch, and normal car oil. most scooters have DRY centrifugal clutch, so u can opt to run normal car oil (since no wet clutch). wont go wrong with any of these, but i wouldn't really be stressing myself out to get SCOOTER oil. cheers! :)

The 5W is for winter use ... in SG, you can use 5 or 10 or 15W-40 ... there wont be any difference at all ...

Truly agree with you, simple and great explanation.

5W40 and 10W40 which is thinner?

5W and 10W and 0 degree C which is thinner?

At 100 degree C they are the same thickness.

Or are they the same?

If they are the same thickness at 100 Degree C, why 5W can flow better than 10W at 0 degree C?

If same brand, at 100C both should be ard the same thickness. At 0C, probably different. They have added VI (viscosity index) improvers to allow this behaviour. A smaller range (40 minus 10=30 versus 40 minus 5=35) is preferred as less VI is used, thus able to withstand shearing better.

Please pardon my ignorance, no engineering student here.

My theory:

If given a normal oil without any chemical added theorically oil should thicken when frozen.

For an oil to be less thick even after freezing I assume chemical have to be added no?

So my theory is between 5W and 10W in order for the oil to be thin(flow better) more chemical are added no?

You mention in order to withstand shearing Less VI are use in the 5W40(40-5=35) than the 10W40(40-10=30).

Shearing occurs in low temp or high temp? I assume it's high temp.

So if 5W have lesser VI that it should withstand better shear at high temp.

Now the question is in order for 5W to flow better more VI are used no?

In another view, could it be possible that 10W have less VI as oil natural characteristic is to thicken at low temp thus less VI used?

Could it also be 5W40 could be a thin oil added with VI to make it 40 oil so as to withstand and maintain it's thickness at 100 degree so it does not becomes thin?

All happen when my friends say 5W40 is thinner than 10W40 as 5W flow better thus 5W thinner oil, now i am really confused. :p

Lets clear something first. the two numbers (before and after the W) are not related at all. should be treated separately as they are two different properties.

Ok the first number is usually the base oil they start with. So 5W oil will thin out at high temperatures (e.g. maybe 20wt, so it can be called a 5W20). So they add VI to it to alter its behaviour and behave like 40wt instead (therefore 5W40).

For 10W40, they start off with a 10W base oil instead. At high temp, it thins out (e.g. behaves like a 30wt = 10W30). So they have to add lesser VI to make it behave at 40wt at high temps (since its already thicker to begin with, so it thins out less at high temps).

VI are susceptible to breaking down an shearing, thus try to look for a smaller range, e.g, 15W40 is more durable than and 10W40, and 10w40 is more durable than 5W40, theoretically.

At lower temps (below freezing), 5W40 will flow better of course so warmup will be better and many say startup is where wear occurs most, so this helps with that. But in our climate, i doubt it makes much difference.

how about when we go touring? since the engine will be working excessively for a long period of time I believe we should be using thicker oil like 10w50? can anybody advice?

Posted

Theoretically, the smaller the range the better. For eg., 15W-40 is better than 5W-40 as the former will "stay in grade" longer than the latter ...

Posted

Honestly, I believe that in SG, we could even get by with a single grade oil .. eg. SAE 40, with no issues at all!!

I am a newbie who is learning 2b but I have rode overseas. why dont you use car oil? 15 - 40 are usually mineral oil and 5 - 40 are usually synthetic. 5w - 40 in your manual are usually for countries with 4 seasons. I can even get by using a 15w-40 in 0 degrees so really it wont affect in singapore.

Maybe in singapore 0w-40 and 15-40 oils got very very slight difference when startup because the 15 oil could be just a very little thicker and reving doesnt feel as fast but its ok in a very short time.I do not think it warrants buying a synthetic one unless theres an offer. Oils like delvac, which can be cheaper because cars and diesel trucks I have tried too. works good and keeps engine clean.

mobil 1 gold 0w-40 I used it for quite a while. If you like syn oil 0w-40, maybe can try that. If yours is old vehicle, have to see if the oil level drops because sometimes it will slip through the rings. older bikes may benefit from non syn oils personally and with the money saved change oil a little more often coz nothing beats clean oil.

If i have a bike now I would use car / diesel truck kind of engine oil. Available in large containers and keeps engine clean.
