Rear Wheel Problem

----------------------------------

I wonder if anyone here had these problems before?

1) My rear wheel is making some squealing noises lately. I just jacked up the rear wheel to inspect and realised that the wheel when spun past a certain point will make a low frequency kinda of squealing sound accompanied by what i felt as minute resistance to rotatation. It turns freely when i gave it a hard spin though.

2) I oso reembered reading this checklist from the Haynes manual; which is jack rear wheel up, wiggle wheel left and right to check for free play....which unfortunately...THERE IS! about a 1 or 2 mm kinda free play when i wiggle the rear wheel from left to right at a 90 degree angle perpendicular to the wheel axle.

I'm suspecting my rear wheel bearing Ki chia liao.... and i hope that it is nothing worse than that!

Anyone done this and knows how much isit to replace the rear wheel bearings? i just need a ball-park figure.

And most imptly is.... Am i in grave danger to continue riding the bike in this condition??? coz it wont be few days later till i have time to get this damn problem fixed. :help: !!!

hey vic, could it just be your rear wheel not being tightened properly? that MAY cause the squealing sound you hear when you spin the wheel. why not take the pin out and try to tighten that bigass nut on the rear wheel first?

i dont think the rear wheel bearing is that easy to spoil man.. but.. i dont really know also

Hi FIL,

hey...i hope its that too, less siong for my wallet. But i dun have the tools to tighten the 'big ass' wheel nut. darn it. And i think the wheel nut requires some specific torque value too.

ANyway if its like what you said..i hope the wheel dun come off while I'm on the bike!!!! EEEKS!!!! (touch wood!)

sighh...the pains of a Pro-arm bike.

well i suppose. i HAD the same problem, the mech DIDNT EVEN TIGHTEN the nut at the rear wheel at all. i was wondering why i had funny noises when rolling, so i lifted up the wheel and it was.. ugh... shaky :/

used my hand to tighten as much as i can, and brought it to the shop the next day :sian:

i dont think the wheel will come out if your retaining pin is still on.. mine didnt.. and i rode for like.. what.. 1000km? thats why i said i dont think the rear wheel bearing will be so easily spoilt.. mine is still going strong :D

bah, troublesome, but hey... you KNOW you love the pro arm eh?

Actually K&T is wrong. If you read the Haynes, it will tell you to inspect the the rear wheel by wiggling it left and right to ascertain no free play. Then it will ask you to dismantle the wheel hub assy** to inspect the suspected worn bearings.

All bearings needs replacement at some form of thier service life. I think 6.5 years is about time.

Anyway...it was quite labour intensive. The mech dismantled the rearwheel hub assy.... sprocket, wheel hub bearing assy, spindle assy, brake assy and alll associated bolts and nuts.

An interesting info to note is that the mech told me some RVFs came to him for this job before. But they changed out the whole wheel hub assy (a big metal oval cylinder with 3 sets of bearings inside) instead of just changing the bearings inside. It cost those poor rvfians $200-$300++ to do so.

The mech did not know that the parts distributor carry the further break-down parts which is the bearings. In any maintenance logistics, there will be a IPB manual....or what is known as Illustrated Parts Breakdown. The IPB will illustrate a sub component say in this e.g, the Swingarm. Then from the Swing arm, there will be a further break down illustration of the sub components. you can go on breakin it down to the screws and bolts, they will have the part numbers for every single thing. Base on these part numbers they can check for spares availability.

So in my case, i informed the mech that i dun wana change the whole Wheel Hub Assy. I told him that the Haynes stated that the internal bearings can be changed out. He obliged and proceeded to check for spares availabilty which luckily came in an hours time. haha...he said he didnt know they got parts for bearings too. COst of the 3 sets of bearings....$85.

all the subcomponents were thoroughly cleansed before reassemblying. You guys wont believe the amount of sh*t and crud that can accumulate within the swingarm hub housing..causing abrasion each time u adjust chain. it felt good cleaning all the dirt off..otherwise i wont get a chance to anymore.

It was also a rare chance to witness how the Honda Eccentric Hub really works when you adjust the chain tensioner. Its really a mechanical marvel. And yes FiL, i now know why i love the Pro-Arm so much. Finally got to see in details the technology that so easily facilitates our scheduled servicing of the chain, sprocks and tire changes. Its still a ###### to service those bearings but after u do so, it wont bother u for a very long time.

After the rear end servicing, the noise and free play is gone. WooHoo! And strangely....Bike felt more power. Well it doesnt increase horsepower la...i mean all this while, the worn wheel bearings were actually causing a drag and after changing them out, it felt like the bike got lighter 10kg whenever i accelerate.

So there....in short...if u service yr rear wheel bearings...just change out bearings at $85 instead of paying $300 for a new wheel hub.

**ASSY is short for assembly.
