louder more shiok what...haha u kick down gear 1, the "toK' sound n ur bike will surge forward abit.

 

an old (FJ-plate) BMW stopped beside me once, n when he kicked down gear 1, "t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-tok!!!!!".. thats a sound u might wanna be worried about

tink tat sound is wan kick dun1 kick de. as in depress slowly. therefore e plates nv engaged.

i'm using motul 300v but still get the sound leh, EO does make a diff but dun tink the prob lies soley on EO alone leh.

 

although it may nml for bikes to get tat sound when shifting gears but i believe it wun be healthy for the engine n/or gear-box n it can be prevented or lighten the impact in some way.

 

regardless of make n/or cc of bikes i rode , tis prob seems to be wif me all tis while but nuv really borther until i change to cl2 bike recently. cuz i find it disturbing when the 'tok' n a nudge will follow when i shift fr 1st to 2nd gear. in a way i, tink it is more to riding habit but juz can't find where the prob lies. :confused:

 

anybody facing the same prob?

dis is my own understanding of the "problem".

 

the sound is caused when the gear dogs engaging the next gear (2nd) cogs r spinning at a significant difference in speed.

 

let's say u change gear from 1st to 2nd at 3k rpm n were slow in doing so, by the time u kick the gear lever the engine is at 1k rpm. as the gear dogs slide into the 2nd gear cogs, it gets slowed down by the nearly idling engine too much n the dogs get struck by the faster spinning cogs (although u hv fully clutched in, the engine still has some effect on the gear box).

 

the reverse can happen as well. if u rev ur engine while clutched in n change to a higher gear, u will most likely get the knock sound as well. in dis case, the dogs get spun up faster than the cogs while in transition.

 

so, for changing smoothly from 1st to 2nd, quickly n smoothly kick as u r clutching n closing the throttle.

 

dis is so that as engine revs fall, the gears engage at a point where ur engine speed is the same as where 2nd gear would b.

 

for down shifting, as u clutch in, rev u engine a little (blip the throttle) n kick down. the idea is that u change gears, say from 3rd to 2nd, at the point where the engine speed would b in the lower gear.

so does it mean tat regardless of hw high the RPM is at 1st gear, if this technique is done properly, the sound can be prevented.

yes, theoretically u can do dis at any rpm.

 

however, like most things in life, u'll find that it's not quite that straightforward.

 

generally there is always a sweet spot or two in the rpm range where the bike shifts more smoothly. at other rpms it's clunky no matter how smooth u try to b. u might read abt dis in bike magazines such as where the journalist say that shifts r smooth above 7k rpm but clunky at the lower ranges (usually a sportbike).

 

for eg, i can shift smoothly between 3k to 4k rpm. less than that i tend to get a double click feel. more than that i tend to shift poorly since i seldom rev above that.

 

simply try to change gears the moment u clutch, when the engine rpms hv dropped only slightly as u kick from 1st to 2nd (or any upshift for that matter).
