the caltex is just beside SPC? think i've been there b4, recommended by a fren. very good and honest mechanic. went to overhaul my sp there once. came back few days later and he showed me (w/o me asking) the parts that he had changed instead of discarding it.

Workshop – Wing Yap Motors, 627 Balestier Road

Technician – Lai Tin Cheong (the only guy who walks with a limp in the shop)

On Sat I got my bike towed to a workshop near my house because it wasn’t able to start. After the technician checked my bike, he told me that I need to change battery + magnetic coil + base plate. For doing the above, he needs to remove the black oil as well. The total bill would come up to $450 including $50 for workmanship. I asked if he could help me save $$ and he INSISTED that if I do not change all the parts he mentioned, I would not be able to start my bike again.

About an hour later I told him that I would prefer to scrape my 9 year old bike because I did not think it was worth paying that amount for repairs. He then proposed changing to cheaper parts and the total bill would add up to almost $400. I told him that I would give him an answer on Monday.

Monday morning he called me on the phone and I insisted on scraping. He then claims that he can help me reduce the bill to $290 for changing the battery + magnetic coil. He assured me that it was not necessary to change the base plate because he "has good skills as a technician". I told him specifically not to do any work on my bike until I reach the workshop.

I went down to the shop with the intention to bring my bike to my regular workshop. The moment I reached, the technician told me to pay $125 at the cashier. The breakdown of the charges are; $30 for towing, $55 for battery and $40 workmanship for changing the battery. I shall not post details of my argument with the technician but end of the day he reduced the workmanship to $15.

I cannot help but to feel that he was trying to use scare tactic to get me to change unnecessary parts. If his great workmanship can make up for old/ worn out parts why didnt he mentioned earlier, I am sure alot of people would be Queuing up for him to service their bike. Given my experience above, I feel that the technician cannot be trusted.
