The Edmonton, Alberta (Canada), Police Department has adorned a Ducati 749 Biposto in law-enforcement duds for a unique reason: To increase public awareness of the department's Street Legal Program, intended to get younger Canadians and their high-performance vehicles off the streets and onto the local dragstrips. The Edmonton Police Department's program also has two dragracing cars assigned to its special Blue Line Racing Division that make local appearances at various public functions to drive home its "take it to the track" safety message.

"Edmonton has seen an increase in the number of sportbike rider deaths in the past few years, peaking with a total of eight sportbike-related deaths in 2004," says Edmonton Police Constable Ryan Sparreboom, an avid motorcucle racer and the officer in charge of the specially prepared Ducati 749 (provided and customized by Argyll Motorsports of Edmonton). "We'll be using our race cars and the 2005 Ducati 749 Biposto to bring added attention to our program and hopefully save some lives in the process." Rather than cracking down with increased traffic patrols and tickets (Wow... imagine that...-Ed.), Edmonton's police department has opted to use the Ducati and dragracing cars to try and show street racers that the track is where it's at.

The white police Ducati looks awesome, with blue signal lights and non of those cheesy police add-ons. It's totally ready for track. Now, when will this kind of thinking come to Singapore?

Motor racing makes comeback with Tuas track

By SAMUEL EE

(SINGAPORE) Car racing will return to Singapore. Work on a permanent track costing at least US$15 million starts soon at Tuas, confirming an earlier BT report.

A site of more than 50 acres near Asia Pacific Breweries on Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim will house a race track and various leisure-related buildings. The 20-year lease for the JTC land is estimated at between $10 million and $15 million.

Funding for the project is said to come from Singapore Agro Agricultural (SAA), one of Turf City's main shareholders. When contacted, SAA said it has no comment for now. And JTC called the project 'confidential'.

But a source said infrastructure at the site will include buildings for cafes, restaurants and even a shopping centre to make the project commercially viable.

'It will be a destination for the whole family,' he said. 'While dad is watching the race, mum and the kids can entertain themselves or go shopping.'

A country club is also on the cards, where members will enjoy leisure facilities and other club privileges.

The track is said to be about 3km long - slightly shorter than the Pasir Gudang track in Johor. The circuit will be FIA-sanctioned but it won't be for Formula One races - partly because of the astronomical hosting fees required.

FIA is the world governing body for motor sports and organises other events such the World Touring Car and GT championships.

'We are not targeting F1 but we will still have races that will bring in spectator crowds,' said the source. 'The touring car championship will have entrants who drive cars like the Alfa Romeo 156, BMW 3 Series, and even the Chevrolet Optra - cars you and I can associate with.'

There will also be weekend races and track days - something that should excite local motor sports enthusiasts who have been lobbying the authorities for a circuit. Until now, these recreational racers have only had car park rallies, like those organised by the Singapore Motor Sports Association. But permits for these have not been issued since late 2003.

The source said construction of the Tuas track is expected to begin in a few months once regulatory approvals are given.

The land earmarked for the circuit is said to have been put on the market early last year. It is zoned for motor racing activities and SAA tendered for it late last year.

Singapore is considering motor sports as a way to boost tourism, and races here could also be marketed as part of a regional series involving other Asean countries. The last time there was any organised racing locally was in the 1970s. But the Singapore Grand Prix was dropped because of the Opec oil embargo.

Peter Tan?

That would be kinda unfair to the SAA

I don't think SMSA has got anything to do at all with this project. They even suggested a bloody TEMPORARY RACE TRACK AT MARINA when some people are trying to get this done.

even if there is one, entrance will be expensive in the name of maintainenance. then, we would have to carry all the race barang to the track to use it since its only 30 mins from anywhere.

most suitable location is tuas, might as well go pg

Everything is still a plan on paper until the foundations are being laid. We are all just speculating, so don't get so hot over things.

This is great news. Will support it if it opens up to bikes. Logistics and others costs/ time for faraway races/ track days in Sepang will be reduced. And I believe there are many who dream of our own proper bike race series.

All they need to do is replace one golf course with a race track... and they can build one long enough to be of world class standard. Am sure they can do better than the present track in mind.

But golf courses are meant for the few rich geeks.

And bikers always seem to be and will always remain the second class citizens. Thats this island for you.

Don't be surprise if the track is exclusively meant only for the few filthy rich geeks driving the exotic cars. I foresee them even requiring membership fees just like the golf clubs here. If you are not member...don't even think of gaining access to watch even.

With the way the charges are for entry into the up and coming casinos...... nothing else can surprise me. Mark my words.

I will still go to Sepang and Pasir Gudang (if it is still around by then).

Money talks on this island. Period.
