Hi spec,

good knowledge.. but dun quite understan the wind effect..(Cause be Slip Stream of BIG Vehicles will pull bikes towards larger veh.)

Can elaborate pls?

just to share my experience, but i'm no rocket scientist to elaborate the wind effect but i think u may subconciously never notice this 'sucking effect' when overtaking lorry or bus. next time when in the nsh, try overtaking them slowly, u'll feel the sucking effect. so next time when overtake, get ready, check safety, drop a gear(no matter how powerfull your bike is), speed up and overtake safely.

don't try this for fun, it's dangerous. others have already tried and tested and maybe dead from trying. just be careful when overtaking these monster. :goodluck:

On a small bike you overtake on highest gear?

Try to drop one or two gear when overtaking for better power and control.

Overtake in the shortest possible time for safety, best in less than 5 seconds.

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

because big vehicles usually have big wheels, there will be some height clearance between the vehicle and the ground/road, and when the big vehicles move, wind will rush into that space or clearance between the vehicle and ground, thus the pulling effect.. the wind rushing into the space draws anything near to the big vehicle

actually, for smaller bikes, its oways good to steer clear from big vehicles esp. if the big vehicle is travelling fast. if really need to overtake, try to do it one lane away from it if possible.. i.e big lorry ont 3rd lane, u overtake at lane 1.. if possible la..

u guys dun get it la

at highest gear, throttle already very high

so drop gear = drop speed

how to overtake?

then slow down and i don't see a need for you to overtake.

drop gear doesn't mean you try to gain more speed. in this case here, u try to gain more power by dropping a gear or two to overtake quickly.(low gears=more power, hi gears=more speed) u don't want to stay too long side by side on the vehicle u are overtaking as u can be in the blindspot as well.

btw what bike are u riding?

High Winds (Left Picture)

As The Wind is Blocked By the Big Truck...

Bike will move towards Truck.

Sort of like A Kite losing wind & droping from the sky...

So the Biker is pull towards the Vehicle.

Wind Effects (Right Picture)

The Smooth Air Flow is Disrupted by The Truck.

As u can see... the Lines are Closer.

As such... the Pressure builds Up around the Truck.

Cause Us Biker to be Not Stable.

Could be a Suck In or Push Out depending on the

Shape of the Truck.

(Venturi Effect)

Same turbulence u see when a stream flows

over a bunch of Rocks

And thru a narrow part of the stream.

The speed increases...

same amount of water has to go thru a smaller area.

Bottle neck... kayak(rowers) faces their challenge.

eg. same amount of wind going thru a smaller area.

What is Important

(If u still not to clear... we can chat over teh next time we meet... )

is that these forces affects us.

And we have to take precautions.

Hi Zod,

Can understand your situation.

True... droping gear would mean a drop of spd.

But the lower gearing will give more pwr to overtake.

It also means u may not achieve top spd for your bike.

But try full throttle top 2 gears

(eg 4th & 5th or 3rd & 4th if u do not have 5th)

U may be surprised one gear may give u a better top spd.

Most bikes does.

Back to Overtaking the BIG Vehicle:

U will have to judge if bike has enough spd/pwr to over take safely.

Otherwise, wait for opputunity eg. up hill where truck will be much slower to overtake.

One Way to Prevent INstabiliy is to Lower your Body & HUG YOUR tank.

Smaller surface.

Guess...

We are guilty of it sometimes.

Just Buying something bulky.

Do invest in a Tankbag, tailbag, topbox, panier, haversack...

We will need Full & Free controls to ride safely.

Hi Zod,

When you are in high gear, you are actually cruising along at high speed.

Cruising and overtaking are 2 different thing altogether.

You cruise along on the road at high speed and at high gear when the road is clear of traffic or very little traffic.

But when you come behind a slow moving vehicle, the chances is slim for you to be able to cruise by this vehicle to overtake it, right?

Most likely you will be force to slow down to wait for opportunity to overtake.

You cannot overtake in high gear, you will not have the power.

To have a sudden burst of power to overtake the vehicle in front in the shortest possible time, we must drop our gear once or twice depending on our travelling speed and the power of your bike.

We don't want to "hang around" besides other vehicle for too long, what we want is to overtake and get the hell out of there as fast as possible.

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

Was Caught a couple of time along the AYE towards 2nd Link...

String of Commercial Vehicles on the extreme left lane(#3)

Me... riding on the Center Lane(#2)

When... "*!"

This Lorry just pull out right infront of me

to over take.

No Signal/warning whatsoever.

Had to Serve just to avoid Him!

(remember... Try to serve within your lane)

So if u see a string of Comm. Veh...

(can understand the frustration of the comm veh

driving behind a much, much slower veh infront of the line)

Take the Extreme Right Lane (#1)

Pic is the 2 lane Stretch of AYE over Keppel Rd.

Further down the Highway.... will open up to 3 lanes.

Just remember not to hold up veh on the right lane.

i'll just carry on riding and get out the nearest exit and take shelter at petrol kiosk, bus stop. if the rain is not too heavy, i'll just carry on riding after water proofing my wallet and other stuffs. i won't melt in the rain.

While i was at my 2B stage, i only get to use my horn once.. while i was at my 2A stage, i've used it countless times.. perhaps, its due to my speed. the faster one rides, the more times u need to use the horn to tell pple "hey, im juz round the corner!" for defensive purpose.

and, i've used the horn against taxi drivers more than others..

I understand air horns are not legal, but electric horns are. Plse correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, I use a pair of electric Fiamm horns.... BEST!!! Saved me on quite a few occasions...
