Hi guys, I'm going to buy a bike from a private seller, not sure on the procedure.

I've called up Planet Motors, they say they can do the admin work for $30. Haven't include $11 for LTA.

The thing I'm confused about, how should the procedure go? Both of us working office hours so can't exactly go in the morning and come back in the afternoon, so have to do it after office hours.

Seller brings down the bike to the shop, we do the paperwork. Shop does the paperwork at LTA the next day, meanwhile, we leave the bike at the shop. Now at this point, do I hand any money over to the seller and does the seller hand over the key to the shop?

Hope someone can enlighten me.

Thank you.

PS: When I apply for insurance (on my own, NTUC), do I start it on the day the shop goes to LTA?

u can go apply for insurance now, ask the shop when they want to transfer. then U apply insurance to start on the day of transfer, if no insurance they can't transfer at all. $30 is quite cheap, but i think it is still better to do it yourselve at sin ming on Saturaday morning.

I am not free on saturday morning.

How about handing over the money? When should it be done?

u can decide it between u and the seller. When he wants the money. It is best to pay him after the bike is transfer to your name.

If seller can go to LTA on Saturday:

1. Both seller and you create an agreement on the price, handover terms (who pays transfer fee, when the cash will be handed to seller, right of seller to take legal action against you if you do not pay after transfer, you right to cancel the deal if seller gets the bike in an accident on the way to your place after transferring at LTA, both addresses), etc and sign each other's copy. In short, an agreement to protect both interests.

2. You buy insurance which will start on the day of transfer.

3. Both of you fill up the LTA transfer form, you give him your ic and $11.

4. Seller goes to LTA on Saturday to get the bike transferred to you.

5. Seller rides the bike to you (since his insurance should not be cancelled until the day of transfer).

6. You pay him the money, take the keys and your ic back, and the bike is yours.

Done. Of course, the seller must be willing to go to LTA on Saturday. And both parties need to trust each other; If your gut tells you something is fishy with the seller, or maybe he thinks the same of you, then maybe bikeshop option will be better.

SG summons no problem. show date of transfer and hdb/tp/lta wont pursue you anymore.

Its Malaysia summons which are the problem. You pump petrol at jb and kena roadblock on the way back, not knowing previous owner never paid his summons 5 yrs ago in msia, the Malaysian police wont even bother looking at your transfer doc. Either you get more summons, pay kopi money or worse, kena lock-up and do naked squats
