i apologise for keeping everyone on the line, so i'm going to make some decisions here.

 

i am ok to wait till Saturday for all of us to go in, but i need at least one other person familiar with the roads to be present. if i take the front, i need someone flanking the rear. if i do everything on Saturday, my sprocket+chain replacement and exhaust spraying may take half a day. aiming to be there at 1pm for lunch, meet up at West 12pm. lunch in JB.

 

any one else keen on Saturday who can cover the rear (or front)? Wandi? Derrick?

using my sisters laptop. went to Wisma earlier to drop off my laptop, cos i didn;t have a recovery disk to install the OS. didn't go Sim Lim as i had on old M/B and CPU which i tried reviving, only to learn that the 8 year old has a corrupted BIOS.

 

if it stops raining soon i can make the trip to Sim Lim for a new M/B and CPU, if not that will be tomorrow's itinerary.

I just wonder how many computers u have at home... all laptops is it? I just upgraded my PC at home but no more old parts I think so cannot help you there... corrupt BIOS means u cannot start up from disc anymore? Can help u there if u need? Rescue Disk or Ubuntu Disk?

living room desktop up, at least now i got something to use.

 

M/B+CPU pluged in with only 1 RAM and video card. when start up, get 'BIOS ROM checksum error'. some research teaches me that the Read Only Memory part of the BIOS chip is corrupt, replacing that chip is tedious and not worth the time.

 

old parts? old RAMs are worth their weight in platinuim (d0n and Zheng Yuan knows), so do pass around old stuff that we do not need. i strongly advocate 'Paying it Forward'.

 

we have:

1 desktop in my roon (2GHz, 1GB RAM) put together 6 years ago.

1 desktop in hall (2.4GHz, 512MB RAM) salvaged from a friend who upgraded

1 laptop, sister's boufriend's

1 laptop, sweet little Viao Picturebook I nicked from a friend who wasn't using it for me to use in school.

1 laptop, mum using, provided by school.

 

the funny thing is that our Brain is the fastest processor, has the most RAM, largest HDD, but we never seem to use it as much. wtf?

Dunno where this shop is but when I was looking around for my bike, I saw several 2nd hand ones at shops around AMK Industrial Park 1. One red one, only 3 years old and also a few Repsol versions but they did not want me to look at them cause parked between other bikes and they had not serviced yet... counted at least 3 or 4 bikes there...

a piece of 400mhz RAM costs a gold bar nowadays.

 

dun ram come in 128 , 256 , 512, 1gb in these day.. lol.. how u get the scale of 400mhz.. or u mean ur is ddr 400.. or was it ddr 2 400 forget liao..

yeah, he meant DDR400, the last one before the DDR2 specs came out and screwed me over.

 

new M/Bs don't support my 'old' DDR400 RAMs, so in the end they tell me need to buy new RAM on top of M/B and CPU, also need new Graphics card (AGP phased out) and PSU (new 24 pin specs). $500 to solve a problem that would have cost $200 if the parts were still available.

 

they make new technology cheap to force you to conform to it, but i'm not about to fall in to their trap.

Is there anyone here having rear brake being stuck, but not really stuck? Not sure how to ask. When I try to spin my rear wheel, its not smooth at all. Must spin very hard then it will spin, by abit only.

ask you ah, one period you wanted to sell your bike cos you not riding, then later didn't sell, so actually now you still the owner cos I don't recall you ride anymore.

for engine oil, its supposedly to act as a medium between the moving parts in ur engine. cos of these moving parts, theres friction and then heat generated.

so with a layer of oil, it will carry away these heat and decreasing all the wear and tear lah.. also it will prevent corrosion also, what we call rust lah..

 

and to chose what engine oil to use:

 

1st u will look at synthetic or non-synthetic.

non-synthetic is the traditional petroleum-based type and becos of the wax content in it, when weather is too cold, it solidify.. but when i say cold here, its some sort like winter kind of cold and not our morning type of cold..

so actually we dun have to factor this into consideration..

 

And, synthetic type, in layman term its "man-made"

its meant to last at least twice as long as non-synthetic ones.. so if u chose this kind, its supposedly can last longer so dun have to chg as often lah

 

then, u have to look at the vicosity.

i quote u an example from Maxima engine oil lah.. but of cos theres other types..

 

Maxima Ultra (5W50) VS Maxima Extra (15W50)

 

Ultra is a thinner engine oil compared to Extra.

I asked the mechanic before.. he told me becos mine is a new bike, so I can still use Ultra. the thinner of the both..

but when my bike is like maybe 1 or 2 yrs old.. its better to use a thicker one like extra..

i know. old technology is not in production anymore and buying them brand new is not easy. it's actually a conspiracy to force you to upgrade. Zheng Yuan and I had to find out the hard way. luckily for my 'cheepo' skills, we managed to save his PC for $39. have you tried sourcing for used RAMs on the local auctions or classified?

 

yes, looks like i'll have to get a new M/B cos that's whats broken, or so i deduce. i currently have 4 piece 256MB 400MHz RAM, Zheng Yuan's brother got 1 piece 512MB 400MHz RAM. what's your setup, and how many available slots left? maybe i will buy new (cheaper) RAMS and pass on the rest.

are u sure u are still able to get back a mobo that suits yr cpu processor?

im running on a P4 2.6C w/ 1GB RAM (made up of 2 x 512mb).

 

been getting quite abit of physical memory dump (blue screen of death) errors. suspect its either the RAM failing or the graphics card or both.

maybe its time to service yr rear brake system?

either the brake caliper seals are worn out or the brake pump is starting to show symptoms of failure.

 

not too sure if JB shops have got this parts available or not though.
