I am using this Android app to avoid the rain

Hi guys,

 

All along I have been using "SG Rain Status" to check the rain status currently to better plan my route. Not sure why it stopped working last month and other similar apps are either popping too much advertisements or too much notifications and functions such that it drains the battery.

 

 

I decided to write my own Android application which does only 1 thing..which is to tell me the rain status currently...fast. No advertisements, no pop ups..no whatever bulls*** that would irritate us. The images are downloaded from the NEA website and I have obtained permission from them.

 

 

I just want to reiterate that I am not earning any money or whatsoever from this. NEA also does not permit me to do so. This is purely just a simple, clean and fast app to check the current rain status in Singapore. My biker friends find this useful so I decided to post it here to share with more bikers. No gimmick!

- PSI hourly history for the day in a color coded table. Useful to know if the condition is improving or deteriorating.

Actually... there's an app called RAIN ALARM.

 

It pulls data from MET office from Malaysia, australi and such... so far it's been pretty great to be able to see rain animation for the past 2-4 hours so I can see where the rain is coming from.

 

Only issue is sometimes there are scattered showers which suddenly appear... :\ Good thing there are lots of bridges in Singapore hahaha

Great app.

However if you could have the "Expressway" option similar on the NEA site that would be brilliant.

It'll give everyone an easy handle to see where the rain is exactly.

actually, i use the traffic cam app, where can see the picture of the expressway. i just look for the area closes to where i want to go, and see if its raining.

@Siphon - Yup, I have tried that Rain Alarm app before. Just that I find it is too bloated with too many functionality. Good that you found a rain app that you like.

 

@lawilet - Haha same same, I also ride without rain coat:cheers: Singapore is so small and yet it can rain in Clementi but not in Bouna Vista. Always get caught in such situation. I used to check the NEA website on my phone browser, but the loading is way too slow, that is why I just "borrowed" the image from NEA with permission and package it into a app for fast loading! Most importantly..without those annoying ads.

 

@FB666Y - Did they have expressway with lane plus rain status in NEA site?? I can't seem to find it. Can let me know the link, I will see if I can pack it into my app

 

@xavw - I used to do that too haha. But now I used that more for traffic congestion.

The NEA sites has several overlays:

Expressways, Nature Park, MRT stations etc

Those would be the options below the map.

 

I find the expressways overlay the most useful -

it gives a pretty clear picture of the rain relative to my location and where I want to go.

 

Currently your app has 2 screens

The second screen doesnt animate - unless I click on the arrows ( >> ) on top right and I get a frame by frame historical data from the past 2 hours.

Quite a nice app you got there, thank you for the effort.

Are you able to include some camera view on the causeway for Woodlands and Tuas? Because I always go Malaysia and pump petrol, would be good if I can access the traffic condition easily.

 

There is already an app for all the traffic camera on road, just thinking it will be good if I can know the rain status and traffic condition in a single app.

@fastwind: I will need to get permission from LTA regarding using their traffic camera images. Let me write in to them and see how it goes. It does seems like a good idea to have both traffic conditions and rain status in a single app where we can access it.. FAST.

 

 

My objective is still to keep this app as lightweight as possible. There are already a lot of weather apps in Play Store. Just that I find it too bloated with so many useless functionality and too many Ads. Some even require location access which I really see it quite pointless. If you really have no clue of where you are, please do not download my app. I assume you already have basic knowledge of the Singapore map.

 

 

I have received numerous feedback from my mail to overlay PSI level as haze is coming to Singapore soon. Currently under development. After adding the haze reading my app will still remain very light weight as no animation involve. Will post updates on this thread once it is ready

Thanks for the app, its great and much better than the pointless forecast that I've been using.

Most of us want to know where the rain is at to be prepared, rather than use a overloaded piece of crap app with forecast that is off 70% of the time. lol

@w7_lee : I did consider zooming before but thought it was not necessary and thus was not implemented. Let me check if it is easy to put it in now as there are more overlays currently.

 

@Constructicon : You hit it right on the nail bro. All along I was also using those forecast app and I find it totally no meaning and crappy. And still dare to pop up ads to further disrupt my mood . So my app will definitely always remain Ads FREE!!

 

 

 

I still waiting for LTA reply regarding adding traffic camera images. Not to worry, I will make sure I still keep the design super lightweight and everything is fast and to the point.

@xavw - saw your post that you are using traffic camera images, hope you can try my app and give me some feedback. The difference between mine and other apps is that mine display all camera images on the selected expressway....AND..it will always be ADs free
