Hi! I'm a newbie to the motorbike world. Planning to take my bike license next month as i will be turning 18. So i got a few questions and i hope i can get some advice from the experienced!

1)My main concern is the average total course fees as i am pretty tight on cash right now.. Do take note that i am a GIRL so.. idk, don't mean to stereo-type, but i guess girls usually don't pass at first try.. but i am a pretty fast learner.

2)i'm planning to take my classes at SSDC, but i can also go for the one at CDC. I don't know if there's a difference, but which school is better to go get my 2B bike licence?

3)I am planning on getting like a second hand Honda NSR150 as my first bike, is that advisable? cause i am on a tight budget and yet i am really into the aesthetics/appearance of the bike..

4)How much does insurance cost, and what will i be insured of?

Hi there, hope I can help answer some of your questions.

1. 2B lessons are the hardest to pass because they want to make sure you can adequately handle your bike before letting you loose on the streets, so you can expect instructors to be pretty strict about things. Can't really tell how much you're gonna have to spend, but if you think you're a fast learner, then you should be able to clear each lesson with an average of 2 tries perhaps? And the final TP test 2-3 tries? And not to mention there's also the theory tests.

2. Personally, I feel that the new SSDC is a decent driving centre to go for your riding course. I have taken lessons there before, and I think the fact that most of your circuit courses are done under shelter is a huge benefit. I'm sure you'll eventually have to deal with the weather once you pass your test and start riding on the roads outside, but eliminating the discomfort and distractions of the sun and the rain could probably up your chances of passing each lesson.

3+4. Since you have mentioned earlier that you are short on cash, then I don't think the Honda SP is suitable for you. The last I heard, some 19 year old guy riding an SP had to fork out around $2,000 for a year of insurance coverage. Just to give you a rough idea, many things affect the cost of the insurance premium:

-Age of rider

-Years of riding experience

-Gender of rider

-CC size of bike

-Type of bike

-Model of bike

-Age of bike

-Type of insurance coverage (Comprehensive coverage is the most expensive, as compared to TPFT and Third Party Only)

-Etc.

Having said that, I think you can expect your insurance cost to be rather high... You can always ask for a quotation from various insurance companies though, just to get an idea of how much you'll be paying annually. All you need is the licence plate number of an SP bike, and your own personal details. Check out the companies' websites and you should have an idea how.

On top of that, the SP is a really old bike, so you'll probably have to double up on the maintenance costs as well. It is also a 2-stroke bike, and thus I'm guessing the petrol consumption shouldn't be fantastic too.

1)My main concern is the average total course fees as i am pretty tight on cash right now.. Do take note that i am a GIRL so.. idk, don't mean to stereo-type, but i guess girls usually don't pass at first try.. but i am a pretty fast learner.

For SSDC : I did a total of 26 lessons. 12 classes and 12 circuit revisions & 2 Road revisions.

Total including internet booking charge, TP booking, Defensive riding and all.. ... $810.01.

Completed in 5 months mostly weekend so more expensive also. PDL only paid once $25.

Revisions are cheaper so i took more of those to get to know the bike better. I was consider fortunate i got past most of my lessons in 1-2 tries :) So if you're a fast learner you can use this as a guage :thirsty:

2)i'm planning to take my classes at SSDC, but i can also go for the one at CDC. I don't know if there's a difference, but which school is better to go get my 2B bike licence?

Go to the one nearest to you... end of the day its you that makes the difference. The instructors can only help so much. TP are always strict. The only benefit in SSDC is when it rains... circuit is sheltered :)

3)I am planning on getting like a second hand Honda NSR150 as my first bike, is that advisable? cause i am on a tight budget and yet i am really into the aesthetics/appearance of the bike..

An old NSR with 5 years COE will be about 3-4k from fellow SBF forumers. From shops will be 4-5k ... but likely you'll need to do some pretty major servicing that will set u back about 1-2k depending on the previous owners... and this bike being a sports bike.. usually will be "whacked" ever so often so might need some TLC after that.

A newer one about 1 year plus old will also be about 8-9k from sbf and a new one will be... 11-12k?

if you're so game on looks... i know i'll get flamed by some bros... but just look at the Aprilla RSV4 4T 125... that is one BEAUTIFUL bike:) but... you'll really need to be very careful riding that bike... its usually going too fast :p i've seen many people getting into trouble with that bike while cornering too fiercely. Did i mentioned it was a Beautiful bike?

4)How much does insurance cost, and what will i be insured of?

Minimum you'll need to Insure with a 3rd Party insurance... which will set u back easily $2000 with a new sports bike... purely because of your 1. AGE, 2. P-Plate (which means no experience yet) and a 3. SPORTSBIKE. Kinda putting you in the group of HIGH RISK riders which the insurance company may need to do some payout.

With 3rd party basically, only when someone knocks into you will you be "covered". If you own self crash... well you cover yourself. If you bang someone, well the insurance covers them and you cover yourself. That's what it means.

If you get an older bike or something more "relic" looking well.. maybe $1000-1500... might be possible.

Get started with the lessons and scout around in the Used bike section here :) might see something interesting.

Hope this helps :)

I just passed my tp arnd 1 mnth ago at cdc(second time) totaled about 1.4k spent on the course. Eager to get a bike and got a cbf150(loving it)!

Can't say getting a sports bike right off the bat would be a good deal as even with only a road bike i paid 860 for insurance w ntuc(pricier choice and I am 21[22 year olds get a diff price]) sports bike will definitely set you back by more than 2000 a year! Plus certain sport bikes are 'blacklisted' by tp's, expect to get stopped more than often..

I'd advise you to get a bike with better fuel efficiency so as to get used to riding out on the streets and cheaper!

Cheers :)

SP insurance will kill you. 18 year old is about $1400 per year for that the last time I checked. Then maintenance because its usually trashed by youths who don't really maintain and some even like doing mods to it, maintenance might be a problem also. It's gonna have massive numbers of owners too, anything below 6 would be quite impressive for a 15 year old bike. Again, you don't know the history. Did Owner 1 have a crash on it? Did owner 3 decide to lower the forks? Did owner 4 weld a cracked rim?

Honestly, if you really want sportbike then just get a 2010 R15 or an older CBR150. Maintenance will be a lot cheaper, insurance will be a lot cheaper, a lot lower number of previous owners, wear and tear also will be less significant, and a lot less chance of stupid mods being done to it in the past because of the demographic of people who choose a 4 stroke over the NSRs and the KRRs.

First thing is to ask yourself what do you need a bike for? If it is mainly for commuting then forget the 2stroke sportsbikes. Functionality before aesthetics. But being a young blood I know how it is. It is always about the glamour. But at the expense of suffering just for that? My advice is to get a nice decent 4 stroke bike with good fuel consumption that is well within your budget. Insurance is a killer now besides the COE. Plan wisely on your finances and you should be good. But it is your life so do what you deem fit. We can only advise while you will be making the choice.

It took me about $1K, some lessons I tried 3 times to advance to next level, some once. I took several revisions to better myself. It helps.

I took mine at SSDC. It was a friendly environment and has shuttle bus to-fro the MRT station. Convenient for me.

No comments on this. Mine's a maxi scooter right from the start. I guess you must have a good mindset on what you like to ride on the road.

Some others have commented here on insurance. Age is a factor, and is usually expensive for young riders. There are a few type of coverages like what others have mentioned. Most importantly, what is your concern. For me, I went to the most expensive type as I know I may not be handling my bike well in the first few years. I'm also concern about fire and theft for the amount I paid for the bike. Just to buy a piece of mind I guess.

1) and 2) I have no answer for you.

3) Yes SP is a great beginner bike. It is very light IMO. Its sport ride posture and bigger frame size (compare to other 2b bikes) packed with a lil bit of power, prepares you for your 2A rides, that comes heavy as well. SP machine price is also very cheap as its relatively old. can buy a 1year non renewable one, drop all you want and then scrap it.

4) NSR150SP have one of the highest accident rate in singapore. its one of the fastest 2b bike. Youngster spoils market.

Last time(4 months ago) I check 2k+ for my 21yo friend.

3 years+ ago I paid 1.3k. I was 21years old.

As an 18-19yo, you can only insured to NTUC.

You can get a quotation here.

https://appsonline.income.com.sg/uiMotorInsurance/uiGMCQuotation.aspx

Also it is NSR150SP, not NSR150. NSR150 can mean NSR150RR or NSR150SP.. RR is extinct. Here in singapore we usually call it simply SP.
