A Sportster rumbled by my company shuttle this evening. 99% of me wanted to swap the air-conditioned comfort for the heat of the sun and VTwin...

Taking a riding styles discussion out of the Boxes and Panniers thread:

 

I tend to travel between lanes or at least to the side of the lane so that if the in front jam brake, we can Siam to the side when can't stop in time. Especially with the phantom on rainy days... Usually only travel in the centre of the lane if the road is clear ahead

 

Despite earlier mass rioting regarding my highly dangerous riding style I usually don't even think of riding between lanes during a traffic jam. I'll prefer pureice mode patiently coasting within the lane but there are times in Singapore traffic where lanesplitting is actually MUCH safer than trying to be the patient motorcyclist.

 

Local drivers aren't even alarmed provided both he/she/it and I are on predictable trajectories and are in line of sight with each other.

 

There are however people who signal at the last second, appear to see the bike and hold position, then decide to change into my lane anyway forcing the usual kind of evasive maneuvers.

 

The good thing is that a large-looking bike like the Phantom people tend to think twice about getting in your way. Some people even are courteous to a large bike. The bad is of course low speed handling can be iffy if I have an unbalanced load at the back. And I have to try not to get into the way of more agile bikes (or Phantoms without sideboxes)

 

Pictures sum it up best; but note that the little camera's depth of field gives a deceptively close up feel to objects on frame. If I'm passing close to someone it's because I'm sharing the middle lane with a Malaysian rider. And obviously the camera on my left pannier doesn't show much of keeping situational awareness at all times. Which is mandatory.

 

 

 

 

 

That's why I'm quite surprised to hear others 'usually travel between the lanes' - isn't low speed and unpredictable vehicle motion the main danger to motorcycles? Low speed splitlaning indeed is usual habit for almost everyone. I'm super cautious when negotiating jams even on a bike half the size, preferring to avoid congestion altogether. To no avail in the mornings of course, unless I go out in a stupidly early time and sleep in the park :p

 

And yep, after being squashed by the blue Toyota I went back to the usual pureice mode following the silver Toyota sedan all the way to my destination.
