i was told by ah chong today that if ur thermostat or cap spoil, just touch the radiator abit and the engine fins abit, they should have the same temperature. if radiator is alot cooler then no coolant is in the radiator aka thermostat valve spoil or very low on coolant.

Regardless of the mixture of the coolant or the type of antifreeze used, some lime, rust, and scale will always build in the cooling system.Changes in the engine temperature cause the parts to expand and contract and some of these deposits become suspended in the coolant .Coolant becomes contaminated, deposits will collect near narrow passage, making is narrower thus further the effectiveness of the cooling system.

I think we can call it sludge.

Deposits can also come from radiator hoses.Radiator hoses begins to deteriorate from the inside ,pieces of these will circulate through the system till it find a place to settle. Its mostly near the radiator core.Bulging or cracking is the signs of failure.Recommend to change those hoses every 3 or 4 yrs.

My bike 5 yrs old liao never change coolant bf, yesterday flush and changed as recommended by the mech...however aft i rode it for ten mins away the temp lights up, which i never saw it aft i bought this bike for 2 yrs! immedate return to shop, i complain so the boss came out and help. He opened the cap and topped in some more coolant, i saw lot of air come out from the reservior and looks like boiling it....i think he topped up at least another half a liter in, then tell me s4 cooling system got very small hole and always like to trap air inside and very difficult to fill coolant in and bla bla, but he said even the light on stll ok cos it's the air caused it but water still there, i am not sure on this, any one got experience on this? and aft that i rode back quite ok the light never up, but i do feel my engine got a bit hotter than before leh, can feel quit hot on my knees

It means that air is present inside the cooling system.Once the air is is gone, you dont have the problem anymore.Actually by right, after flushing and adding new coolant, the engine needs to be run to its running temperature.Just to let the air trapped inside the cooling system to expand and escape.

Engine a bit hotter than before means that the coolant is doing its job, carrying the heat from the engine parts and to the radiator, where the heat is tranferred to the air.

So if still got some air inside how ah, cos i saw him releast the air from the radiator cap, fill and wait and fill again.....like that needs to take out tank very troublesome, any indication that all air had been chased out? Thanks

Posted

Indication hmm...If the temp light stops lighting up,then i think its ok. But just check the reserve coolant tank from time to time..

if got air means the coolant system not bled properly. one way is to leave the bike overnight, then morning, open the radiator cap, if the coolant is full, its ok. if not full, top until full. the coolant tank, top abit more just so that when the coolant main system do not have enough coolant, it will draw from the coolant tank.

n if coolant heats up fast, it shd oso cool down fast.

Almost empty...wah..you can top it up or flush and get new coolant into the system. Bought my spec3 jun this year and juz 3 weeks riding the coolant in the tank also drops, looks like even in the factory they dont bleed the system properly.Maybe not much time as there's many2 bikes on the production line.

Not sure what brand but just look out for ethylene glycol-based one.

when u encounter slow traffic, the coolant circulating is not being cooled by the radiator bcos when u go slow, the cooling is minimum but when u cruise at higher speed like 90 or 100km/h, the cooling is ideal.

in simple terms, slow speed = poor cooling. fast speed = ideal cooling. n its the air flow when u ride that does the cooling. that is y some riders install a switch to manual ON the fan so that the cooling system wun overheat as they can use the radiator fan as n when they deem required.
