Spark Plugs

Hello Guys,

I heard before that there is Hot and Cold type of spark plugs. Is it true ?

If it is true,

1 ) Which one is better if it is available?

2 ) The advantage and disadvantage of these 2 types.

3 ) How do we identify which one is cold or hot spark plug?

Thanks.

1. depends which type of riding you do, for city stop go stop go riding choose a hot plug. For perfomance/long riding choose a cold plug?

2. if your bike is cooler, maybe hot plug is good. If your bike is hotter, maybe cold plug is good.

Cooler plug introduces fouling more easily, but i think it applies more for 2 stroke bikes.

From what i learn in school, a hotter engine works harder, so maybe a cooler plug may remove more heat from the engine making it work less. That in return gives you more power utilisation & lesser wear/tear.

3. hot cold is usually read from the number. for NGK plugs the higher the number the the cooler it is & lower the number vice versa!

I may not be correct on those stuff i written above but its according to what i heard & learnt. :goodluck:

Hello w00t,

thanks for sharing.

One question, any idea whether cold or hot spark plug affects the ignitate ? I got problem with the electric start. I find my bike easy to start during cold start ( when in the morning or didn't ride for some time) but harder to start when the engine is still hot.. So i was thinking whether spark plug got any effect on this....

B.regards,

i think the plug probably doesnt really affect the way it starts

unless u have a fouled plug which is more difficult to start when its cold

  • 1 month later...

anyone change your spark plug cable to be better one before? Saw a mech at a shop in yishun, installing for a wave, he cut off the original spark plug cable from the wave, and cut the end of the new racing spark plug cable, tie to 2 cutted end of the cable together and tape up using insulating tape... is this the way to install a spark plug cable??? BTW, the racing spark plug cable is yellow in colour, brand is MaxSpeed...

i personally think this way defeat the purpose of installing a better performance spark plug cable cos the core in the cable is different from the original one used in wave... Any comments?

I think it just looks good only......I agree with you.....dun seems to serve the purpose. Should be from the plug all the way to the ignition coil.

changin of spark plug cable does wrks on small bike especially Wave..cos we can feel every horsepower increased..let mi explain hw it wrks...have u guys ever ride up a slight slope at ard 70km/h? does ur speed reduces 2 ard 60km/h when reachin e peak of e slope? wat this cable does is maintain ur speed at 70km/h at e same amt of throttle... formula(V=I*R) Resistance reduces Current(I) increases at same Voltage...hope its clears any doubts:thumb:

but will the voltage or resistance go too high too much spark n cause a hole on the piston i seen this happen b4 on the piston cause by spark plug

ur voltage is fixed 1 ma..e cable is jus thicker in diameter(8.8mm if i m nt wrong) thus lesser resistance...i m usin 1 nw i find it worthwhile n effective.. :thumb:

Ok.....if small gains on small bikes is more significant, I agree.....but cutting away the old plug cable and wired it with a "performance" plug cable seems......lame. Any ways to do a more professional job of changing out the whole plug cable? If so, can consider.

Lame as in the procedure to do it......not the idea behind it. Dun misunderstood me :cheeky:

Say, if I intend to change the whole coil, I could totally remove the OEM plug cable ya??? So, question, how much does the coil cost??? And are there readily available coil with "performance" plug cables to plug and play???

I hope your "tats e way 2 do it" does not mean "tats e only way 2 do it"

Alright....I will give it a try using the "cut and paste" method :cheeky: Where could I get the cable from SG??? Blue Thunder is okay??? Most likely will do grounding as well, since take out so many things liao.....mine Wave EFI, so hope grounding would be useful too.
