As the bandwidth availability increases, demand does too. Exponentially

A study by Nemertes Research in the United States has warned that the Internet could run out of capacity as early as 2010 as more poeple watch video online.

To recoup the loss of space in so-called Cyberuniverse, at least US$130 billion (or S$189b) needs to be spent on upgrading broadband networks globally to meet rising consumer demand for bandwidth.

Significance? Put this into retrospective: The world could return to the old dial-up days -- the bane of consumers -- where speed slows to a trickle.

Your favourite video would take forever to stream from YouTube. You may have to spend an hour to confirm an online or a Credit-Card purchase. Heck, you may not be able to complete that transaction at all.

The demand for bandwidth-intensive applications does not seem to slow down as more and more people doing video blogging and posting clips on YouTube and new applications like interactive TV.

Don't forget about the people who clog up the bandwidth streaming or downloading all that video to their computers or gizmos.

Worse, should there be an Internet gridlock -- where Cyberspace suddenly grinds to a halt -- innovation would be stifled -- not because of a lack of user demand, but inadequate infrastructure.

Just wondering whether there are conservative-type internet surfers in this forums now ;)

Back in the days where 56k modems provided the much needed speed hype, my school mate demonstrated -- with a milk carton and a pencil -- how fast a webpage loads under 56k speeds, providing me a reason to upgrade from a 28.8.

A user types in the internet address.

Pencil tap milk carton = user presses enter

7 seconds later, he uses the same pencil to tap the milk carton again

= the time taken for that website to finish loading.

Living in this generation of DSL and Cable internet, I think back wondering why he didn't tell me how long would it take to download a big file over 56k

:giddy:
