"We learnt at 12:57 CET the death of Andy Caldecott, who fell at the 250km point of today's stage," says Dakar director Etienne Lavigne. "He died immediately. We knew of the accident at 12:31 CET and the helicopter was with him as 12:55 where he was pronounced dead at 12:57 CET."

The Dakar is in mourning once again following the news that Australian Andy Caldecott has been killed on Monday's 599km Stage 9 from Nouakchott to Kiffa in Mauritania. The KTM rider, who was only called up as a replacement for Jordi Duran last month, crashed fatally at the 250km point.

Today’s stage was neutralised for the motorcycle division in tribute to Andy Caldecott.

Andy Caldecott 1964 - 2006

No one had the heart to set off this morning. At the start in Kiffa, the bikers knew that there would be no timed sections. The decision was made the night before to run stage 10 on liaison. In tribute to Andy Caldecott, who died yesterday, the time was neither for the show nor competition. All the competitors who finished stage nine began the day at Kiffa with a minute of silence. This was followed with a route of more than 300 kms during which the riders didn’t stop thinking of Andy and their sport as well.

Inevitably, the unique conditions of this procession towards Kayes made the route painful. Andy Caldecott’s team mate, Carlo De Gavardo (KTM – n° 4) still seemed distraught: « it is hard for me. It is not easy for a professional rider to see that death is a possible, but it comes with the job ». Marc Coma (KTM-n°2) expressed the same sentiment in the manner he spent this unique day: ‘ we want to run the stage together, but with this dust it was too dangerous to run in groups. I preferred to set off alone in front and I thought a lot on the bike, as I’m sure all the others did. »

DAKAR 2006: 10TH STAGE: KIFFA > KAYES

10.01.2006

No Race For The Motorcycles Today

The tragedy has changed the race to a reflexive moment. Yesterday night the riders reached the bivouac of Kiffa in a silent way. No one of the competitors involved in the event wanted to hide his sad feeling. Andy Caldecott was an opponent, but first off all a friend, one of them. A clever fellow with an enormous passion. For all of them this passion is the main unstoppable engine. At the end of the day the main riders decided not to compete in the today’s stage. The special test has been cancelled and all the 333 kilometres of the stage covered as in liaison.

“One stage always difficult”, said Marc Coma. “Not because of the stress of the special stage, that was cancelled, but because all of us we have rode in a strange way, in the same time looking for the maximum of the concentration in order to avoid any risk, and thinking. I thought about thousand of things during the long liaison. I also decided how to face the next days. I will be calm, that’s sure. Tomorrow the race will re-start, but I want to run it day by day with the maximum of the calm and the self control, staying clear from any impatience. Dakar is there, 3,000 kilometres far. Without hurry.”

The race has already covered 2/3 of this mileage, and the convoy has left the desert of the Mauritania and reached the Mali. A new Country and different landscapes, with different tracks. Now the riders will encounter the savannah, with his sparse vegetation, his wild beasts crossing, many villages and populations, and thousand of tracks, almost all more or less bringing to the same direction. A demanding navigation, and a great attention to be paid in order to maintain the right way.

In the meanwhile the stage between Nouakchott and Kiffa had a long tail. Last night almost 80 riders was signalled trying to reach the finish of the special stage. This morning a strange situation: the final check point of the previous stage was also the first of the today’s cancelled stage. For most of those riders it will be a double non stop stage to Bamako, Mali.

DAKAR 2006: 11TH STAGE: KAYES > BAMAKO

Is Difficult to Attack

http://www.ktm.com/news/images/11-01-cyril.jpg

Cyril

The race restarted after the neutralization of the yesterday’s special test. To attack in this different ground of the Malian savannah is a task for specialists. Riders can ride in two close and almost parallel pists, only one being the right track. But the main problem can be the risk of the impact with an animal suddenly crossing the track. Then also to get lost for kilometres and notice it when too late is possible. In a track like the one of the today’s special test is better to defend the position, reducing at the minimum the risk of navigation mistakes. A difficult stage for Cyril Despres, that have to attack if he wants to reach his rival Marc Coma. A more comfortable position for the talented Spaniard that is leading the Dakar from the 4th stage of Zouerat.

In fact nothing changed within the 705 kilometres of the today’s, 11th stage of the Dakar. With a second position on the special test, just behind the first victory of “native” Marc Duclos, Marc Coma exploits his careful race day and increased his advantage over Cyril Depres. The gap is now over 34 minutes, three stages to go. Two Americans set a god stage, the privateer Street and KTM Red Bull team mate Chris Blais, and the only Norwegian, Pal Anders Ullevalseter that is bringing one more private KTM very near to the podium. Only the third overall, Italian Giovanni Sala, had minor problems in navigating in the dust of the rivals, and finished 13th, but without any risk for his high position.

Waiting for the next two stages, to Labhé, Guinea, and to Tambacounda, Senegal, the riders are about to face a long marathon stage. No assistance will be sent to Labhè, so all the riders will count only in their own energies. Furthermore a good reason to gently deal with tires, engines and the entire bike.

Just one year ago, January 11, 2005, in the stage between Atar and Kiffa of the 27th Dakar, we lost Fabrizio Meoni. Much more than an unforgettable Champion. I feel sad.

DAKAR 2006: 12TH STAGE: BAMAKO> LABÉ

12.01.2006

Only Geographical Changes.

http://www.dakar.com/2006/DAK/LIVE/galerie/1000/galerie_01.jpg

When the twin-engine plane lands on the red ground strip, suddenly you discover major changes: all is different in comparison with the previous day. First the colours, red for the ground and green for the vegetation, but also people: until in Mauritania and Mali, clothing was of the same tonality of the desert, yellow-beige, light brown, as mimetic. Here in Guinea people shows incredible colour variations and contrasts. People also shows more, different enthusiasm, more happiness. That’s the apparent, various reality. Coming from the sky all that changes comes all of a sudden, instead for the competitors of the today stage they comes slowly, gently. But for all of them all this shifts had also a different meaning. This one of a new variety of difficulties to be faced.

For example. Early morning Carlo De Gavardo went down in the water when crossing a river. The Chilean lost more than a half a hour in a singular misfortune could not occur in Mauritania or Mali. Same story for Ullevalseter, and one hour is gone. Giovanni Sala, third overall, lost almost forty minutes to repair a bended brake disk. The 2006 Dakar is reaching the southern part of his road, running very near to the equator, three days to go, but the strain level is still high.

The only task available for Cyril Depres was to attack. In fact, after the riders reached the border between Mali and Guinea and the special test started, the KTM Gauloises “boss” increased the pressure. French last year’s winner passed for first at both CP1 and CP2 but, due to the engaging navigation over too much dusty pists, he did not resolve to distance his main rivals for more than two minutes. After 368 kilometres of special test Despres was the winner, less than 2 minute ahead Marc Coma, less than three before Chris Blais. No big changes in the overall standings, Blais going up the fourth position and Marc Coma still defending his leadership and his confident feeling.

Jean De Azevedo was second for a long time during the special test, confirming the special attitude of the brasilian in this kind of tracks, so similar to some ones of South America, and closed the special test in a good fourth position. Red Bull KTM Team-mate Chris Blais finished third overall, but in this case the exploit is simply due to the incredible progression of the American in this final part of the race. Thinking of De Azevedo, and having a look also to the exploits of Norwegian Pal Ullevalseter and Alain Duclos, maybe it is now time to remember that the three representative riders are a part of the 62 people that registered to the KTM Customer Rally Service Package in order to accede to the best racing formula for a private competitor.

DAKAR 2006: 13TH STAGE: LABÉ > TAMBACOUNDA

13.01.2006

Dakar Enduro World Championship

“A first navigated part, as today was, then many trial sections for about 150 kilometres, and some more rivers to be crossed. The rest is more or less like the previous stage”. This was the abstract of the last night briefing hold by Etienne Lavigne, the general director of the Dakar. “The rest?” an ignored competitors threw in, “Maybe E.L. means that the rest will be “easy” as today was?

For instance, the few competitors that was there, in Guinea, ten years ago, can confirm to the others: “Guinea never can be easy”.

Brasialian De Azevedo fell badly just after the start, but continued into the special test until the pain was to high. Then he was transferred by the medical helicopter to the bivouac: nothing serious. Marc Coma ad Cyril Despres immediately passed in front leading the group until CP2, when they had to surrender to the extra power impressed in the trial section by the former six times enduro world champion Giovanni Sala. The Repsol KTM team-mate was a little disappointed for his bad luck of yesterday. So he decided to face one of the most technical special tests of this Dakar as a race in the race. And he won. “It is true: yesterday I was disappointed. But that’s it. Nothing to be emotionally related to the today’s stage. In fact, due to my starting position, I have had a bizarre opportunity: that one of catching my first victory in this Dakar avoiding any risk of lose my “salary” of “water carrier” for the Repsol KTM Team. As we say in Italy, it was the opportunity to grasp two pigeons with one bean”, meaning to collect two benefits with one only effort. Nothing to add: I feel very happy!”

Then finally, after the victorious course of Sala, the today’s stage was also an extended confirmation of the trend of the race. Cyril Despres finished ahead Marc Coma, but the Spaniard lost only a fat minute of his enormous advantage. It’s funny how a unique time can have different consistencies. Ten days ago an half a hour could be considered as something almost insignificant. Now, at two days to go, the same amount of time looks like a definitive barrier between The Leader and his challengers.

The night of the T4. Yesterday no assistance was allowed to reach Labé. This is the meaning of a Marathon Stage. Only the competitors are authorized to work on the bikes, and this is one of the basic rules of the Dakar. Following the spirit of this mix of competition an adventure, in this case only a competitor can help a colleague, and by this way a modern Factory Team have to approach this opportunity strategically. Also for that reason KTM engaged two MAN Trucks in the competition. The crews of both the MAN trucks are allowed to help the riders. They are ready to do it, of course for all the KTM Factory riders. So the yesterday’s marathon stage was mainly the marathon night of “The Six Men of the T-Fours”. They spent all the day driving, and also they spent all the night working. Finally Stefan, Franz & Co. completed the checks of all the Factory KTMs. When the last bikes was “approved”, the sun was rising, and the riders emerging from their tents. For the T-4Teams the dawn was also the perspective of a new entire day driving. In the meanwhile the two MAN are still a part of the Top Ten Overall of the Dakar.

This morning, at 10:00, at km 25 of the special test, a 10 years old boy was hit by the car of a competitor, and died during his transfer by the helicopter of the organization to Labè. Rankings

DAKAR 2006: 14TH STAGE: TAMBACOUNDA > DAKAR

14.01.2006

Atlantic Ocean

One day they called the Dakar the Transat Of Alizes, referring to that ocean sailing extreme races that were filling the pages of the newspaper and of the imagination. Now things are a little bit different, and in order to render the highest limit of a competition based on the adventure of a raid, all of them refers to the Dakar. One of the most amazing components of his very special cocktail is the power of the unforeseen. One day on the altar, the following one in the dust (and this is not only a literary reference) is what can occur to everyone.

Only two days to go, the first assistants already booking an hotel room in Dakar, maybe as close as possible to the ocean, and waiting for their riders passing throw the last kilometres of the race. Suddenly a satellite phone call: “I’m stopped at about km 200, I crashed. I’m OK, but also too much sorry!”, says Jordi Viladoms, the most admirable rookie of this Dakar. “The doctors of the organization will bring me to the hospital by helicopter”. Miracles of the technology! The injured reassuring his team!

In the meanwhile, over the last 254 kms long special test of the Dakar, the one between Tambacounda and Dakar, Frenchman David Fretigné is clinching his first victory, Marc Coma is carefully pointing to his greatest Dakar, and some other riders are… caching for the right way. Important names of competitors, as Cyril Despres and Giovanni Sala. The two champions get lost between kilometre 160 and km 172, in a complicated intersection. A simple note on the road book: Turn To Right, Then Go To… and a compass direction. The first rider coming turns to right and, at the exit of the village, takes a pist choosing it from tens, ten get lost. More than 40 minutes wasted, and also some thrills. A step behind. Marc Coma comes into the same point of the road book, check the tripmaster and, even seeing the traces of the passed riders, has some doubt. The mileage does not correspond exactly, so the Spaniard advances some meters, until he find the right track, and run away. For sure the Repsol KTM rider performs the masterpiece of the day.

American Chris Blais also make a great job. Due to his sixth place of the today’s special test, the RedBull KTM exponent is now knocking to the podium, only seven minutes outside.

Today the Dakar met the soul of Fabrizio Meoni, and passed on the terrain assigned by the government to host a new centre of arts and crafts entitled to the unforgettable Champion. There the riders also met the nearest Fabrizio’s friends. The trace of a heart was also included in the race track, as a part of the road.

Twenty years ago the Paris Dakar missed his father Thierry Sabine, dead within the terrible accident of his helicopter. Today a new mourning: at km 200 of the liaison an accident involving an assistance truck costs the life of a 12-year-old boy.

And finally tomorrow the race will end. 24 more hours, crossing our fingers.

Stage 15: Dakar > Dakar

Because of the dramatic events of the last two days, the final stage Dakar - Dakar, taking the competitors to the podium at Lac Rose, will not be timed.

The film of the stage Final Stage

First triumph for Alphand and Coma, Chagin hits back

93 bikers, 67 car crews and 33 trucks eventually made it to the finish line of the 28th Euromilhoes-Lisboa-Dakar. Luc Alphand in the car race and Marc Coma on two wheels were both crowned for the first time. Vladimir Chagin, behind the steering wheel of his Kamaz conquered his fifth title.

In memory of the two children that sadly died during the passage of the Dakar caravan in Guinea and Senegal, the Lac Rose special was not timed. The official times for the final standings of the 28th Euromilhoes-Lisboa-Dakar were therefore those registered after stage 14 between Tambacounda and Dakar.

The traditional final apotheosis this morning was naturally not as cheerful. The competitor’s joy that dream of this final lap of the Lac Rose was tarnished by the sadness linked to the losses of biker Andy Caldecott, Boubacar Diallo and Mohamed N’Daw.

The podium ceremony was therefore purely symbolic with the sporting aspect already decided before the last few days in all three categories. On two wheels, Marc Coma’s final victory could have been predicted in Lisbon at the start of the event. The Spaniard indeed looked to be the main rival of title holder Cyril Despres. He confirmed after riding a very solid and smart race that the Spanish curse that had hit Jordi Arcarons and Nani Roma in the past no longer existed.

However, the battle between the two big favourites didn’t quite happen as planned. Cyril Despres’ goal to take it nice and easily at a decent pace before trying to hit hard in the Mauritanian stages, was troubled by a big crash at km 273 of the stage going from Tan Tan to Zouerat. The Frenchman suffered a dislocated shoulder but courageously decided to carry on managing a few fine specials like the one heading to Nouakchott when he took his team mate David Casteu to a first ever success, or the one going to Kiffa when he gained a few precious minutes on Coma. Cyril Despres finished the rally with four special wins under the belt but also some very bad navigation choices like on the penultimate stage (losing over 40’).

Isidre Esteve could have been Despres successor and keep the title within the KTM-Gauloises team, but after a fall during the Nouakchott – Kiffa stage, the Spaniard was forced to quit the race and had to go through surgery for a ruptured spleen. The leading trio now only had one big gun left: Marc Coma. He was to claim his first ever success “for Andy Caldecott” his KTM-Repsol team mate…

While the 2006 Dakar title remained among the favourites, quite a few bikers proved to be the men of the future. Portugal’s Faria and Rodrigues, that didn’t only show what they could do on home soil, impressed for their first Dakars. David Casteu, that was starting his first Dakar as an official rider, perfectly managed his role as a support rider but also captured a first ever stage success and finished 8th overall. Alain Duclos, winner of the Marathon class thanks to his 7th spot overall, flew to victory in Bamako, his native town. US bikers Chris Blais, 4th this year and Jonah Street, 17th for his first appearance on the Dakar will be riders to watch in the upcoming years.

The specific standing for the privateers with no assistance was won by Frenchman Patrice Carillon (29th overall). The women’s race was won by Patricia Watson-Miller, after leader and title holder Ludivine Puy broke her pelvis heading to Tambacounda.

In the car race Luc Alphand’s final victory is nothing of a surprise. His second position in 2005 for his first Dakar in a Mitsubishi had already shown that he had a promising future on the rally. In a car that again seemed the most efficient for a Dakar, his victory ambitions were well legitimate. But for that, he first needed to beat team mate Stéphane Peterhansel. And keep a close eye on the opposition, Volkswagen, and its Race Touareg II that proved to be impressive.

The race scheme imagined by Peterhansel followed the same canvas than the one wanted by Despres. It looked to be working out perfectly with ‘Peter’ making the best of his Mitsubishi Pajero Evo IV on Mauritanian soil where the gaps started getting big. Entering Mali, the title holder had added a line in the Dakar history book by clinching a record breaking 51st stage success, enjoying a 40 minute lead over Alphand. It just looked like a triumphant walk in the park all the way to Dakar for ‘Peter’. But the rally is not won until the finish line and Peterhansel knows that just too well. On the special heading to the Frenchman committed a fatal mistake, hitting a tree that forced him to stop and repair for hours. A remake of what happened in 2003 when the 6-time Dakar bike winner lost the race on the penultimate stage before he finish in Sharm-el-Sheikh.

Luc Alphand, that constantly remained within shooting distance was offered a present that he certainly wasn’t expecting. He then had to control main rival Giniel De Villiers. To do so, the former World class skier captured two stages in a row, in Labé and Tambacounda. His final advantage on the South African: 17’53’’. Good enough!

On the first part of the rally, the focus was on the Volkswagens especially after their fine start and newcomer Carlos Sainz’s triumphant run. Winner of the two Portuguese stages, the two-time WRC World Champion also conquered his first African special on the way to Ouarzazate in Morocco. He then lost all chances of final victory when making it to the rest day. The Spaniard indeed spent quite a few hours stopped at km 26 of the special going to Nouakchott with mechanical problems. Sainz learnt the Dakar the hard way but still managed to capture four specials, a record on this Dakar.

As witnessed by Sainz, the Race Touareg armada started having more and more problems while the ‘Mitsus’ were flying to glory. In the same day, Bruno Saby lost 7 hours. Three stages later, Jutta Kleinschmidt was forced to quit after meeting… a tree! Finally, the only not to struggle with incidents and accidents was to be Giniel De Villiers who captured second spot overall.

The Schlesser-Ford team also seemed well positioned as a rival of ‘Mitsu’ and ‘VW’. The three buggies all made it to Dakar and recruiting Thierry Magnaldi was maybe the best idea of the year. A winner in Zouerat and in Nouakchott, the former biker claimed two of the three wins of the team while ‘Monsieur’ Jean Louis Schlesser clocked the fastest time on his way to Er Rachidia. But their positions in the overall standing certainly weren’t as influential as expected (Schlesser 6th, Magnaldi 10th). However this 2006 edition can satisfy the buggy boss. Maybe not as much as expected, the race also featured the BMW – XRaid team, especially in the last stages. Still learning on his second Dakar, Guerlain Chicherit captured his first ever special success.

Behind the favourites, the best amateurs were to be Dutchmen Bob Ten Harkel and Herman Vaanholt in a Land Rover (19th overall), the best newcomers were Miguel Barbosa and Miguel Ramalho (22nd). In the competition between the Production vehicles, Frenchman, Jean-Jacques Ratet on a Toyota HDJ 100 (18th overall) almost led the race from start to finish. The T2 Diesel crown was for Japan’s Yoshio Ikemachi (23rd). Thumbs up to Florence Bourgnon and Corentine Quiniou (50th), only women’s crew to make it to the Lac Rose, and Portugal’s Ricardo Leal Dos Santos (46th), who started and finished the rally on his own in a Mitsubishi Pajero.

The truck race saw yet another Kamaz triumph as team leader Vladimir Chagin made his best not to suffer the same upsets than in 2005. By building a comfortable three hour margin after claiming 6 consecutive stages, the ‘Tsar’ was well ahead and not too annoyed by his opponents. A fine inspiration as Chagin was to suffer in the sand on two occasions in Mauritania. Helped out by team mate and title holder Firdaus Kabirov, he perfectly controlled Hans Stacey. The Dutchman enjoyed victory in 5 specials and finished second overall. In Dakar, Chagin conquered his fifth title, the seventh for Kamaz.

So will the 660 still be allowed to take part in 2007 or the limit is restricted to 450?

Gee.. 450cc race :)

2006: Speed limit 150 and they dropped the competition of big cc bike.

2007: Speed limit 150? 450cc limit? Many more fuel stop?

I remember reading an article regarding the safety aspect of riding smaller cc bike in dakar race, information were gather from the experience of participants: there are higher risk for riders with smaller capacity bike because most of the time there are in full throttle.

Personally I dont think they would go to that extend by goin to 450cc. But I could be wrong.

Anyway, check this site by the American privateer PAN team, they built 525cc to look like 660. Their best rider, Jonah Street finished 17th and finished 2nd on one of the stage. Not suprising as he won the Baja500 before and Fretigne won a stage on 450. http://www.rallypanam.com

The 450 looks like it is base on the CRF450.... sweet
