Motorcycle Oil or Car Oil???

Nowadays, engine technology and oil technology have advanced requiring less frequent oil changes under normal driving conditions.

Motorcycle engine oil is required to lubricate the engine, transmission, and the clutch (with the exception of bikes with dry clutches).

Motorcycles require very little and/or no friction modifiers to help improve clutch friction and to prevent clutch slippage.

But to make up for this lack of friction modifiers, motorcycle oils use higher levels of anti-wear additives such as ZDDP, also known as phosphorous, to limit engine friction and wear.

Motorcycle oil has extra anti-wear additives and is lubricating so much more than automotive oil.

"Car-derived" motor oils are designed just for engines

The relevant oil companies then develop and test automotive oils for motorcycle use.

A properly specified motorcycle oil will still allow for the appropriate lubrication and cooling of a motorcycle clutch, whilst maintaining 100% of the drive to be transmitted by the clutch, even under arduous operating conditions.

The Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) has created their own set of performance and quality standards for petrol engines of Japanese origin.

For four-stroke gasoline engines, the JASO T904 standard is used, and is particularly relevant to motorcycle engines.

The JASO T904-MA and MA2 standards are designed to distinguish oils that are approved for wet clutch use, and the JASO T904-MB standard is not suitable for wet clutch use.

For two-stroke gasoline engines, the JASO M345 (FA, FB, FC) standard is used, and this refers particularly to low ash, lubricity, detergency, low smoke and exhaust blocking.

These standards, especially JASO-MA and JASO-FC, are designed to address oil-requirement issues not addressed by the API service categorie

One element of the JASO-MA standard is a friction test designed to determine suitability for wet clutch usage.

An oil that meets JASO-MA is considered appropriate for wet clutch operations. Oils marketed as motorcycle-specific will carry the JASO-MA label.

JASO MA and JASO MA2 standard ensure that engine oil is free of friction modifiers and is fit to be used in motorcycle engines.

If there is no mention of JASO MA specification on the bottle of engine oil then do not buy it, irrespective how many praises you might hear from its seller.

Function

Unlike cars, most motorcycles use the same oil supply for the transmission as they do the engine.

Considerations

The constant meshing of gears in a motorcycle's transmission tends to break oil down faster than normal operation in a car engine, which is why motorcycles require a specially formulated oil.

Effects

When exposed to extreme heat and pressure, the oil's molecular structure begins to break down into its component parts, thinning the oil and reducing its ability to lubricate. This is true of both auto and motorcycle oils.

Additives

Oil companies introduce a number of additives to motorcycle oils that car oils do not have, including PTFE, also known as Teflon, which coats the gears to reduce friction. This reduced friction and subsequent heat reduction helps to reduce oil breakdown.

Oil Friction

Aside from their increased friction reduction, motorcycle oils have a clear advantage when used in bikes with wet (oil submerged) clutches. The friction modifiers in motorcycle oil help to prevent clutch slippage, which automotive oils actually encourage.

Cost Considerations

Motorcycle-specific oil costs are on average 120 percent of what they are for car oils. If you buy from a motorcycle dealer, the costs can be up to 300 percent or higher.

Viscosity Retention

The manufacturers of motorcycle oils claim polymer additives they use make their products more shear-stable, but no studies to date actually support this claim, and one study by Professor John Woolum of California State University actually finds against the claim.

Wet Clutches and Additives

Car oils may contain additives such as molybdenum disulphide or buffering agents such as boron or calcium that can interfere with your motorcycle engine's smooth operation and cause clutch slippage.

Environmental Considerations

The requirement for a special motorcycle lubricant is influenced by the average temperature range in the place where you drive. If you tend to drive in either extremely hot or extremely cold weather, car oils may not provide the viscosity grade your motorcycle engine needs.

Frequency of Oil Change

Manufacturers recommend that because of the higher heat and faster breakdown of lubricant viscosity, oil should be changed more frequently in motorcycles than in cars. Lubricants designed specifically for motorcycles tend to last slightly longer before breaking down than comparable car oils.

I do know some uses automotive oil for motorcycle.

I still go for motorcycle 4T engine oil for 4 stroke motorcycles.

It all boils down to Individual preference.

woah, many things to read but i can only understand half half. Thanks anyway for the effort to put it here for us to read. :)

I feel so old sia.

excuse me for going off topic...paiseh, paiseh!

No! No! No! anybody under 60 is young ( serious really, i am not joking ) :)

my body may be getting older & fatter but i always try to keep my mind "sharp" & "young" ( hopefully :p ).

we will all die eventually but that does not mean we stop trying "to live forever & die trying".

i felt my "heart" turned "old" when i was 30. i felt my body turned "old" when i was 36.

now i realised that i felt "old" only because my mind was "rigid" & fixed to old paradigms. my body was "weak" cause i did not exercise & eat too much. i was to blame, not my "age".

after i turned 40, i suddenly felt "young" again even though i am still fat & unfit :p. my mind start to see things from new angles i never imagined before. i became at peace with myself & the world. this is what in Chinese is called "bu wo zhi nian" ( age of not confused ).

cheer up, if you believed yourself to be old, you will be. but if you believed yourself to be "young", you will find new horizons. i am still learning new things about myself even now! i am still "eager", "hungry", "resilent" & "horny" too :p

our attitudes determine our state of mind. i have seen so many people aged around 40 / 30 called themselves "old" in Singapore. Job interviewers reject applicants above 35. ageism does exist in our culture.

based on my own opinion, the only thing that is truly old is the "old-fashioned" mindset here. too much conventional thinking that holds people back & stuck in their little "box".

i no longer take things too seriously & often joked about my own "mid-life crisis" :D, when the only thing that bothers me is only my wide "mid-riff". :p

PS: btw, if you think i own a Super4 :p, you probably also think i am 19 & not from 1971. :p

The Throttle Position Sensor is a separate part the forms part of the Throttle Body assembly. However when the TPS fails, most bike manufacturers/agents will tell you that you have to change the entire Throttle Body. Its a cash cow for big biz!

@phatmonsta - The TPS is an original part which does what its name says and communicate with the ECU for the bike's fueling/spark/combustion process. Racewerks' Race Calibrator is an add on unit to adjust the fueling map of the original ECU. The race calibrator is limited unlike the Power Commanders which has much more tuning capabilities.

I also want to share somethings with u guys, actually i have tried using Car Engine Oil too... but to my 2B Kawasaki KRR bike:angel: Oil used are Shell Helix. Tried ONCE ONLY. But in my case, it is not because of the cheaper engine oil price. Purchased it at Shell Petrol Kiosk. In fact 1L is around $27 if im not wrong. Reason are, to feel the differents engine works on CAR OIL. Test if my bike can feel lighter at higher speed and can be fast as the Ferrari. CRAP!!!

You have to match the oil to the bike's requirements. There all 3 grades of Helix oil so I'm not sure if you used the correct type for your KR. For your info, I was given a free EO change by a mototiam before when I was riding my 2B bike. It was Agip fully synthetic motorcycle oil. This oil didn't suit my bike too and felt like CRAP as you say! Engine sounded and felt harsh and petrol consumption went up. After using it for about a week, I dumped the oil.

I very suay nia. I change a new M5 tyre. Bt within one week, gt a nail stuck inside liao. Wha heart pain nia.

I had a nail on my rear tyre which was about 5,000km old. Repaired it with a "plug" type repair kit. A patch is like a Handyplast plaster which you use to patch the hole from the inside of the tyre. A "worm" fills up the hole. The Plug has a "mushroom" head and a long rubber stem. The head goes all the way inside the tyre and acts like a patch when properly installed. The stem fills up the hole.

My plugged tyre ran for another 7,000km with high speed runs while touring. No problem.

Thanks, bro. Back home safe as always  It was a great trip with purpose.

I'm co-organising another big ride on 15 Sept to KL and Ipoh for another good cause. Will post details soon. Meanwhile, I think Revorians will need to get out of SG for rides so we can condition ourselves for riding in convoy and long haul riding. It takes quite a bit of experience for such rides.

Be wary of the source of information for your bike's maintenance. Some FAQs are compiled by people who lack the technical know how.

Motorcycle & its components are replaceable & rebuildable.

The human body don't work this way.

The human body takes time to heal & recover, it might even break and cannot be fixed.

Please set your priority right.

No such thing as could afford to buy a bike but couldn't afford appropriate riding gears.

We are not famous racers or even paid to ride, protect yourself with riding gears to minimize the pain & injuries from the crash.
