Got my bike back. Verified with Boon Siew, yes we must have had done our servicing with them or at any authorized workshops. By doing so we will attain their Honda chops which in turn allows us to exhaust our warranty. If you have not done so, like myself for example, our warranty is useless. Friday, 4pm, gave Ah Chong the green light to order the coil, called in Saturday, 3pm, bike ready. Spent $375 in total, $350 for original honda magnetic coil from Japan, $25 for tow service. Rectifier was fine, pheww! Anyways this is the pic of my burnt out magnetic coil, after further inspection, i found a made in China engraving, niceeee! No wonder all of us are having magnetic coil issues, didnt believe Ah Chong when he told me till I saw it myself. Should we write in to them guys?

Mine just failed me last friday. But I'm not that lucky as I'm on the way back to home in Malaysia at Pasir Gudang HW. Decided towing back to Singapore as I don't have name of bike shop can do this repair in JB.

My bike mileage is now 40,000km+, bike is almost 4yrs. The burnt out of the magnetic coil is exactly the at the same place as shown in the picture & same pattern. I didn't notice where it's made for my burnt coil. It's really xxxx if it's made in China.

Just for you information, I've my magnetic coil replaced at HKL. They quote me as follow with all parts are made in Japan.

1. Magnetic coil + gasket + labour = S$360

2. Rectifier + labour = S$180

=> Total damage = S$540 for the repair.

Price of revo's rectifier is really 2x more than the one used in spec 1-3. The mechanic also complaint the mounting design of the rectifier is not so good. I agree because the bolt & nut design cause him lots of time to change the rectifier. It's really hard to insert & hold the nut behind as it's very close to the engine.

They also recommended me to change the battery, but I didn't as I can push start if the battery failed me at any time. Just request them to charge for me first. I'll change it if only the battery really failed. Save money lah, pocket one big hole liao for the magnetic coil & rectifier.

Just feel that CB400 should be a super reliable bike for daily use. My bike is only close to 4yrs but the electronic parts starts to fail me. Now I'll reconsider the Honda image since even such a expensive bike, Honda still implementing some important parts not in high quality in order to cut cost. What I pay for is that really worth the price?

Headlight is from Fazer 1000 NAKED, original, bought and fixed it at Republic. You can purchase it from Planet Motors as well. Look for ah chong.

Frankly, I've never have good impression of HONDA vehicles, although I'm riding a REVO myself and that's because in Singapore, there's no other 400cc road bikes with water cooled engines other than those scooters, which I don't fancy due to their small wheels.

During the 80's, my neighbor used to have a pretty new HONDA CIVIC and I always saw him experiencing starting problems almost every morning. It will take him almost 5 long cranks or more to get the bloody engine started.

I myself used to drive my boss' HONDA ACCORD 2.0 in the 90's. I felt it lacked power for a reasonable pick-up, especially for a 2-litre engine. The MAZDA 1.6-litre which I also drove before was much faster in its pick-up.

I also had the HONDA CM125 motorcycle. Believing that a Made-In-Japan product should have respectable quality and performance, but it did not. I also had starting problems almost every morning. It had to be cranked at least 5 times even with the choke fully pulled before its engine could fire every morning. To make it worse, there's no kick-start also. Also, the pick-up is anemic even though it's a 2-cylinder engine. Since, it being a 4-stroke 125cc engine, I don't expect too much in performance, BUT, my colleague's SUZUKI GN125 was even faster than the HONDA CM125, no joke.

Before my REVO, I rode a brandnew HONDA S4 (Spec 3). Being a carburetor model, it too had problems starting if not used for 1 week. It would need to be cranked several times with its choke fully pulled to be started if the bike was not used for more than 3 days. Finally, I did a DIY modification myself by adding a capacitor to each of its 2 HT coils before I managed to get respectable starting again. Unfortunately, due to a road accident, I then traded in for the REVO, and that's because there's no other 400cc road bikes with water cooled engines available. The KAWASAKI model was still not available in Singapore yet.

If only YAMAHA has a 400cc water cooled road bike in Singapore, I would certainly go for it as I used to ride a Class 2B YAMAHA bike and it had very good reliability, vis-a-vis performance. Unfortunately, I had to scrap it due to aging, normal wear & tear and the expiring of its COE.

Word of advise from an ex pulsar rider....

Pulsar bike require a lot of TLC (tender loving care) Any shortchange of TLC will result in u contributing to some company's year end profits and bonus..

Do handle with care.

HINT

Look at the number of post on garage sale and check out the parts that have been changed by these owners. Garage sale pulsar's engine component are mostly so brand new... As if u r buying a one year old bike....

Haha. My pulsar i got take care one sia. It's just that some parts i also duno why spoil. Like the speed sensor cable. The one that detects how fast u going. I also duno how come suddenly can spoil! :( but so far nth major has happened. Engine is still strong. Nth major has needed my attention yet. Maybe some of their parts really cut cost. But it's a cheap bike afterall. Can't blame

Actually, before I bought my first S4 (Spec 3) from Looi's Motor, I was strongly contemplating the GSR400. The setback which puts me off was that it is only available as parallel import as Guan Hoe doesn't import nor carry the spare parts for the GSR400. At that time, they only imported the GSR600, which I don't have the license.

And after the road accident when I traded in my S4 for the REVO, the GSR400 already boh liao. A S Phoon told me that because of the high Yen (hence not easy to sell), nobody imports this model anymore.

By the way, if I have Class 2 license, I'll eye the YAMAHA R6. But too bad, no license and don't intend to upgrade also.

Wah swey man kena up north. Anyways I changed my batt on the day it failed me which was on Wed at first, Yuasa $140. My rectifier is still in good condition from the looks of it so I didn't change it. So far after two days of riding, voltage is very stable, actually after changing the magnetic coil, i do not encounter anymore double sweeping of the speedometer needle anymore. I am just very upset at the terms and conditions of our warranty by boon siew and also the fact that we got short changed with a made in China magnetic coil. I guess even the big boys wanna save on costs now. No wonder they do not include our magnetic coil in the parts available for warranty claim cause they know it's smth that is going to bite them in the ass if they do. I remember there was one batch of Suzuki 1000cc, **** me not, I reckon it was the k6 series that was also affected by the magnetic coil issues. I recalled seeing a shitload of those bikes at bike shops during that time

ermm, if your bike is PI, warranty's not covered by Boon Siew unless it's agent bike imported by them.

bro is double sweeping of the speedometer needle means the magnetic coil is abit defective?

Battery not enough charge due to magnetic coil is one of the reason.

Another reason is battery weak.

well i got mine 1st hand at bp 2yrs plus ago.. agent bike under boon siew but dont bother to service under dem coz got labor fee n stuff.. did a recall with dem regarding back brake light switch for free.. no problem till now 35k ++ km.. agressive rider... but seldom go up north... reading u guys coil problem make me even more scared go up north... but end of the day i

think all this fault heng suay one ar.. would like to ask regarding the post on starting the bike upright can help care for the coil.. does it really helps?

I got my bike from BP too... NOT PI, from Boon Siew. Magnetic Coil Made in JAPAN, and Changed to Made in JAPAN too. Even after the change of coil, there will still be DOUBLE SWEEPING "IF" you seldom ride. Battery charger BUY at MotoWorld, spend a little bit more $ to get QUALITY ones. Can Charge bike & car BATTERY. Whether u guys ride NORTH, SOUTH, WEST, or EAST. Magnetic Coil STILL can get BURNT, it is unavoidable. BECAUSE this COIL will get WEAR & TEAR. Hope this helps....:thumb:

It means your bike is not charging properly, from what I gathered its definitely coil related.

Hi thatguyhaikal,

I've tried to PM you but your msg fulled. :(

May I gather some information from you regarding your magnetic coil burnt?

1. What's the engine oil brand you're using when your magnetic coil burnt? Are your using original honda oil filter?

2. Did you get your engine oil changed after the magnetic coil changed?

I didn't change my engine oil after the magnetic coil burnt as the engine oil still smooth to me. I'm thinking whether I should have the engine oil changed immediately or not.
