Hi all,

Just get my spec3 around 1 month, 6.5 years bike, ~ 115k km mileage.

I have some doubt on issue below, may u share if u have idea on it. Thanks a lot.

1. Clunky gear shifting

I heard that shift from N to gear 1 have a rough clunky sound is a normal, But if hard acceleration and shifting to gear2 also feel very rough clunky. If carefully and slowly shift to gear 2, mostly it is smooth and comparable silent a lot. Shift to gear 3 is always rough clunky. Shift to gear 4 is same condition as shift to gear 2. But shift to gear 5 and 6 are quite silent and smooth every time. Down shifting to every gear is also smooth and silent. Is it normal? I checked with shop and colleague who ride high cc bike as well, they said is normal.

2. Vibration when rev to high rpm and didn't shift up the gear but release the throttle, sometimes vibration sometimes no, is it normal?

3. Encounter after start and warm up and engine, engine stall and bike move forward while shift up from N to gear 1. The clutch is pulled and havent released yet. Any advise?

Prolly :

- your clutch biting point need adjustment (maybe didn't disengage fully)

- your clutch plate/ clutch spring/ clutch cable gone

- gear shifting prob is subjective, need expert opinion to test & conclude the real prob (hopefully small prob instead of major)

- wrong engine oil grade

All Hondas I've owned have clunky gear shift especially from neutral to 1st as you described. First try adjusting the clutch on the handlebar adjuster. If no success maybe the engine oil is not the correct grade i.e. too heavy like 20W50SAE, the spec 4 bike uses 10W30SAE. Try a fully synthetic oil of the correct grade for your bike stated in the owners handbook.

Hi thanks for advice. I did adjust clutch on handlebar to more tighten but not so effective.

The engine oil is using Motul brand, recommended by shop but I forget to check whether is 10w40 or 10w50.

Thanks for advise. I will try again to adjust clutch biting point to more tighten to see the result.

I did check with previous owner, he mentioned he just changed the clutch plate less than 1 year, may not be this issue.

Hi

My clutch lever level getting lower and lower.

I try adjust the cable level it ok for a week but now get low again.

Check the cable adjust position Is still there. It almost finish turn already so I not dare to turn anymore.

Any idea what problem? Clutch cable spoilt?

Highly suspect 1 or more of the steel strands on your clutch cable had broken. This will indirectly "lengthened" the steel cable inside the sleeve and very soon, the clutch cable will break. Had experienced this before on my previous bike.

This was what I had experienced myself. Furthermore, it doesn't makes sense that the clearance of the clutch plates will deteriorate so much within just a week of adjustment under normal riding circumstances. Therefore, it's likely the pre-failure symptoms of a "soon-to-break" clutch cable.

By the way, you can also observe the condition of the clutch cable. The steel strands will usually start to break from the "end" points, especially on the clutch handle lever's side. Anyway, without the clutch cable, the bike can still be ridden, but you must know the method and it's for emergency and short distance travel (for you to get to the nearest motorshop) only. Otherwise, it will damage the gearbox eventually.

adjust at the lever for small adjustment

After adjust the clutch at engine side, it feel better but still have clunky sound while gear shifting. Hopefully it will not cause any damage on engine and gear box.

if there is sound it means somewhere in the line there is very high tension already. like what other forumers had said, your clutch cable could be having some problem soon.

Honda are known for bullet proof gear boxes, it could be your riding style. Maybe practice a few gear changes up & down without the use of the clutch (NOT from neutral to 1st but when bike is moving, like from 1st to 2nd, to 3rd etc.). This will help you find good throttle control. Generally it wil not easily change gear (without the clutch) at the wrong throttle setting, it should however change gear without grinding or excessive clunk when you get this right.

Mates, my front brakes "vibrate" when i'm close to stopping. Does anyone know what's that about? Pads are still good.

might be due to uneven brake disc or air bubbles in the brake system

Hi all, thanks for advice.

if there is sound it means somewhere in the line there is very high tension already. like what other forumers had said, your clutch cable could be having some problem soon.

I checked with bikeshop mech that they said it is normal. I just compare to my previous 2b bike that it is quite small sound while every gear shifting. And they said can't compare to small cc bike. The sound from 1st gear to 4th gear is same clunky as from N to 1st.

Check is ur chain is too loose.

check the chain, it is ok. Even try to tighten it still same.

Honda are known for bullet proof gear boxes, it could be your riding style. Maybe practice a few gear changes up & down without the use of the clutch (NOT from neutral to 1st but when bike is moving, like from 1st to 2nd, to 3rd etc.). Practice as your advise. It is work. Sometimes quite smooth while gear up shifting. But can't change gear without clutch. Still need engage clutch but need to play with timing of clutch and throttle. Not easy to get everytime no sound while gear shifting. Thanks
