Malaysia to ban fuel sales to S'pore cars from June 9

The ban, to stop foreigners from benefitting from fuel subsidy, on Thai cars from the north starts June 2

By Carolyn Hong, Malaysia Bureau Chief

IN KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA will only start banning Singapore-registered cars from buying fuel in Johor stations near the southern border from June 9, instead of Friday as earlier announced.

The ban at the northern border, largely affecting Thai-registered cars, will start a week earlier - on June 2.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Samad told The Straits Times that the ban would not affect motorcycles. They will be allowed to buy subsidised fuel anywhere in Malaysia.'These are usually low-income earners, and many of them could be Malaysians,' he said.

Malaysia had earlier announced a ban on the sale of fuel to foreign-registered vehicles from stations within 50km of its northern and southern borders.

This was to prevent Malaysia's heavily-subsidised fuel from being sold to foreigners, especially the stream of Thai vehicles which cross the border daily just to buy diesel or petrol.

The delay in implementing the ban was caused by administrative issues such as publicity and the printing of posters to be placed at affected petrol stations.

'It's the information campaign that is holding things up,' Datuk Shahrir said.

At current global oil prices, Malaysia will spend RM55 billion (S$23 billion) this year - more than its RM40 billion annual development budget - to keep pump prices among the lowest in the region.

Read the full story in Saturday's edition of The Straits Times.

Yeah,I am very much not trusting them, they might drop a bombshell at short notice.

At least,in singapore, there is ample time to adapt when they implement a certain policy.Like the ban of chewing gum.Which was in 1990,it was announced pretty early.I can still remember when i was a kid.

But for malaysia, like the abolishment of whitecard(which is good) and this petrol problem(not so good),the very week itself they implement. It just makes me feel that they are trying to get back due to the loss of the small island lighthouse.Let it be,let them play the game.

For us,we would just watch and wait.glad to be Singaporeans. At least our government gives us room to think.

well u know...it have been that way for ages. Over here they think FOR the people & its impact first...over there, do first talk later...well, let them be. I dont like politics & never will. I have heard numerous market talk about this & that on reasons why they are doing this on us...I have nothing against them all...We are who we are & they are whom they are....:dot:

Bro,if you consider this bike, make sure you love it.

These bikes were abandoned because they gave way and the love

from their previous owners had somehow died down.

Parts are difficult to find to be honest. But it is one hell of a bike when it sprints.

Just to paint you a better picture. My powervalve servo is dead.

And in these conditions,I can still achieve a 0-100km/h in about 6 seconds.

With the powervalve on?

Higher torque would push the bike to a better time.

Top end is till 170km/h on gear 6 at 9000rpm.

There is still ample rpm till the carburetor sputters but

smaller front sprocket is required.I am using the OEM

sprocket configuration.
