You can't.

Not without the cooperation of the ISP of the IP address involved.

Unless if its a static IP. Even then, it will show to registered owner of the IP address which may be just a front record.

If can track down, then all of us will be in trouble already. Confirm govt will use against you for anything thing from illegal downloading to pirated activities. hahaha

Theoretically they can.

How do you think a lot of those who download kiddie porn gets tracked down?

Fortunately, authorities place more importance on tracking down such offenders rather than downloading pirated stuffs.

So maybe I should rephase my previous sentence.

Those tracked down very simply becoz the ISP have logging records. This in turn will be used to track the owner of the ISP account, thus leading to the culprit.

But to trace the IP Address to a certain location by normal means is impossible. You will need the ISP's help which in turn is not possible. Provided you have a court order to reveal the person behind that IP Address.

Didn't I just say that to the threadstarter?

As a normal user, yes, tracking physical / geographical location by IP is next to impossible especially when it comes to getting the ISP involved to spill the beans.

Static IPs are a bit tad easier as any good DNS lookup website can do it for you.

Heck, some of them display the registered owner name and address of the static IP address.

BUT, all the info could just be a front. Any Tom, **** & Harry can own an IP address and domain name these days with less than $50 and a fake ID.

Hell, you can even own a fixed domain name for free at DynDNS with a ISP-provided dynamic IP address.

But, for governments, its a bit different.

Theoretically, if they bother to, they can go after each and everyone of you who participate in illegal downloads / sharing. Its a matter of subpoenaing (apologies for any bad spellings) the records from the ISP, which they can much more easily compared to a normal user.

BUT, they don't normally bother as there is no economic return for it.

BUT, crimes against humanity in general like downloading kiddie porn or engaging in paedophilic activities is a different matter that most authorities do take particular interest in pursuing.

If you take note, those who go after illegal downloaders / file-sharers are not the authorities, but rather big industry players that has a vested interest in its elimination. Major movie studios for movie downloaders, major record studios for music downloaders, software watchdogs (like BSA in Singapore) for software piracy. That's why the battle is still ongoing.

If its really a government policy to pursue every abovementioned activity, the war would have been over before it started and we would be where we were in the 80's, paying for every an entire album just to listen to one song that we like.

A company that I'd like to cite is Odex.

Force one of our ISPs to disclose to them the names of illegal Anime downloaders, but failed as they do not have exclusive rights to the Anime clips being downloaded, and hence have no say on this.

Somehow or rather, the Japanese anime companies themselves got the SG Courts to order that particular ISP to do so.

And thus, Odex was happy that (quote) "they could offer assistance to the Japanese Anime companies and will continue to do so as some sort of a middleman advisor" (unquote)

I can sense that their sting is just as painful as a scorpion's :nono:

Yes, furthers my point in 2 ways:

1. Its not as easy to do it as a user or even a company, unless you have direct IP ownership over the product in question and that you have the near endless-resource to pursue it. In this case, alliance of several Japanese anime studios / companies and not a small podunk local distributor now stealing credit.

2. Its usually companies that have vested interest to do such things. Governments don't really bother. Otherwise, like I said, it would have been over a long time ago...
