Hi all,

Was looking to get a backpack specific for riding. Was talking to a friend and he mentioned that some people think backpacks are dangerous on a bike and others think it helps in skids etc. Any opinions on this from our more experienced forummers?

Cheers

i think the safer way to protect yourself is the attire, if you are looking at safety.

I would suggest NOT wearing a backpack while riding, especially if the backpack becomes thick after stuffing with your things.

Should you fall off the bike and land on your back, the impact plus the weight of the helmet could snap your neck backwards, giving you whiplash or worse. Better to just simply tie down your bag on the passenger seat.

Ok so point is, not to make it overloaded, and maybe get one with a back protector. So that its not too heavy as to cause problems during a sommersault scenario, but still provides enough protection against a sliding scenario.

Or better yet, wear a jacket with back protection and just put the backpack away. The problem with a backpack is that it only needs to be partially-full to be unsafe. I'm pretty sure you are not going to just load it to 20% capacity to be on the safe side.

It is not the weight of the bag that makes it unsafe. It's the fact that you will be landing on the contents of the bag instead of on the flat road. This means there is alot of pressure on your back at the point where it is in contact with the contents of your bag, and your neck is lifted off the road and left to whip backwards due to the weight of the helmet ( a full face helmet weighs 1.5-1.6kg, which is a lot of weight during a fall).

You might be better off with a tail-bag or a tank bag if you don't want saddle bags or tie downs.
