has anyone modded it with a switch and external power source?

eg. battery > wires > switch > removable IU.

currently, my IU is stored under the seat, when i wish to use it, i just velcro it to a metal support on my bars that i fabricated at seng kwang. the pek chek thing is that everytime i want to use it, must remove the seat, take out the IU, velcro to the support and tidy up the long wire running along the underside of my fuel tank before i put the seat back in place.

In your case, you should then pre-run the power cable with a clip-on connector to the IU metal support. The IU with a short cable with a clip-on connector. So whenever you need to use it, remove IU from storage, and mate the connectors and ready to go. :)

Bike has no battery doesn't means it has no power supply otherwise how would your lights and horn work ?

By portable, it means that the IU is powered by external battery and not taking power from the bike. You can cut the IU wire and connect it to a 9V connector. So just connect the IU to a 9V battery and have the IU somewhere (on the handle bar, in your backpack) when passing ERP gantry.

By removable, it means to use bike to power the IU but the power cable is a snap-on type, so IU is mounted on the bike, and power cable mated with the bike's power cable by the snap-on connector whenever require to pass ERP gantry.

No one has an official answer to this question. But from personal experience, an IU left without power for 2 years is a dead IU.

A word of caution. The IU is intended to be permanently mounted on the designated vehicle. Any deviation from the intended use or installation may constitute an illegal modification. So do so at your own risk.

thanks for ur reply. anyway, i actually intended to make use when only required as i have already made male/female connectors to it which is also water proof. but the other day i made some rearrangments of my meter cluster n found space for the IU to b permanently there, so no need for clips or brackets. i know that there is power supply even though theres no batt. just tt not sure which wire to tap from? previously on my other bikes with batt its easy. as for my scram without batt, do i tap from headlite or tailight? or is there a better choice? n for the blackwire i just ground it? help is much appreciated.

There are many sizes of such connectors, I bought the bigger type at $2.50, so it's easier to hook and unhook, especially with gloves on. Will shoot a pic of the connector when I get home.

and how to attach them to the battery/ IU

IU connection is very easy as it has only two wires. The wire with the fuse, connect directly to the positive (+) lead of the battery whereas the other wire just connect to any metal body of the frame.

Hi dudes,

cutting the wires doesn't void an warranty. as told by the tech staff from viacom IU dept. i went there to repair my cable because some ass tried to rip my IU. telltale signs of someone ripping the cable.

when i was at the IU dept of viacom, i told the tech guy if he could help me make it IU detachable. he was cool enough to help me fix up a waterproof connector. he even taught me which cables to specifically remove when i want to remove the IU. my reasoning doing so is that i would go off road once in a while, fearing the rough terrain might tear off any unneccessary attachments on the bike.

he didnt charge me a single dime because the IU is under warranty. as for clipping the IU to the bike, i'm using the bracket that is attached to the side mirror. when i plan to remove IU, simply unscrew the side mirror bolt.

but guys, just saying this so that you guys dun have to stress so much lah... just leave the IU there if you're riding a roadbike. i only find detaching the IU necceasry if you wanna go offroad. but still, there are times i just leave it there. just imagine that the IU is a GPS system. :D

As claimed, There's a need to drive when we have a Family. But all that is needed to ride is Dream... Many are still dreaming about it.

I also found out that, after two dead IUs, if the IU has been disconnected from the power supply for a prolonged period it will die. The IU is powered by two internal batteries, if these two batteries are totally drained, you will not be able recharged them subsequently.

I'm selling the 2 internal batteries.

Connectors can be used to your preference as long as the connectors can take the current. Just bring the IU (with its cables that is..) to Sim Lim Towers and ask one of the aunties, they will be glad to shown you many designs of connectors. Most common ones are R/C car connectors which are pretty universal.

For IUs, current drawn is very low, so your connectors can be very small. If you intend to use the same connectors as a batt charging connector, please use a bigger connector as the ampere drawn is definitely higher.

The above used is the small connector. My IU blocks the critical speedo on SG roads (mounted yoke left), and blocks rpm for good NS travelling (mounted yoke right), hence these resorted me to various implementations when IU is required. As motorcycle is does not enter gantries or ERP carparks often , so my IU is :-

1. Strapped on the top of the pillion seat. (works great with gantrys, but certainly NOT many car parks)

2. Into my rear pouch (same as above)

3. Strapped onto shoulder/wrist (works everywhere.. but you might not look glam :cheeky: )

4. Strapped right side of waist like businessman handphones (works everywhere, still you don't look as glam:giddy:)

A bigger connector is recommended as you can use it a batt charger connector in future. I intend to change my when free :cheeky:

I always wonder why can't they make smaller ?

Demon is right on track with connections...Connecting to headlight or other "key powered" devices may not be advisable because the IU will not work without the bike powered (key-on). This also means your internal battery may still KO within a few years. And refrain from NOT using the FUSE.. Sometink "POKs" good luck..

Thank You.
